Great Score and Great story to go with it.Lets see some more pics soon!

Posted more pics over on the Garage Sale thread. Did initial sorting this morning. Lots of Vlchek. Mac was pretty well represented as well. Makes sense seeing how I was in Ohio. 3 meager Plomb wrenches. Only 6 pieces of foreign-made **** successfully infiltrated the trip. I initially thought the Toolmobile was missing one of the caster sockets but I found it and just need to spot weld it back on.

Urgh. If another GJ member wouldn't have said they're on it, I would be on it. Awesome box!

I sweetened the deal as there is shipping involved, and he was shying away. Deal sealed, PP the $$ and he says it will ship tomorrow!

between bidding it up and shipping its not exactly a "you ****" deal anymore but these are hard to find around here...

I'll need to work parts of it with Evaporusrt to try to preserve the paint...

Damn nice box. War era decal I believe? Also looks like something was stenciled on the top in addition to the embossed logo. Very cool! Glad you got it Outlaw.

Took a three-day "tool trip" this week and may or may not have gone a little tool box crazy. No parts shelf for the Toolmobile but I'm thrilled to have it. On the gray and red stack, both the top chest and roller are date stamped '68. The Cornwell (I have the drawer that's not in the picture, just needs the slide tweaked) was purchased from the same seller as the Plomb. Both have both original keys and belonged to the sellers Grandfather. Between tools that were in the boxes and the generosity of a couple of GJ members I met along the way, I'm going to be sorting tools for the next couple of days. Also picked up a three-drawer Heritage chest but forgot to take a picture of it. Fun trip!
Sweet. I'd love to score that same vintage Cman stack you have.

Here's a pic of my Mac Tools stack. Bought it off craigslist years ago. In fact, this is the pic from the ad.

I love those early Mac boxes. They're really hard to find near me, despite the fact that many old Mac boxes were made about 100 miles from where I live.

Lookin: i'm not a big fan of red boxes, but that Plvmb box would be a keeper if it was in my hands. NICE FIND!!!

Compu: that MBC stack is certainly different, but most likely the grey is painted over the original red. the little Craftsman machinist box I just sold one on Craigs for $40 so I guess different areas command more money. mine was missing the front cover, but it was in pretty decent shape.

Me two days ago: "Scott, you've gotta cool it with the tool boxes for a while, it's getting stupid"

Me today:

Yeah, they are cool and don't come up that often around here either. And almost never with as complete a set as this one was. Saw a Matco one recently on Craigslist though. Not quite as clean as mine and it didn't have the middle chest or side hanger. Just the top and bottom.

Gonna post this here even though it might not be the kind of toolbox we usually post here. Super happy to have a home for my 3/4" Craftsman socket set now. I got it from 454ragtop who found it at an estate/garage sale in Jan. He wasn't very attached to it and decided it would be appreciated in my shop. Pics of the toolbox as it arrived, after cleanup with steel wool, elbow grease & simple green and with the socket set stored inside.

Is that the 3 drawer you were talking about on the craftsman group?

Sent from my iPhone using The Garage Journal mobile app

Yes. I've been watching it languish on MP for about a month and a half. It was just outside the range of what I consider "local". It started out priced more than I thought it was worth plus what I'd really like is one of those 8 drawers like you've got. The price kept dropping, when it hit 36 bucks I decided to pick it up. It has the AMD embossing but no date stamp. No casters, no key.

I have one of those boxes too, keep an SK Wayne ratchet and some Chrome Vanadium sockets in there. Bit of a frankenset!

Hi

First of all, sorry for the awful quality on the photos....my cell ran out of battery:mad:

I have this Waterloo toolbox:
attachment.php

It is rather ugly and beat up, but it is complete (even comes with two working keys).

It also came with a tool tray, but this is to big and dont fit:
attachment.php

On the right side of the lower drawer, there are holes and traces of a square badge.
I have googled, and searched this forum, to learn that Waterloo Industries, not only made boxes for themselves, but also for other tool brands; Craftsman, Proto, New Briatain, S.K, MAC and probably many more:)

As I will restore it, I am looking for the correct badge... Are there any ways of narrowing it down to the correct badge? And if so, are there any known sources for reproductions of these?

