Thanks Vise. Wow, what a transformation on the 58. The burnished amber paint really sets it off, nice work.

Feeling pretty lucky this morning. Converted my 6" Wilton from a 600N to a 600S. Saw this FB ad earlier in the week.6ce89b5a05993a4aaa17852f9cf80854.jpgI didn't need a concrete anchored stand but recognized what I was sure was a large Wilton swivel base so I asked for a couple additional pics and measurements.d977d73fdca6bfe581fabda1ddcc3b36.jpg66b3f5ac072d2da333dd32412c442f86.jpgI was pleased to see the inner ring too and I was 95% sure it was the right base but knew I'd buy it either way so I offered her $20 if I could just remove the base. She agreed and we met this morning. Sure enough a perfect fit. I'm going to media blast it tomorrow so just a little clean up today to get a pic.a2f07b8758c347fc63165144914e3201.jpgBeing indecisive about purchasing a swivel base for this vise is what has primarily caused me to drag my feet on getting her painted and put back together so I think I'll get on that now. The only decision left is do I just want to use some big 5/8" bullet shaped acorn cap nuts for the swivel lockdowns or order the O.E. assemblies from Nick. Well, that and picking a paint color!

Chris,
Dang man! You are living right aren't you? Any chance that your vise may have once been on this very stand? If there was I think that stand would have had to come home with you as well! What did she want to the whole kit and caboodle?

Nice find.

In Louisiana, quality vises seem to be few and far between. But I did manage to find a 6.5" Wilton Tradesman at an auction this week. I think I'm going to clean it up and use it as a blacksmithing vise.

I assure u the pickings in Texas are slim to none and way overpriced !!
I must admit tho, I am jealous of the people who live in states Where they have to beat the vises off with a stick lol

Nice score on the swivel base Chris. I remain in search of a base for a 6” Starrett, so it’s always nice to see someone finding what they’re looking for. I don’t think I could have left that stand behind though.

Anyone have a newspaper or magazine advertisement for Wilton bullet vises dated 1959?

Chrissnazzy posted an eBay sale of a 1956 catalog.---Don't guess this helps.

I did notice that the shipping weight on the 800S in 56 was 248lbs. and now the shipping weight is 238lbs..---Less iron in their diet, so some weight loss was to be expected..:D

Re: Looking for 1973 6" Wilton 9-600 Monster Bullet Vise brochure or paperwork

The Wilton catalog scans I have saved are either newer than 1973 or much older. I have a 600 that is dated 1986 and it's main body is the same as yours with the arched "Wilton" script but it has the newer style dynamic jaw.

There is a 1956 Wilton catalog ending soon on eBay. I'm watching it in anticipation as the last one went crazy in the final seconds and sold for $242!

My 1963 catalog is the closest I have to what you are looking for. The last pic is from a 1950 catalog.

Usually I can find info about tools by googling the name and part number if available. Can't find much at all on Jorgensen bench vises.

this six inch one is for sale locally for $75, can the vise experts tell me anything about it? US made? Says steel vise, mean anything?

Jorgensen 30856 bench vise

You guys have obviously forgot more than I will ever learn about vintage vises. Want to thank everyone for positing the catalog scans!

Anyone have a Shiller Park Wilton with a 1950's date code with the original paint intact? Would like to figure out some of the factory colors they used in the 1950s from that location.

Here's a very typical Craftsman 506-51800 that I bought from EBay pretty cheap. It came in the original orange/red color but the paint was a little beat up. No damage anywhere, really nice jaws. It has the swivel nut and spindle handle with the tapered ends. Wire brushed and a little flap wheel treatment back to bare iron. I'm going to leave it with just an oil coating. No more project vises in the garage now, so I'll have to get back on the hunt.

OK Vise Friends:
Decided to show off a couple of recent 3-1/2" combo bench vise restorations.
First one is a Craftsman 506-5801.
Second one is a Reed Utility vise No.23-1/2. Very well made, like their larger vises.

Mark, I really like that color scheme on the Craftsman.---I might have to copy that.

Thanks for the kind words. The classic Craftsman is one the easiest vise to do a 2 tone or 3 tone paint job on. Here's a Harley Davidson vise I did a few years back.

To the person looking for Rock island 542-bx pipe jaw info, here is what I've got. All 3 jaws look to be identical. The holes I don't believe are factory.

^ That one has been listed for sale for several months and despite lowering the price multiple times, hasn't sold.

It has been on craglist before also probably for the last year or so. The guy lives about 2 hours from me and I’m not going to lie I would like to buy it from him as I’ve got a smaller colborne just like it but $450 is to much for a vise with a replacement handle chewed up jaws. i paid $60 shipped for mine off of eBay 4 years ago.

Curious if anyone knows if the OLD anvils marked "ACME" are the same brand/company as the one that made these vises?

These vises were made by Colborne mfg company out of Chicago. They now make industrial kitchen machines such as large pizza ovens. However at the turn of the century colborne rebuilt and made new hit and miss engines which powered machines kind of like steam boilers. I believe colborne had a foundry on site and would have machines to do the work on the vises. The one thing I can’t figure is if these vises were used at the shop or they were sold in a catalog. As mine came from Chicago and that larger vise is not to far away from Chicago as well.

Anyone have a guess for a modern paint that would match this color? I stripped off many layers of paint to get to this which I think is the original color. Maybe a gray or faded black? hard for me to tell.

Someday I will take better photos and post them, but for now....
..I have yet to do so92df89d8ddb8aeaac66c9a6b127b70e5.jpg

Bought this little guy a while back and it got beat to shi’it in shipping unfortunately. Even got a crack. But i still love the little guy.

A photo to Trijeff to discuss how best to mount it on the stand. Again please notice the superior crappy photog shills to maximize sun to back to cast shadow over image, shadow of self, no composition, and even have the nomenclature of the vise not showing in the photo. Thank you - I try hard.

picked up another Reed 106 today (2nd one in two weeks) along with
a forgotten Hollands H that was sitting in a corner of the shop. Reed didn't have speck of grease on the screw but both should clean up nicely.

I agree, but will still like to know what color that is supposed to be. Also considering getting a swivel base and would like to know if I can reasonably match that color/look partially re painting a swivel base.

The East Coast Smitty is back in action!

Nice, bob, a Hollands 23-1/2 was my first "real" vise, I have a soft spot for Hollands. And I looooovvvveeeeee Reeds, especially 6"+ Reeds!

I picked up this vice today, found a pic in a 1920 catalogue and believe it to be a 204. Issue is it's missing the quick-action part. Wondering if I get genuine parts for it or if parts from an English brand like Parkinson or Record are compatible?
Cheers from Australia!
