That's a slick looking mod, Shopnut! So, when do we get to see the Pneumamechanielectro deploy/stow mechanism for the ladders? If you build it, I will name it -

A.L.F.I.E. - Asylum Loft Fence Ingress/Egress :D

Omphaloskeptic - Glad you approve! A.L.F.I.E., What's it all about? (or do I have that backwards with that Dionne Warwick reference?). It's probably best to keep this railing manual. Some type of powered gizmo is liable to push me off right off the ledge :scared:. I do like the name though.

abstamaria - Thanks for the kind words. You never know how this stuff is going to look until you try it. Sometimes I get lucky. Other times it probably just makes some of you go "what the heck was he thinking".

Foxxtrot - Thanks. A fair amount of days off in December are really helping me make some good progress here. And I have more updates to come - just need to write it up and select the pictures to show ya.

Shopnut, May you and yours have a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year!

P.S. - Oh yeah, stay off the roof tonight! We don't want you to be a victim of a 'hit-and-run', or in this case a 'hit-and-fly'!

Rest assured, Santa didn't have to worry about an accident around my place - I was down on the ground where I belonged!

IT'S TIME TO TACKLE THE FRONT EXTERIOR SIDING JOB…

When I first built the truss beam to support the front storage loft, I installed some temporary siding over it to get me through the wet summer months. Well, we're in our dry season and it was time to knock this project off the list. Here's a little history since it was some time ago: Reply#1404

So this is what it looked like before I tore into it. Actually, the translucent fiberglass panels didn't look as bad as I thought they would and I probably could have lived with them a bit longer.

1693-Front-Loft-656.JPG

The first thing to come down was the decorative door. It was heavier than I thought at about 70 pounds. Here are a couple shots of the manlift set up for the job.

1694-Front-Loft-662.JPG 1695-Front-Loft-664.JPG

I had a little time that evening, so I decided to paint the door in case it was reused. The first picture shows what I started with. The second shows the tan color taped off and freshly painted. And the third, all finished up.

1696-Front-Loft-671.JPG 1697-Front-Loft-673.JPG 1698-Front-Loft-675.JPG

After a little forecasted rain overnight, I was ready to do some real damage.

Well Santa brought me the ladder. Looks very similar to yours. It is the 20.5' reach, type 1 rating. A little flex when at the top but still sturdy, and watch out for the retracting rungs.
Thanks for the info on the ladder
Hope your Hollidays went well.

mdkingsley - Thanks. Things are going to slow down a bit in the next month - I burned up all the vacation in December. :(

akdiesel - Way to go Santa! Oops, forgot to mention about the slamming rungs. I haven't had a finger pinched yet, but I'm sure it will happen one of these days despite all those warning labels.

THE OLD FRONT SIDING COMES OFF…

Here is beginning with the truss beam being exposed to the elements once again.

1699-Front-Loft-681.JPG

And all of the siding off. Note the nice clear sky - I was a happy outdoor DIY'er.

1700-Front-Loft-684.JPG

As I worked my way across one 3 foot panel at a time, I added the remaining lag bolts that were inaccessible before.

1701-Front-Loft-686.JPG

I also made sure I had a decent foundation for the decorative door to mount to in the lower position.

1702-Front-Loft-688.JPG

Then it was time for the house wrap. I had totally overlooked this step when picking up supplies, but luckily I had two partial rolls left over which made it pretty easy marching my way across the face. I ran out and had to resort to some tar paper at the peak to finish it off.

THE NEW (USED) SIDING GOES ON…

The siding being used here is the material removed from directly above the doors (where you see the aluminum foil insulation). I had to cut about 4" off each panel, but not a single new panel was needed. I'm sure I will need to tap into my stash of new panels eventually to finish off the walls above the porch area.

1705-Front-Loft-697.JPG

About half done here. I'm starting to breathe easy, despite the continuing clear sky.

1706-Front-Loft-699.JPG

Almost wrapped up before the sun starts to go down.

