I picked up this
rough machinist box, missing a latch and the front panel, a few months ago for $5. Yesterday, I pulled the drawers and drilled out the rivets on the remaining latches, scrubbed the musty dirt, and banged out the worst of the dents. There are two tears (right & left corners) in the sheet metal, along the bottom line of the too tray, where I assume stresses focused from abuse. Interesting how it received both the red and black paint after losing the right latch and the owner-added padlock hasp on the lid.

I was pleased with the condition of the top handle under three layers of paint.

I’m 90% sure I’ll drill out the rivets attaching the hinge and folding lid prop, which will make further straightening and painting easier. One rivet is loose in the wobbly hinge anyway.
I’ll clean up the drawers and patch over the holes, see about some replacement latches. Also considering dressing it up with four corner reinforcements/feet on the bottom (the two front feet will have to be modified to allow drawer clearance).
Then choose a paint. I have hammered silver, but I’m also considering flat olive drab, as I will likely move my firearm-maintenance gear into this from a plastic tacklebox. And thinking about spraying interiors of too tray and drawers with truck bed liner. Anyone do that? I’ve never used it. If it builds too thickly or unevenly, I wouldn’t like the result.
