Here is a march of 1958 108R I picked up a while back... It came out of the Goodyear Plant in Akron Ohio.

Rusty:
I believe the strategy was to make the nut softer because it was back then a replaceable part. The screw and handle assembly was to be protected from wearing out.

.

I like that idea. The nut was worn to a knife edge and yet the threads on the screw seemed like new.

Shiftless:

Thanks for the kind words. I had to laugh after reading your quip about vise collecting/potato chips "bet you can't eat (only) one". Within one week of finishing the restore on my dads old vise, I was on "ebay/craigslist/offer up" and here is the Prentiss I couldn't resist.
After cleaning it up a bit I noticed "USN" stamped on the static jaw. I knew right then I would restore it and give it to my son in law who is an active SEAL, for his garage. That, and because he is die hard Yankees fan he will love that the vise is from New York. All this means I have to get "another" vise....already is communication with a guy on Offer Up about a Parker 974 lol.

Hi Hoorn, I’m Smitty. Nice find on that Prentiss, it looks like it’s in great condition. The Navy really liked to stamp their property. These are both Prentiss vises with the navy stamps.fe4c13e28cf55d106768a09f4bd6cb84.jpg222e9c0f46385223159986f067daf871.jpg

Smitty, awesome stamps. Thank you for sharing. From what I've read, your Navy stamp with the anchor was part of a larger Naval contract, whereas my simple USN was perhaps some random purchase. Love that anchor emblem, I'll be on the lookout for one of those.

I was driving home last night and this popped up on the board an hour away. I couldn’t just let it sit there. This is a first generation Wilton C0 with 3 1/2” jaws.67bfb0e05be680f2b4c4d66c0bc9d5c6.jpgdbc67907291e7cf126a05e36bad49de9.jpg865fb6c8776e1d3fc8c765ae57471117.jpg

Sorry about the mess and dim lit pics. this is in the corner of my back garage where all the forging, welding, grinding and heavy work is done (to keep the mess out of the main shop). some day I'll unbolt them all and bring them up to the main shop for a full line up pic in good lighting. I just need a 105R to complete the 100 R series set. Only you can appcreiate these pics because you know the size of a 106R, as most others won't because there is nothing there for scale....

106 vs 108... I too thought the 106R was huge... Thought being the key word.

WOW that thing is a monster, that’s cool you have them all but the 105. Does that mean you have a 109? That vise spreadsheet shows a 109. Thanks for the comparison photos.

I was looking at my old vise that I sved from my Grandpa Borntrager from our ranch in Montana. It is a good old vise. I decided to look and see when it was made. I came across this forum. I saw an old post where somebody said Holland vises did not make a 104 1/2 I guess they did. Any other info on it would be nice.

Hi Borntrager, nice Hollands, maybe you can add the max opening and weight when you get time. I assume it has 4-1/2" jaws. Doing this will help others to see your picture and the vise spec:s in the Vise Spreadsheet located in my signature. Welcome aboard.

Can someone help me identify this vise?

I need help identifying this Reed vise. It has no markings. Type Machine vise, weight 122.6 pounds, jaw with 6" , opens 8 ", no swivel. I believe it was manufactured prior to 1912.

I got this Chas Parker the other day. I’ve been looking for a 4.5 inch or bigger Chas Parker. They don’t pop up that often in my neck of the woods. I have a soft spot for their lines.

There's a #34 on page 161, post 3216.---But Glen 63 says it weighs 178lbs.

Here's a #31 and a #32 on eBay which are smaller than yours but are on the same order as yours---I'm thinking that yours is supposed to have a notched base and is what is referred to as a through the bench swivel base.---The #32 is missing the notched base but you can see the protruding nob on the bottom of the static base that will match any notch on the swivel base..---Does yours have a nob on the bottom?

Does anyone have an affordable 4” or 5” American made vise for sale? Perhaps a Wilton bullet that someone would like to make a deal on for a forum member?? [emoji1317]

Just completed the latest find. Wilton 1760. It was in really good shape. Dated 6 - 89. New stainless steel hardware and new paint. Wire brush and some polishing. Also posted in Wilton Date Stamp forum. e963359bd4a2043036823c90a36b8ab5.jpgab0fcf287122e95b0ebf0387413ae283.jpg9b177de3a06e9b0c2d6d54ab2810f840.jpgca7651eaca1f63ad53cd6780c06aa41d.jpg5c3165358a30d336a78ecadede1799b4.jpg3dbb31acca1e2543541d286efc1c495e.jpgfc1e961758709db0a1d152e687c41a2b.jpg723e0b210a8cdf4712281ab6a3281126.jpgf2e0833f2868a44eada8916bffc8eeea.jpg

They did make a Reed 109 w/ the 4 bolt base but as AngrBeaver said, they didn't continue to make any 9" models once they transitioned to the R series and later N/S series.6aa32c39b4d96e1c64763d24cd842fe5.jpgI believe this one is part of an awesome collection of large vises owned by a GJ member in Kansas.

