Well done, tym! I eyeballed that sale but ultimately decided not to go. Glad someone on here did and got something a bargain or three.
Thanks! Went there on a whim and there was a lot of stuff left even though it was the last day.

Replaced the electrocution special wiring on the grinder and removed the damaged side guards (tool rests and eye shields were missing anyway). Grinder runs smoothly and I think will be perfect for a wire wheel and buffing wheel.

The Steelmaster drawers cleaned up nicely.

The Poll for the 2019 Garage Sale Thread Host was deadlocked at 18 votes each between BB and bb at 6:09PM, when I said it would be "closed", five full days after I opened it. I am going to extend it until 10PM. If you haven't yet voted, PLEASE click here to VOTE NOW! I really don't want to have to flip a coin between these guys!

All voting is anonymous

BB: congrats on the win that looked like a tie at the poles. Maybe the polls results were counted in Florida??

All: yep disregard my comment of the duo host for 2019 unless BB -would like to ask BB to duo host.

WOW! Folks, I'm honored.

I wasn't a picker before I found this thread in 2014. However, it inspired me (some might say enabled me :) to go seek out sales in my area. I found one in the next town over, scored a South Bend 9" lathe for $150, and was hooked. Most everything I know about vintage tools and brands, I learned from all of the posters, past and present, on this thread and it's many spin-offs. I even started a thread on double box end wrenches that I'd gathered from sales, and it became a top ten thread in the Vintage Tools section.

Sure, I tried to retire from picking back in 2015, but that famously lasted just five days. I've slowed down a lot, but I still enjoyed the thrill of poking around in dank basements and rickety old barns, looking for old tools that the living owners don't know or don't care about. And I check this thread nearly every day to see what everyone else has found and to read the stories of the picks.

Frankly, almost any one of the top fifteen posters are on here enough to warrant the nod for thread launch. Heck, bluebolt's been a top poster for the last six years running! I'll have the honor of First Post, but it's all of us that make this thread so much fun.

Speaking of making this thread fun, how about some more praise for this year's host!?!?
The buzz Private Lugnutz generated, moderated, narrated and orchestrated has made this the most prolific year BY FAR...and he's not even done yet! I'm not going to have the time (or the energy!) to match Lugz' example, but I will follow it in one key area: the Picker Of The Year Award. I already have an idea for a really cool trophy for the 2019 selectee......

On to the culmination of this year's thread! I can't wait to read Lugz' Year In Review on New Year's Eve!

Congrats Bluebomber! That was a close one, 22 votes for you and 21 for me!

It was indeed! Your contributions to this thread are legendary--frankly I was surprised by the early votes given my post total compared to everyone in front of me. I look forward to everyone's help next year in keeping the party going!

Sorry for the confusion guys, which stems from me not setting a limit on the poll when I started it. (Although the duo-host Blue Brothers post was a really good play on words - or in this case a play on initials!)

Just so everyone knows what went down, as I explained in Post #8522 above, at 6:09 PM EST, 23 December, 5 days after I opened it, the vote was tied 18-18 between BB and bb. In that same post I said I would extend the voting until 10 PM, which I could do, because I forgot to set an automatic closing time for it.

At 10:02 PM, the voting was 22 to 21 in favor of BlueBomber. At that time, I closed the poll, came over here and wrote Post #8525 announcing BB the winner, and posted that screenshot.

I don't look at close voting as a Divided Thread, but a good sign that we had more than one great choice, and will again next year, as I am sure that bluebolt will keep his campaign bus tuned up and full of gas - with plenty of 5-gallon jerry cans strapped to the back for long stretches, just in case! :)

Congratulations BlueBomber! Those are some big shoes to fill but based on your past participation and your gracious acceptance, it looks like we are set for another great year.

And congratulations to all those with the last minute hauls.

We have a couple of days yet...

Picked up a Cman 506-51801 vise and a cute little Columbian Penypencher vise.
Also bought 2 very clean Morse drill indexes.
That's an unknown T driver (havnt clean it up yet) , 2 Buck Brothers chisels, a Starrett divider and a Japanese saw.

Brian

Merry Christmas to y'all !

