I was reminded that I had never got around to posting a photo of this vise. Bought it from a lady whose father had purchased in the 1920's. It was well taken care of and even has the original triangle brackets. I love the worn paint surface on it.

*I had it mounted on a stand before, but decided it was worthy of a better looking mounting, so just sitting half bolted to a steel plate right now. Too many projects...

Nice! So nonchalant. Oh yeah I forgot to post a pic of this old vise I picked up. It's an Emmert.

Just kidding with ya, although in reality I'm quite confident any other regular contributor here would have been taking pics and posting them before heading home with it. Smitty would have been taking pics of it in the front seat WHILE driving home with it.

Great score. I'll find one someday.

I picked up these two small vises over the weekend. I was hoping someone on here could give me some info. The do not have any marks I could find on them.

Thanks

Seriously, you won't believe me but I think I bought it almost a year ago. I mentioned at the time on here as I was really excited and people asked for me to post photos. At that time I was waiting to get it mounted on something I could be proud of. Went after one of my other dream vises, got that one and sort of forgot about the Emmert. (I am usually in to the NEXT vise, not the one I already bought). I have actually had it under a cover so people would not see when they are buying other lesser vises from me. Oops, I let out one of my secrets...

The funniest part of that Emmert story is that I had been looking for an Emmert machinist vise for quite a while. Asked everyone, they told me "good luck" etc. The ones I did find, that I might be able to buy, were in lousy condition. When it appeared on ebay at auction. I was so afraid someone would talk her into cancelling the ebay listing and selling it to them outright, that I used the Make an Offer and offered her TWICE the opening price. She did not have ANY trouble accepting my offer since she thought she would be lucky to get the opening price and would have been willing to sell it for less than that.

I may not be a $mart buyer, but I do have a lot of fun!

Mr. Barns, an Emmert in that nice of condition with the original furniture, is just about as rare as that #408 you're looking for.---Not quite, but close.---Awsome score.

I do not give up easily. I enjoy the challenge when someone tells me I will never find something.

Another day is passing, as the sun slowly sets on the lonely, under appreciated large vise stand. It longs to one day fulfill it's purpose, to once again stand proud - with a large 8 inch Reed 408 firmly bolted to it.

The funny thing is that if you have the guts to come out and tell everyone one particular vise you are trying to find, you do not have as much trouble buying other different vises.

Similarly, I bought this heavy duty stand for a yet-to-be-purchased BIG vise. In the meantime, I plan to mount the 130+ pound Hollands 16 I picked up last weekend.

Called on a CL ad for a Holland 14 today but was second caller so I'm the backup buyer as of now but seller said he had a couple other old dusty vises in the shed. Took a ride and came home with a Craftsman 51801, a Reed 203 and Reed 22 pipe vise. All were indeed covered in dust. $60.00 for the three of them.

This is probably the coolest vise I've found in a while, exposed screw to boot!!

Pinch Bug made by Akron Wrench & Vise Co. Akron, O.
Tilts, swivels, and you can mount the vise body horizontally on the swivel base by removing the arm.

Has 2-1/4" jaws, opens 2-1/2". Replaceable jaw faces. Vise made of drop forged steel.

Here is another pinch bug. This one has tall jaws. The vise has been on eBay for a long time and the only description in the box is one word Nice.

Interesting, seems that type is more common.

...inventor John R. Long also co-invented the Versa-Vise/Gyro Vise. As well as the Jacobson swivel/tilt vise I've seen pictures of here. And a number of wrench designs.

Attached Versa-Vise and Jacobson pics to show design similarity.

Adding pics of my "new" Reed 405 1/2. I am really happy with the condition. This is my first machinist vise, and I am super pleased. The thing is a beast.

The dynamic jaw came out with only a minimal amount of filing on the end, and the swivel pin and swivel jaw came out with a little sweat, but no blood. There are a couple of chips where it was hammered on (you can see the big chips in the "dust skirt" of the swivel jaw and the shaft dust cover on the dynamic jaw. I see no other damage or cracks. Even the collar is clean.

A couple of things I noticed:
There is only one swivel lock bolt/handle - I've read that most Reeds have two.
The only patent listed is the 1908 patent. No dates in the casting for 1912 and 1914 patents

Very nice looking reed. If you could give me a close up of the jaw serrations that will help date your vise as one of the missing patents relates to the serrations on the cast in place jaws. It’s very old though as it also has the handle that has cast balls on the ends.

That is a neat vise and designed by JR Long. Patent is a little different in the mounting but I have seen the same in his other patents. I added it to the spreadsheet under Pinch Bug. Nice grab Dave and thanks for the Patent info.

