I don't think that I've uploaded pictures of these sets yet... both came from the flea market a while back

Some really nice pieces and sets. I really like the Hinsdale graphics on their boxes. I don't see many of these at sales where I live in Nor Cal.

I only have a couple of pieces. Here is my big boy. A U.S.S DBE 5/8 3/4 offset that looks to have been used at a refinery. The sizes threw me at first but then I recognized the U.S.S. mark, which I had overlooked. The 3/4" side has an opening of 1 1/4". The 5/8" side has an opening of 1 1/16"

I started collecting these Hinsdale 1/2” drive, 4 point sockets a few moths ago. I think I only need the 9/16” and 11/32” to complete the set. I have a few duplicates if anyone else is trying to make this set.

Hinsdale is one of those brands I don’t seem to find or buy much of, but I picked up this little 1/4” ratchet today. It was so ugly I couldn’t leave it behind.

About 35 years ago I acquired some sockets from an estate. I recently dug them out and sorted through them. I believe that this Hinsdale SJ 8-C socket is for Stromberg carbruetor jets.

I know what you mean. These are not pretty, but I still buy them.

I rarely see Hinsdale tools but I grabbed these sockets at a sale in Marin County last month. They look pretty early to me.

This lone Hinsdale 1 3/16” 3/4 drive socket is the only Hinsdale I have, and is also the only Hinsdale I’ve ever come across while tool hunting. It’s not in great shape but I couldn’t leave it behind.e824c72e5c20a43c9cdf0aff602c3180.jpg

Picked this up today for $3. Not sure what's missing and haven't had time to go through it yet and clean it up a little. Ratchet is frozen at the moment. That will soon change. Not sure what that attachment is that slides onto the plug. If anyone can provide some insight into what the box should have and what the attachment is it would be greatly appreciated. The box says
Hinsdale no G 20. If that helps. Thanks in advance.

The attachment is an adjustable valve lapper. You would open or close that to fit the size of the little slots on either side of the valve head. Typically used with a speeder, after adding your grit. But I suppose a ratchet would work.

Thanks for the info. I found an ad for the g20 set. I believe it came with a speeder. Couldn't pass the set up for the price. Hinsdale seems very scarce around here so I had to grab it.

Nice set. Unfortunately, Hinsdale catalogs are rare as hen's teeth. I haven't seen that particular set. Looks unused!

Times two-very excellent condition set-could this have been a leftover-surplus military issued set from the war/s era?? More pics may give some type of indication! Are the tools coated in cosmoline/heavy rust proof grease/coating? Excellent score MM-you did well!

Beautiful, mint-y, museum quality set. Besides the condition, it has some remarkable pieces, such as the starter/manifold (half moon) wrench, the wingnut socket, and the bigass 6-point drain plug socket.

It's hard to be definitive about something like this, especially because we see so many sets like this from so many mfgrs, but I don't recall seeing a half moon wrench in the lid of a kit before. Very cool.

Adding to the frustration of sparse catalogs (early undated 30s, and a 46) is Hinsdale's production. They had alot of style and marking variants, and seemingly in parallel in some cases. We just don't have a good timeline/evolution like we do with other mfgrs.

I'm away from my references this week, includingcthe copies of the catalogs I mentioned, but I do believe we can narrow it down with the pieces, as Dan suggested, including that DBE with the 8-point service openings, for example, which I believe is a Ford brake wrench. And even the case, with that type of layout/holders.

I don't think it's later than early 50s and it could be as early as late 30s, but doesn't look like other late 30s we have seen. As I said, Hinsdale is confounding that way.

More pics of the markings might help.

The earlier boxes had lids embossed with the logo or decals inside. This box looks like it would have to have a decal on top. Edit: or possibly a plate on top of the lid you haven't shown?

I am guessing late 40s early 50s at latest.

But I'll be interested in seeing other thoughts.