Lug: looks like the voting is still going on and the other BB(T) took the lead. :shocking:

again it's been fun this year with you holding the reins (tight at times and for good reason) and i'm sure you and all of us will help BBR (yep two BB's so need another initial i guess) with 2019's Garage Sale thread.

BBR: yep it looks like you are in for a fun ride and i'm sure if there are things to find this group will find more than their share and we should learn more about some of this cool old and good stuff. GOOD LUCK!!

Duddly: nice pic!!

ALL: I picked this up a while back and from the outside the box looked ok, but after I opened it up it looked like a time capsule of almost NEW OLD STOCK SK.

Not a tool per se but I grabbed this off Letgo for my niece today. It has metal rails and looks like it was originally made this size, not cut down. It needs some love.

Merry Christmas!

My last post of the year in this thread.
I was online with ebay looking for a rod tip for one of my estate sale fishing rods.
I found not only the tip, but a whole set of manufacturer's fishing reel tools, Pakistan stainless hemostats, reel lube, USA mini-screwdriver, two unused spools of rod-wrapping thread, USA line clippers, and this gem, all for $6 (plus $7 for shipping):

RMVIDkH0nJkeVRtCjlRE0MzLasaxTjkj9sqS7VMvaLnT1is8DVw3zFvgMc0g7OnvULUKoTtMk7MAV2UQ3cOYNoMeCx8ogBYMnJ0z6MbFOx5qhL4Z2yq_Yf8rRff65d52zZ_0QcUeGiDvIbp-f4lmaLf5BhTTxb_gO0w6e2Xrp7VtjXc9ID10WnRwshIi1lNlOfQHrKbVy1vlsSX99OEQJ0-HpOpv1kCoStl4wl7_B6ypAnYzMgWeDIxkJda5VKD-DDFoojyUXrZkMLu04m7tZVdVVTyHGmEHmxlQeEnHsgaWJzTQwI8tWFYHxBJRayYnwF7EK6XH19p33tX9JaqE8AzWUFL37PtVY6hPnnLVUE5jUpb4ZrLdyTaOZ0Ada9qnKwTR59SpWke_LJ4CpE7VVTmm4xpVWnGYcYUwgRIFG_0K1hrecdHMombbOXSvyO5gKmQsv4Qbiz3f9XMvVZQIDqR8TpNCtd9HUiSVsmkff1elTDLZoqzMQHRWZjbe8Nqx397GFfwAh0EMfJ1SiG2HKG7oF8vsMkjx60O6MArrNUMfrSUDcwDNcFYTYhklTyEn_18g1q9bY18wBz1YVS_mIsnMm4-YHOFynRH6xjceuNDuN2sC-rcMuYWaw7gyha_X_-xI74bWub0mGmIeIPA-23kCuA=w679-h905-no

Proto USA keychain screwdriver. I wanted one for a while. On ebay, these seem to be going for anywhere from $10 to $15. I just saw it on the corner of the listing photo and I knew what it was.

Here's the ebay photo:

Congrats Blue Bomber, here's to the 2019 thread. Probably won't have any further scores this year, (probably) but want to thank everybody for the education, warmth and humor this thread has given me this year. Personal thanks to Lugz for all the work you put in making this year what it was. I had a blast this year with my hunting and gathering and look forward to next year, though I may have to start following some of the rescue/organization threads elsewhere on these pages. Happy Holidays to all, wishes of suckage in the coming year.

Last minute letgo grab before the festivities.
Mitutoyo 505-637-50 dial caliper 6" made in Japan
The older all-metal style. With original red plastic box, and older logo.

Used but minimally. The whole thing has a tacky grease on it so she needs a cleaning. $20

Triple rescue! Christmas with the inlaws I persuaded BIL to let me salvage a few items from a garage with roof problems. I spotted the 4" Wilton bullet and persuaded him to let me refurbish it for him. It's rusted solid at the momennt, but I don't thinnk it's beyond saving. The Penncraft cart I wanted because I like Penncraft and have a place for it. It will tae some serious de-rusting, but is usable as is with a little clean and lube. It took some persuasion to convince him a mere craftsman globe cart is worth saving. What did it is that it belonged to an uncle and dates to the early 40's if not earlier. All will now be sheltered, dry and happy!