RB, let me know when you get a hard on for a Prentiss 98 ;)

Jeff, I realize just the name Prentiss 98 probably brings most vise enthusiasts to at least half mast, but that might be more vise than I can handle? Private message me a photo or two and tell me what you need to get for it.

I saw this advertised when I was in Oregon a couple of weeks ago. I remember thinking I was going to regret not making the 300 mile round trip detour to go look at it and somebody would get what I imagine is a very rare vise in the odd extra 1/2 inch size. Even I did not expect it to be that nice and I tend to be overly optimistic. YOU DONE REAL GOOD !!!:thumbup::thumbup:

Mr Jeff, excuse my last posting to you, I forgot that anyone that has a vintage American made vise with jaws WIDER than 8 inches and heavier than 300 pounds has earned the respect to be addressed as SIR or MR.

sir

noun
used as a polite or respectful way of addressing a man, especially one in a position of authority.

I saw it when it was originally posted for $500. I wasn't too interested until I saw it down to $350. I got it for $300. It is definitely worth it to me.

There is a Reed 105R nearby for $150. Tempting.

Checked another manufacturer off my list of 8” vises, bought this Columbian 508! Will have more pictures once I take possession but the video that was sent to me shows the jaws to be in pristine condition so I’m quite happy!

Funny, I thought it was a deal at $500 and would have gladly bought it for that. Just did not have the extra time as I was frantically running from bad weather having barely stayed in front of it driving across the midwest all that week. I was crossing the mountains in Oregon coming down from Washington state, it was snowing fairly heavy and me and and the trucks had slowed down to less than 40 mph. My main thought that night was to go south and get out of the mess. When I woke up the next morning in Nevada, I actually remember thinking, "I should have gone over and got that vise while I was up there."

If you are still using words like "tempting" you do not have a problem and are not a viseaholic yet.

Aggie, if that 105 is isn't beat to a pulp, you would do well to upgrade from tempted to ownership.

Andrew, that's a beauty.---Can barely see the line where the jaws meet.---Boy that's one thing you really want to see.---Kind of putts all other worries to bed.

It seems like this vise (with the swivel jaw) is one of the exceptions to the "dollar-a-pound" rule.

I am curious to know about the jaws. Is it safe to assume that someone milled them smooth?

My first "dollar a pound" posting was a joke. In my world a dollar a pound refers to scrap and ****...

The more knowledgeable vise collectors on here might know exactly how they were done, but it seems like they would have had to machine the jaws.

So you are wondering if you should pay less for the two vises than I would have paid for the one. It is all a matter of personal choice, but as mentioned before, you do not have a vise problem yet.

A couple of years ago I saw where a Reed 105 was for sale at a pawn shop in Ohio for $50, I called them immediately and wanted to buy it over the phone and I would come pick it up Monday They told me their boss would not let them take credit cards over the phone. It was Thursday and I asked them if they would hold it till Monday. The guy on the phone said it had been there for months and would be there Monday unless it sold Saturday. I called Saturday at closing time and was told it was still there. I drove over 100 miles out of the way (in the snow) to get it on my trip, when I got there early Monday morning it was gone. No one supposedly knew what happened to it. I figured one of the employees decided if a guy from Texas was excited about it, that it was worth more than that and he bought or hid it. If you are that lowlife person(s)/liars reading this - No wonder you losers work in a hole in the wall, bottom feeding pawn shop, in a drug infested neighborhood. You do not have to be smart or clever to lie, you just have to be dishonest (we call them "crooks" around these parts).

I need some help from the collective vise mind regarding this hunk I bought at the flea this morning.

Markings: Part No 2, 5 in, DROPFO 5. Letter "N" stamped in the bottom "sleeve" that fits in the swivel.

Characteristics:
-Integrated swivel base. There is a lower threaded shaft with arm that pulls a combination wedge and spindle nut into the vise housing. The vise housing has a "split" in the center, so when the lower spindle is tightened, it provides the clamping power to lock the swivel. Nothing else except gravity holds the vise housing into the swivel base.
-Round sleeve, spindle threads are enclosed in it.
-There is a pin that holds the threaded spindle to the moving jaw piece.
-Nice rotating ball ends on the arm.
-58lbs as shown.

Unfortunate things: Wrong jaws welded to the vise. Lots of what look to be grinder marks on the side, perhaps they removed the manufacturer name in the process.

So, has anyone seen something like this before? I bought it because I thought it was "unusual", and I liked the general shape of it.

Any insight appreciated.