Old Fords (especially Model A's) were long-lived in NZ. This is partially due to the combination of a Ford assembly plant Down Under, and the fact that NZ is so isolated that the residents had to make do and repair things instead of buy new. This is why the brake wrench is understandable in this set.

Perhaps Hinsdale saw NZ as a specialty market that was overlooked by the larger manufacturers? In that case, it is unlikely that US catalogs would show a set like this, since it was tailored to that particular market.

Thanks for your insightful complementary points on my initial observations, Jock. It does have that all-in-one special set feel due also to the other unusual pieces (half moon wrench, wingnut and drain plug sockets). I think you've nailed it. As for US market catalogs or ads, they would still be useful for the style and markings though. Even though the pieces are a special assemblage, they wouldn't make special tools with alternate dies and tooling. Edit: or would they?

I'm wondering if you are on to something there Dan.... During and probably more likely just after we had a huge influx of American Ford & Chevy Trucks that were sold off.... we see very little Hinsdale tools here but maybe it was a vehicle specific set for one of those wartime trucks.

I'll get my hands on it later in the week and get a bunch more pics up here.

Great! Will appreciate seeing more pics-will be very useful in further I.D.
I never see any full sets in this brand in my location-as I would think that more surplus sets were E. or W. coast shipped/stored for WW2 issue to be sent out where the action was. I will have to check my meager stash to see if I own any of the speciality tools!.....Cranky

I've never seen or heard of a set like this for any on-board WWII military truck set. It wouldn't be any of the Chevy or Dodge 2.5 Ton trucks or less, or the Mack or White. And Hinsdale was not a supplier of the Ford military sedans. And bigger trucks had bigger drive sets. I'll poke around my WWII era references when I get the opportunity later in the week.

The last year for the square brake adjusters on Fords was 1938 for both cars and trucks. That would make all WWII production hydraulic brakes.

Expensive as all heck for the 30’s! Would you guys agree? That could have something to do with the limited number floating around.

Good sleuthing, Jock and 3bay. That's what I mean about Hinsdale being confounding. I have a 3/8-inch drive set from the 30's (posted upthread) and a few 1/4-inch drive pieces from the same era and the ratchets are the flat handled jobbies with the knurled raised rectangle surrounding a panel with the branding. But the part numbers for the handles and the sockets are all the same as in these ads. Looks like this style followed that style.

Note that none of the sets are Mark's set, though.

In reviewing the ads, and going back to Mark's set, I am thinking the socket I misidentified as for wingnuts (to the right of the drag link bit) might be for Zerk fittings instead. One of the sets in the ads had two special sockets "for alemite and drag links."

I'll pick it up today....

I'm sure that is the Zerk socket, I think that was shown on Alloy Artifacts, it does seem "wierd" that is has the Brake adjuster wrench and the manifold wrench in the set, there are some other 6 point sockets from what i remember back at the weekend that almost had same finish as modern day impacts and they may have been Hex drive.......all can be revealed once I get it home !

Nice ratchet. How long is that one? Check out post 115, back a couple pages. It's a 9/32" ratchet the size of a 3/8" drive. I'll have to get the length on it.

That set is even slicker from close up! If you scroll back to page 1 and page through this thread, you will see several boxes with similar embossing on the lid. I have a few. That would've pegged it as 30's immediately. The cat pages 3bay posted include a 13R set and a 29R set. Unfortunately no 23R.

WTF is that socket I was calling a big drain plug socket? Now that you've flipped it around in your pic, with the 6-point service opening faced down, it has exposed what I though was going to be a 1/2-inch drive opening. It looks like it's built to turn from a couple different angles, with that slot, and the opening on the side of the base. But with what?

Super nice set... Very cool to see this configured with the specialty service tools.

This really looks strange. Cut/modified perhaps?

That one has got me fooled as well . It’s marked 1 3/8 Hinsdale S-44-F , looks to have been manufactured rather than modified, the chrome is now intact. Is this set with the extra wrenches , which look like the do belong , a specific service set to do a particular job ? And this socket holds the key to us cracking the mystery ? Here’s some pics ....