Amazingly, both carts still have their front covers!

Is there a date behind the heritage label? it's probably late 40's early 50's. Early 40's would have been Long C.

Nice saves regardless!

Outlaw, I was going by a dim understanding of Crafty ages and family history. I inspected both the drawer and the cover and found no trace of a date, printed or stamped (I assume you mean the back side of the panel the logo is riveted to? I did not drill the rivets and remove the logo tags!:shocking:)
The later date is also compatible with family history. I defer to your superior knowledge.

Found this NOS hammer handle for $2 at an antique store today. It's made by Bruner Ivory in Hope Arkansas about 90 miles north from me. I have been to the factory a few years ago, bought some wooden carts and desks from there. The factory closed in 2004.

The Craftsman cabinet is 1946-48, according to Craftsman catalog depictions. Prior to 1946, the Craftsman "heritage" logo was not in use and in 1949, the rolling cabinets changed from 2 drawer handles to a single handle in the center of each drawer.

Nice find!

RagtopTA: that's an impressive haul.

Pls explain this practice of hiding stuff so you can buy it at a discount the next day. You didn't say whether there was a company running the sale that asked outrageous prices for things you'd spent hours sifting out of a debris pile.

“Strange”? It’s just a spark plug socket.
Is it an LT28? It looks pretty typical of their 3/8dr sockets from the 1940s. Their first CV sockets (1/2dr) had “Chrome (CV) Vanadium” stamped in italics under the roman “BONNEY”. “Made in USA” was off to the right of that. My guess is, removing the “Chrome (CV) Vanadium” and placing “Made (CV) in USA” in its stead indicates wartime alloy restrictions production.

The flatware is probably WWII. Skimming this article, seems like manufacturers sometimes had difficulty adapting to revised specs. The hole in the handle was specified in 1926, but not put into production until 1941. If yours is really brass-nickel, perhaps it was one of the few modified after 1934. The article has what I think may be an error, stating WWI material was tin-plated steel. Tin-plated steel was instituted in 1941. Silver-plated steel in 1943. Stainless was instituted in Aug1944.
Check the spoon with a magnet. Stainless or nickel should have only the slightest pull, while steel should be strong. I don’t know what to think about the verdigris corrosion, could be transferred from something it was in contact with, rather than the base metal.

Thanks for the cool link. Very interesting reading. I have a few of the items in the article including some mess kits and silverware.

ALL: as i'm pulling out my stuff from the corners and boxes and buckets from years of doing MY STYLE OF SHOPPING I thought i'd show off a flat file drawer that has some of my PLVMB GOODNESS in it that was all obtained either from my dad and gramps (not much, but a few) and the hundreds of sales where I dug through a mess to find a few. more pics on the show your plvmb thread for those interested in a little closer look.

one reason I love flat files is that 1 inch Plvmb ratchet in the middle of the drawer is 24 inches long.

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL OF YOU WHO LOVE TO SHOP AT THE TYPE OF SALES I LOVE TO SHOP AT!

RagtopTA: that's an impressive haul.

Pls explain this practice of hiding stuff so you can buy it at a discount the next day. You didn't say whether there was a company running the sale that asked outrageous prices for things you'd spent hours sifting out of a debris pile.

If I find something I think Id like to have and is way overpriced, but I spent two hours digging through that place, I will stick it right back down underneath all the debris and other assorted stuff till the next day. If someone else digs and puts the effort in like me they can buy it at reg price if they choose. I go back the next day on half-price day and if its still there Ill decide then if I really want it.

The socket is an LT28!! It just looked strange to me, I haven't found any Bonney like that before. Ther spoon has almost zero pull (I can't feel anything) on a really strong magnet. I lay the spoon on the bench and put the super strong magnet half an inch above it and nothing. It doesn't stick to it at all. Cleaning it a bit with simple green, I dont know what to make of the greenish corrosion being on it. it was in a box of PVC and other assorted stuff. Here's a few pics of it after some gentle cleaning. I dont know a thing about these just figured it was military when I saw the US. A picker there told me oh yea its old Navy spoon but from WW1. I dont think he knows much about them either. Are there any other markings I should look for on it ?