1707-Front-Loft-701.JPG

The next morning was spent finishing up all the trim at the ends. Some silicone sealant finished the job.

1708-Front-Loft-703.JPG

I have a bunch of pictures taken of my method of cutting the ribbed siding panels and will show you folks shortly.

DECIDING IF THE DECORATIVE DOORS SHOULD GO BACK ON…

I had my doubts whether the smallish decorative door would still look okay up there on the much larger face, so I mocked up a piece of cardboard the same size and taped it up there. I wasn't going to have time to re-install it anyway during this work session, but I figured I would get a second opinion from Mrs. Shopnut whether it actually should go back up and the exact location if it did.

1709-Front-Loft-709.JPG 1710-Front-Loft-719.JPG

The consensus is it will look better with it. But rather than mounting it where the cardboard was, I should move it up just slightly (maybe 3"). I had the sides centered height-wise below the eaves, unlike how it was before with the middle being centered. I knew it didn't look right before, but a compromise might end up looking the best. I will tape up the cardboard one last time to confirm before drilling holes in that sheet metal.

BTW, the manlift was used exclusively for this siding job and it worked perfectly.

I like it also. The shop has an old factory style appearance to it so the door facade gives that extra touch. Who knows with your talent you may incorporate a beam up there that incorporates the door as a functioning one to lift items up there.

Shopnut,

Long time no....uh, talking to online!

Great to see your still in full swing over there. The joys of FL I'm sure. I could always FedEx some snow your way!

BTW the decorative window idea looks good. Breaks up that big plain area up top.

akdiesel - Glad you agree (because it's now complete!) and thanks for the confidence in my abilities. Unfortunately, it's going to end up being a boring door that doesn't do anything.

Red Leader - It has been a long time. Yes, this is a great time to do anything in Florida. You've been pretty quiet in the 1950s Garage. Hopefully that will change soon.

THE DECORATIVE DOOR IS UP PERMANANTLY…

I decided a temporary shelf would be the best way to tackle this job single-handed. Before the siding went on, I installed some Tee-nuts in the bottom of the truss beam so I didn't have to rely totally on wood screws to hold the shelf.

1711-Front-Loft-731.JPG

With it weighing about 70 pounds, I was happy to have the assistance of the manlift.

1712-Front-Loft-733.JPG

I spaced it 3" higher than the cardboard door and I think the placement now looks pretty good. Here are a couple final shots.

1713-Front-Loft-734.JPG 1714-Front-Loft-736.JPG

I was planning to do a whole lot more, but this work session was cut short with some bad news on the home front and I had to pack it up early.

ANOTHER SAD TIME AT THE ASYLUM…

Losing one of our dogs back in October was rough, but we still had Pekoe to focus our K9 attention to (Zoe's story in Reply #1588). And because he had been diagnosed with chronic kidney failure, he needed some additional attention. Pekoe has now passed on as well and we will miss him dearly.

1715-Pekoe-02.JPG

When his condition was first diagnosed, they said he may have months or years left. He ended up only having another 4 months, but they were very happy ones for all of us. Besides the kidney problem, he was very fit and had very few health problems during his life. It was a blessing having him around the extra months and we think he truly enjoyed the extra time together as much as we did. We walked 1 or 2 miles every day and he most often got to choose the direction we would go. He got to chase squirrels and a few deer too. Mostly, he got our undivided attention and that is what the little guy craved the most.

Pekoe basically stopped eating on the 23rd and was getting weaker with every day. We took him in to see the vet on the 26th and she prescribed an appetite enhancer to make the bland healthy food seem a bit more appealing to him. It worked that evening and he ate some stuff, so he seemed to be getting better. We walked him about 2 miles the next day and he was having a great time chasing squirrels again so I decided to head out to the Asylum later in the afternoon to do a few things.

