Anyone ever seen a 7 drawer with bottom storage? It’s up as a 60’s Craftsman. Looks like it might have been grey at some point.IMG_2429.jpg

You're in luck! I recently spent an hour browsing catalogs trying to track down the years these were advertised.

There are two different 7-drawer roller cabinets.

The first iteration was from 1960-62, and it had 5 full-width drawers and 2 half-width drawers.

The second iteration came in 1974 and had 3 full-width drawers and 4 half-width drawers. The gray & red combo would have been been from 74-76. After that, they would be red with charcoal gray drawers.

There are no 7-drawer roller cabinets advertised from 1963-1973

The roller cabinet you posted would have been offered from 1974-76

Tool_scrounge, the pic I see you posted is only a 3 drawer roller. The roller I saw up for sale has 4 split drawers and 3 regular, as well as bottom storage.

Edit- tool_scrounge I see it now. Lol. Didn’t hold on the pic to see that it went to another thread. It is grey. Nice roller.

Rileysan, that looks more like it on the second pic. I don’t own it, I just saw it for sale and thought it was interesting as I hadn’t seen that configuration of drawers on a grey/red roller. Looks like they were a dark grey maybe black from that advertisement.

You can't trust the illustrations to be 100% accurate - especially with colors. The original color would have been like the one D42jeep posted.

Rileysan- duly noted.

Taumac-I was thinking about it since I thought it was some sort of unicorn, as I had not seen those ads. Now I know it’s a common one. Thanks to you guys I didn’t make a $200 blunder. I’m glad I asked. I’ll just keep looking for the 9D roller and 10D chest.

I would definitely look for a 10D chest. I prefer a tall bottom roller. I had a 9D and a 2 5D. I prefer that because next to a 3D bottom all the drawers lined up.

I have one that came with a Craftsman turquois machinists chest on top that I paid $45 for last year. It now holds one of my chop saws.

Freshly picked this morning from the middle of Sam Houston National Forest, a 1972, 6 drawer in good condition with no major rust and no dents or dings. Mrs. Rubicon went along for the ride and we celebrated with an awesome chicken fried steak for lunch! Hiding inside the box was the original owner's guide. I'll try to remember to take some pics of the pages in the guide and post up later along with a photo after clean up is complete on the box. Also shown are my upper and lower from a previous refurb.

Looks like it found a great new home. Congrats.

Really nice RJK!

Does anyone know if the Craftsman Crown Commerical badge was plastic or metal? I feel like I've seen one and it was plastic but I don't trust my memory much these days.

My contribution to the collection:
Has the V logo, but red with gray drawers and a crowntop key. Built May 1975. 26" wide.
I picked it up at an estate sale because the price was right, but kept thinking it looked kind of big - indeed, it's too wide to go where I need it, so it'll have to go on to someone else.

Is that a repaint? Maybe?

I don't think it has been repainted. These boxes just have a lot of different styles, color combos, features, etc. It seems not much is set in stone.

I've got that same box, same color scheme and also a 75. I thought it odd that it has no handles. No top handle to be used as a carry box and no side handles typical of a top chest. It is an oddball. Mine sits under one of my benches and holds all manner of oddball wrenches I find.

No, it's all original paint.

Yes, I found the lack of side handles puzzling too. But on close inspection that's clearly how it was made. No top handle makes sense. It's 28 lbs empty. Loaded, it sure would't be a one-hand carry box!

Question...

Are there any sources for the locks for these? I have an early-mid 70's 7 drawer roller (with the storage cubby beneath) and a matching 12 drawer top chest, one has a key broken in it, the other the keys are way missing...

I pulled the locks but they look like they're rivited together... making me think I'll probably have to replace the things...

Any sources, resources, or ?? I'd order a set from Sears but there hasn't been a sears locally for a year or few...

Thanks,
Susanne

There should be a code on the lock cylinder themselves and keys are available on eBay.

Took a fishing trip up to Toledo Bend lake this weekend and made a stop at a thrift store near the lake as I was leaving. Found this little 1968 two drawer that is in great condition, had the tray inside and which will now get a good clean up and paint job and join its brothers which I first showed in the post below. The big surprise came when I started cleaning it out and under one of the drawer liners I found the original owner's manual (second of these I've found), a form to order a personalized name plate, and the orginal sales receipt for the box! Sold new in April of 1968 in Camden, NJ for $29.99! Wouldn't you like to know how something like this makes its way from NJ to East TX and now South TX. I'll try to remember to post an after photo when I'm finished with it.
