Re: Show us your cool " old " drill press

Here's my 'new' drill press. My two sons got together and bought it for my 50th birthday last week.
It's a Meddings 'Pacera' bench mount.Needs a clean up after being in storage for the past year or so but works fantastic, far better than the modern **** I've used.
Meddings were an engineering maintainance company from Slough,England.
During WW2 the company were commandeered by the War Office to make drill presses for the war effort. These early Meddings drills had the model name 'Pacera'.Not sure how long they made them for, need to do some research to date it.IT'S HEAVY!!!:D

Here's my Champion Blower & Forge #4-1/2 hand crank drill press. Its a couple hundred pound of iron and it works great for being over 100 years old. It has 2 speeds and automatic feed. Pretty advanced for its day :D

A lot of incredible machines in this thread.

Mine is a spring chicken, compared to most of them. It was built in 1973, so it's only 39 years old. It was a floor model, but I chopped off the column to turn it into a benchtop.

It started out a little rough:

Very nice thread.

I'm going to start looking for an older drill press to restore. I've been inspired.

Cool Thread.

Heres mine, Wartime Walker Turner 900 Series 15" Press with the rare 2' extension and flex lamp. It's the pride of my growing Walker-Turner fleet.

As purchaced:

After the spit-shine:
IMG_0782.jpg

All it needed at this point was an original belt guard.
IMG_0778.jpg

Here's a shot of the adjustable table support I made to reduce flex in the 1" plywood.
IMG_0801.jpg

In it's natural habitat: the shop. I finally found the belt guard, it cost more than I paid for the whole press, lol.

Drill press off craigslist: 80$
Paint and prep: 80$
Rocklers t-track + parts 120$
Belt guard 120$
1"Plywood 0$
Original Flex lamp 0$
Time 2 weeks
-----------------------------
Having a really cool rare old press with High suckage factor, Priceless. ;)

Lots of great iron here! It's good to see so many people are giving new life to these guys.

Here are a few shots of 2 vintage CM DPs waiting for me to go through them.

I also have the table lift for the floor model, it's not installed on it in the picture. I bought and sold another floor model to get the lift.

Thanks for looking.

The motor is reversible. I removed the original ON/OFF toggle switch plate, flipped it over, and made a new decal to indicate FWD/OFF/REV....the 3pdt switch behind the plate consolidates all the functions into one switch:

It came with the slow-speed option, speed range 200-10,000 rpm:

Up until 2 years ago this was still in service!

Re: Show us your cool " old " drill press

My drill press isn't nearly as old or fancy as most of these but I did just recently tear it down and clean/paint it . I can remember when my Dad bought it about 45 years ago , it still runs like brand new .

Here are two CMan "150s" that I rebuilt at the same time. They were in solid shape to begin with - sold one to my buddy and kept one for my shop. Works great!

That looks like the bench version of my Delta floor press...

IMG_3365.jpg

I'm not home at present so I don't have a picture of the base but it's round. That allows the press to be moved very easily by just tilting the press and roll it around. It was purchased new by my Dad when he was 18 years old in 1936 and still has it's original Champion motor. He bought the Champion motor because he couldn't afford the Delta motor. It still wears all it's original paint and has it's original Jacob's keyless chuck. The muti-step pulley arrangement in the center was a Delta option as I recall that he added at a later date, I don't know when but early on in his ownership. He installed a remote on/off switch when he first got it and the one seen is a replacement for his original switch still using the original wire with cloth insulation. He also installed that work light soon after he got it but replaced it's wiring back in the 1970's. At that same time he removed the spindle and had it and it's bearings renovated because he was starting to do some precision work that needed +/- .001" tolerance and he wanted to make sure it would be accurate. Note the table has no accidental holes drilled in it. He made it abundantly clear that he would tan our hides if we didn't line the table up properly prior to drilling. I've got it now and I will pass it on to my son when the time comes and hopefully it will stay in the family indefinitely. I don't ever plan on repainting it, just polish the bare metal surfaces and keep it original. It's highly accurate and given proper care should remain so. I'll try to get a picture of the base when I get done flying.....shortly.

My dad bought this from Lockheed in Burbank many years ago. He said it came from the building where they made P-38s during the war. I have a nearly identical one back home in LA that had belonged to my grandfather (who worked at Lockheed). He bought his at the same time as my dad.

I managed to contact the manufacturer who still keep all the old hand written company records.According to my serial number,it's a MK2 model born on 12th Feb 1958!They were made until 1963 and the company still have a limited range of spares.

Bent Valves I really like the stand you have for the drill press. I might have to steal that idea from you!

Re: Show us your cool " old " drill press

I picked up this beauty from a CL ad the other day, $75. In perfect working condition. I've only done a light clean up with some naval jelly and WD-40, lubed it where necessary.

It's a Crafstman bench model 101.03662, I believe it is 1941/1942 vintage from what others have posted. Someone has added a pipe extension to convert it to a floor model. Very solid, bearings are smooth and the motor runs perfectly.

My new-to-me Meddings MB4 Mk2. Sold new on 16th July, 1964 and in remarkably good condition.

5spd, plus dual-range gearbox for 10spds in total from 80-4000rpm. 7/8" (23mm) drilling capacity. It weighs ~370lbs:

Pulled both out of my grandpa's shop last year. They both need work, which makes a good winter project. The big one is a Champion Blower and forge, I think the little one is too.

Quite a number of Craftsman "150" DPs on here - Here's mine ("Before", the "after" isn't done yet) :D $75.00. "After" is waiting on warm weather, using it as is for now.

I just picked up this old drill press, the guy said this was a Delta but I haven't found any other like it. Very few have the Quill tube like this on top. Does anybody have an idea who made this? The castings all say T11 on them (T11-403, 404, 406. It looks as though the original color was gray. The castings including the top cover are quite heavy.