On the 28th, Mrs. Shopnut called to say he had stopped eating again and was acting really strange. He was just going from room to room, standing and staring into space. She had a feeling he was not going to make it because she said she has seen it before where a dog will not lie down for fear of passing away.

She told me to come home so I could see him one last time and help her take him to the vet. She said she kept telling him daddy was coming to see him and she said his ears perked up when he heard the cycle pull up in the drive. When I walked in, he was still standing in the living room and basically collapsed when I got to his side. I put him up on the ottoman and that's where we all rested until the dreaded trip to the vet. Mrs. Shopnut believes he was just hanging on until I got home - I don't know if there is truth in that, but it sure seems believable at this point.

We're going to miss him. He was such a good boy. We spoiled him rotten (which is tough to do without any special treats) and he loved all the attention. Hopefully he is in a better place now - a place without leashes where he is actually allowed to catch a squirrel or two.

PEKOE (Nov 2001 - Dec 2012)
We were looking for a companion for Zoe after our schnauzer died and headed to the Humane Society - we were told he was someone's Christmas present, but the family decided they couldn't keep him. He was a black lab and chow mix. Here he is as a puppy not long after we brought the little guy home.

1716-Pekoe-Puppy-01.jpg

Here is big sister Zoe "showing him the ropes" :).

1717-Pekoe-Puppy-03.jpg 1718-Pekoe-Puppy-06.jpg

Of course, he was spoiled a bit too (maybe a lot ).

[1719-Pekoe-03.JPG

And he never missed a celebration (like when our recent pool renovation was finally complete - I think he is a bit tipsy here)

1720-Pekoe-04.JPG

When it came to working with me in the shop - it was always "safety first"! (I probably should have taken more safety tips from him! :))

So we enter into 2013 as "pet-less" people and have decided to give it a try for a few months to see how it suits us. After 23 years of always having at least two dogs in the house, things seem pretty strange right now and will take some getting use to.

I know for sure there is a truth in that, exactly the same thing happened to us with our previous dog Mickey.
He waited for hours until my wife came back from work, he was looking for her everywhere although he could barely walk.
She sat with him on the couch, he looked at her one more time and than closed his eyes.

I feel your grief and wish you lots of strength.

Hugo.

Vernmotor - Sorry for your loss. After twenty years, that must have been really tough. Honestly, I never knew cats could live that long. I suppose it’s a double-edged sword with pets that live longer life - you don’t have to say goodbye as often, but it’s probably even harder when the day eventually comes.

Sunbimmer - Thanks the kind words and for sharing your story. It supports my hunch. Perhaps their loyalty keeps them going somehow so they can say one last goodbye to their master. I just hope Pekoe (or your Mickey) wasn’t in too much pain waiting for me (or your wife) to get home. No one like to see them suffer.

Postsedan - Sorry to hear about your “Jax”. We miss them both dearly, but there is no stopping nature.

Red Leader - Thanks. Each day is getting easier. We are back to work now, and although that kind of ***** in itself, it helps to take our mind off of the personal stuff.

akdiesel - As the days go on, we are thinking less about the actual loss and more about the good old times we had together with Pekoe (and Zoe).

Omphaloskeptic - Thanks for stopping in on the sad occasions as well as the fun stuff. Yes, the trip back from the vet was bad. And the trip there was equally as bad with Pekoe lying on my lap losing his strength.

It took a day or so, but we’ve started to pack up all chew toys, bowls and bed. Most of Zoe’s stuff was still around in case Pekoe wanted it - but there is no use for any of it now. The only things still visible are the nose prints on the sliding glass doors (Mrs. Shopnut won’t let me wash them off yet) and some poop piles in the backyard - never thought a poop pile could make me sad (said partially in humor since I’m talking to a jokester).

jkherd - Thanks. As bad as we feel right now, I’m sure we will rescue several more before we are dead and buried.

JCQuick - Thanks for taking the time to write. The support on this forum is always a wonderful thing.

Next up... An updated task list for entering into the New Year. At this point, I need to look towards the future.