Some samples I found that seem to fit the size and location of the badge:

Posted in one of the Remline threads earlier, but figuredI'd put it here also...

Picked up the bottom and top last year for $100 including a bunch of tools.
Found the top and middle boxes south of Hartford a month ago for $50. I feel lucky to have found the middle box... haven't seen too many middles in any of the Remline threads.

Patiently waiting Outlaw's reveal.

Crazy busy three days. I did get this late last week, but then I bought the van...

So its better and worse than I'd hoped. mostly better, It did have the loose tray! Anyone have any pics or list of what is supposed to be in this box?

But I missed noticing the missing hasp. One bottom corner needs spot welded, not sure my spot welder can reach... It has some rust, but nothing Evaporust won't take care of.

That is assuming I can find some that si not an arm and a leg. I think this state HATES anything good, even if its safer for the environment! The best deal is via Amazon and guess what? they won't ship it here. :wtf:

HF is nearly $30 a gallon! :headscrat WHY? HEY KALIFORNIA! ITS NOT A HAZARD!

Rant off.

Mid 60’s craftsman boxes. One complete restored, one top box in original condition, debating its restoration.

Great finds, WMB!!!

—Thanks Shelby.

— Outlaw, l was the one that posted the craigslist add for that box. My hope was that someone who would appreciate the box would get it. Congrats.
You ****! Even if you quadrupled his ask plus shipping, I’d say you still got a good deal considering I’m sure there are others out there that happily would have paid that for that pretty rare box.
Enjoy

I really like the Remlines. I've never seen one of their intermediate boxes. Nice stuff!

Outlaw,

First of all, congrats. Nice box. If you didn't know, it's a No. 9989 Master Tool Chest.

Some comments on the date of production and some of the features....

Most guys automatically date a dark olive baked enamel box to wartime, but Plomb was actually painting their boxes dark olive baked enamel in the 1930's, switched very briefly to Chinese red in 1941, had to switch back to dark olive for WWII, and then switched back to Chinese red after the war.

Note that your box is embossed with the old (pre-1936) logo, PLOMB TOOL CO vs. PLVMB TVVL CV. It's not unusual to see early wartime boxes embossed like that. Theories are they had a large stockpile or their suppliers were slow to change their stamping dies. Sometime a wartime box with the old logo will have a sticker on it with the new logo. It would be natural to associate your stencil with a military application, but nothing about what is stenciled smacks as military.

The one feature that may help date it to early 1930's is the removeable tray. This item was discontinued in WWII as unnecessary (steel saving measure).

As for contents, the No. 9989 Master Tool Chest housed a number of different Master Tool Sets, with a number of different tools and arrangements. In the mid 1930's, they advertised three sets: No. 9989-D had 71 tools, 9989-E had 52 tools, 9989-F had 20 tools. Later (1941), they offered a -G (49 tools), and in 1943, just an -A (83) and -B (50).

Unless you really want to put a particular set from a particular year in it, you could probably throw all your Plomb collection in there, call it a day, and be 85% correct!

Quick addendum: you might want to post a link on the Plomb thread. You may get more comments (opinions) on the age, stencil, etc. There is one member, I forget who, perhaps Rubicon, who thinks the shape of the corners (rounded vs square) is a timeline tell. I looked through all the catalogs once and found that inconclusive.

Nice box. Looks very familiar. The odd thing is I bought a gallon of Evaporust from Amazon shipped to my house in January, no problem. I checked and they will no longer ship it to me now that it’s February. Go figure! My local O’Reillys has it at a slightly higher price.

Thanks guys. D432 I'l check O'Reilys.

Lugs, I guess Id be interested in the list for the largest 9989-D list in the 30's and the 83 pc. set in '43; if only to see if I have em all.

Were the sets different numbers for different configurations? of just "more is better"?

I'll cross post later. (I JUST got home after a >12 hr day...)