Built a maintenance cart out of a cab they were throwing away. Replaced the broken casters with pneumatic and mounted my 973 Parker.

I’ve got a 974 Parker like new, and an unmarked Prentiss no. 21 with 5 1/4 in. Jaws and a swivel base. 974 doesn’t have the swivel base. PM me if you’re interested and I’ll dig them out and send some pictures.

Hey all, haven’t posted on here in a while, but some of you on FB might have seen some of my recent posts.

Past couple months I’ve scored a handful of nice ones, and I’ve also refinished a few as well.

New arrivals:
- Prentiss Bull Dog No. 56 (someone put some new jaws on it)
- Wards master Anvil
- Columbian 505
- Columbian 505M2
- Rock Island 154A (SJ-Coachmakers, KScott added to the spreadsheet)

Freshly Finished:
- Columbian 5C woodworking vise (Torched BLO and Maple Jaws)
- Athol 614 1/2 (Faux Patina came out nicely)
- Craftsman 4 1/2 (Japan one I cleaned up as a gift to a good friend)

I found a Hollands 14 vise in nice shape. Have not been able to find much information about the brand online.

View media item 104681

Small world you got that from brimfield right? I went out there to look at a Parker once and it was brazed so I avoid that area. Looks like you found a dandy nice and clean.

Anyone recognize what model and size this vise is? The listing states; "large bench vise approx. 8" jaws".

From looking at pictures on-line, it sure looks like a Craftsman, but I haven't seen any pictures that show a built-in (retained) wrench like this one has to lock the swivel base. Also can't find any evidence that Craftsman ever made an 8" vise. Although of course a lot of sellers confuse vise opening length versus vise jaw width, so I'm guessing this is just a run-of-the-mill small Craftsman.

Thanks, Tom

Misidentified vise
No matter what light I look at this at 3x magnification the stamp is 763.
Guess I need a loupe or someone with newer eyes to check my work.

Per the catalogs
Stanley #765
2-1/2" Jaws
---------------
Doesn't match any thing I read.
2-1/2" removable Jaws
Opens safely 1-3/4"
Weight 3.93 lbs.

Ahh the error! Mine
attachment.php

Stanley #763
2" Jaws
---------------
Doesn't match any thing I read.
2" removable Jaws
Opens safely 1-3/4"
Weight 3.93 lbs.

A different style 765 is listed on the spreadsheet.

attachment.php

Pay no attention to the broken screw shown, that's another lesson learned,
only tap once with impact tool.

Decided to alleviate any further aggravations and replace the screw.
Parts show they were available, donor vise had longer screws with a thicker head.
After some not so fancy file work now have four holding screws.
attachment.php

Moved cuts
The 1941 catalog shows a 763 with the hardened, machined, fitted.
(welded) jaws. With the Stanley name cast on the side.

attachment.php

The 1949 catalog shows a new style of 763. With removable, diamond checked steel jaws.
Possibly they used up stock within those years to make way for the change?

Anyone recognize what model and size this vise is? The listing states; "large bench vise approx. 8" jaws".

From looking at pictures on-line, it sure looks like a Craftsman, but I haven't seen any pictures that show a built-in (retained) wrench like this one has to lock the swivel base. Also can't find any evidence that Craftsman ever made an 8" vise. Although of course a lot of sellers confuse vise opening length versus vise jaw width, so I'm guessing this is just a run-of-the-mill small Craftsman.

Thanks, Tom

Yep, Craftsman made an 8''er but it was made in Japan.---Were only about 120lbs. which is very light for a vise with 8'' jaws.---But that particular one you're looking at just looks like a typical, (what I call a Chevron Craftsman), probably 4 or 5''er.

EDIT----That vise doesn't look to have been beaten up from the pic, but looks like years of exposer and neglect.---With a little TLC I think it would clean up rather nicely.---If you get it, take before and after's.

Added a pic of what that one might look like cleaned up a bit.---Notice the Chevrons on the side and the Crown Emblem.---I think this is what you are looking at.