82_454 shorty - Thanks and sorry for your loss. Give that remaining basset hound something special for me tonight. Attention is what they really want most.

Pekoe seemed lost when Zoe passed, but we gave him so much attention that he got over it quickly. I still wondered what he was feeling when he was alone all day while we were off working. Hopefully he just slept and dreamed about chasing squirrels.

AN UPDATED TASK LIST TO RING IN THE NEW YEAR…

Happy New Year everyone!

There’s no better way to start a fresh year then by checking off what you have accomplished the prior year and figuring out where the heck you are headed in the upcoming one. (Well that, and maybe paying off those pesky holiday bills ;))

So here it is. You'll notice I've added a whole new section for the roll-up door covers which will be started after I wrap up the loft. I got a lot done in the last couple months of 2012 with an abundance of vacation being used, but I suspect things will slow down a bit in the first part of 2013 as I get back into my more normal routine (think snail-like pace ).

My deepest condolences on your loss. Pets just have a way of taking a hold of your heart and loving you unconditionally. There are no words that can ease the loss, but knowing he is not in any discomfort should help.

Godspeed, Pekoe!

BTW, thanks for continuing all the progress and hitting those milestones while I did honey-do's and entertaining family for the Holidays. Your progress puts me to shame on my lack thereof. (But I did get an impact wrench to help break loose some stubborn bolts.) Your A.L.F.I.E., grab bar, ceiling, front siding, decorative doors, a Merry Christmas and a tough start to the New Year that will most definitely get better... I'm tired just catching up on The Asylum...

Shopnut, your list shows it has been a very productive and satisfying year at the Asylum; congratulations! Looking forward to more 'couch camping' with my laptop in 2013 while you continue to bust your **** for the edification and enjoyment of your GJ audience.

hey buddy sorry about your loss. Pets are part of the family. Your to do list is awesome! I carry mine around on 4 or 5 index cards and about anything else I can write on. Some get done, some forgotten, some do not seem quite important later on and are given up for another project that currently seems more important. I think us garage guys are a little sick in one way or another but we know how to have a good time:D

Wingnut65 - Thanks for the kind words. We are slowly getting over it all. It has been a week and it’s definitely easier now. I think Mrs. Shopnut, although very sad yet, is relieved to not have to go through the anguish of getting him to eat his food every day. He always was a finicky eater from day one, but he really didn’t like his new diet. I know it was tough on her seeing him loose the weight.

I hope I can continue the momentum on the Asylum build going into 2013. We have some vacation plans in the near future so that will interfere a bit, but progress should still be made and I’m anxious to get back at it.

Don’t go too wild with that impact wrench and start taking off parts of the Lexus by accident :)

Omphaloskeptic - Be aware that the index is only updated through Reply #1711, so I have more work to do there as well :(.

I look forward to offering more entertainment to the GJ audience as I finish this place up in 2013 (said with great confidence :)). But keep the ideas coming, I’m not done yet!

KAP1978 - Thanks and sorry to hear about Matty. If Pekoe hadn’t have been diagnosed with his condition before Zoe passed, it’s likely we would have found him a new little buddy to spend time with during his remaining years. And then we would have had to find a second new one to accompany that first one after Pekoe passed. It can be a never-ending cycle (not that there’s anything wrong with it). The cycle has been broken now with these great friends passing so close together and we plan to take a short break. But I’m sure someday soon we will be rescuing a couple more - possibly summertime.

IGO2XS - Thanks. The list I post on GJ is just kind of an overview of what’s needed to finish this place. Before being discharged from the Asylum after a work session, I write up a little post-it note with all the little tasks that need to happen during the next visit. I find it helps tremendously; otherwise I get out there and ask myself “now where was I?” and drink three or four beers before figuring it out. By then I’m not worth much :). I also write down all the supplies that are needed for next visit because there’s no way I can keep all that in my head by the time I get to the store.
