It is finally time to share my new garage on the forum that started it all for me. I was alerted to this website around 18 months ago by a nice Swedish chap that follows me on Twitter - I had muted that I was looking for inspiration in creating a garage space that would be a contemporary design yet able to get planning permission in a leafy English village. A place that could house my two Porsches and offer the space I wanted to be able to tinker with my older car during the weekends... The two garages that offered that inspiration are the Milou garage in Switzerland and Jack Olsen's fabulous space in Los Angeles - and both builds were well documented on this very forum and Anders told me about them on here.

Now to my garage. The external appearance of the space had to be in-keeping with my home - a barn conversion. The planning department were always going to take a vested interest too, as my home is opposite a beautiful church dating back to the 14th Century. Luckily for me, the planning department liked the design and granted me planning permission in July 2012.

First we had to create a level area that would be able to take a garage with a 7.5m x 7.5m footprint plus an all-new driveway to access the garage... Then dig the footings, foundations and start the blockwork. I have hundreds of pictures, but here's a selection.

The concrete base for the floor was in by November. As you'll notice, the brickwork is low on one side and to the front. More of this later... ;)

The snow came and my contractor went away just after Christmas. In the end work resumed in March and it has been a fairly solid push to finish from then until just two-weeks ago when it was completed.

The second picture below shows the wood work. The main structural items used green oak.

And now to the finished item. The architect that made up the plans for me referred to the design as "more of a Porsche Pavilion than a garage." That name has kinda stuck.

The lights are LED throughout, with some in the floor that run the length of the driveway. These can all be operated from inside my home. And now you can see why some of the wall was low - 1m to the front and 3m to the side are glass. This means I can see inside from the house and I must confess to spending far too much time looking out and then eventually wandering out to have a little tinker. Often in pyjamas.

The glass is 12mm thick and actually reclaimed from an exhibition held at London Heathrow T5 - which means it is bomb-proof!

Security wise it is alarmed with sensors and HD cameras. Unfortunately, there are no doors yet. These were left off the original plans and I now have to re-apply for a planning amendment to get doors fitted. I'm in no rush, so these will be done by the Winter.

The floor is a nonporous resin stone that does not let oil through. A little Swarfega and some water lifts any oil drops to rinse away. Works very well and was a major deciding factor when choosing the floor. I also have a rubber system that I use for more involved work on my old 911 SWB.

These images show the asymmetric roof design and how the space looks at night. Thanks to Milou and Jack Olsen for inspiring this build. It's nearly midnight here in the UK, so I might just pop out for a few minutes... The wife shouldn't notice I'm gone, right? ;)

When I saw the other buildings in your neighborhood I was thinking your garage would be more of the same. Surprise! Surprise! Restrained but very up-to-date. Something I would expect from a classic Porsche owner.

Those footing excavations are much deeper than I would expect. Did you search diligently for old Roman gold coins? From the news I get the impression they are buried all over the place along with occasionally misplaced Saxon and Norman regent.

Thanks very much. The footing depth was requested by the planning dept. due to the fact that the soil behind was so much higher once we had levelled ours out. Agreed that it's a bit over the top. We found an old footing down there too, but only from an old farm building - luckily nothing of any notoriety otherwise construction would have been stopped for archialogical interest! And, being on my land, I would have had to pay for that...

Very very nice. I'd be a bit nervous about the lack of doors but it all depends on where you live,

My parents used to live in Newton Longville just outside Milton Keynes and I've still got family scattered around Buckinghamshire.

Thanks very much. Newton Longville is very close to me, though my village is considerably smaller. The doors will be going on, but my planning approval did not include those - this way the council gets another few hundred pounds off of me to re-apply. :(

Anders! I hope you saw that I credited you earlier?! Without you (and this forum), I wouldn't have been aware of the Milou garage/collection.

Here's a couple of pic's of the 911 SWB from yesterday...

Noted & appreciated!

The Porsche Pavilion has really turned out to be a really nicely designed "car crib" for your exquisite Porsche collection.

I really like the art that you have selected for the walls as well. Now we only have to specify a nicely selected toolbox for you.

There are quite a few "longhood" admirers along me and you on this forum, and I can´t wait for member Zeke to find this thread, as well as our world famous member/moderator Jack Olsen himself!

Thanks for sharing a couple of pics, and it has to be said (again) that State of Art decal really made the icing on the cake IMHO.

Cheers & Club Mulholland mate!

You've got great taste in cars and in buildings! The garage really turned out great. I love the recycled windows, the continuous flooring from the driveway into the garage and the overall aesthetic of the building itself. Well done.

Love the glass - perfect to see Stuttgart's finest without leaving the house! I've got planning permission for a triple garage near the house and was always thinking of doing the back wall in glass so I could see in from the house but I'm not sure it is a project I will ever get off the ground.

What are you planning on doing for the doors once the planning application goes through? Roller doors, up-and-overs, traditional style coach house doors?

Thanks - and thanks for noticing the continuous flooring! The flag-stones continue the same line with equally spaced LED uplighters too. At night, it looks really cool.

The glass makes the build in my opinion. If you can work it on your build, I would certainly recommend it... In terms of doors, I need to go with traditional coach house doors as that is all I will get planning for. They will also need to match my home for style, but that'll work well. Having them priced up now, so hopefully hey will be up in September once I have planning approval.

Very nice but I qas a bit shocked to read about the lack of doors on the original plans..

To be honest it is a mistake on my behalf. The drawings submitted did not have doors included, but it didn't even cross my mind that I would need to reapply just to fit doors! No harm done, they will be up before the weather turns.

Just wanted to say thanks for posting here! I had never heard of Magnus Walker (perhaps i have been living under a rock) and after seeing your signature decided to google him. I'm glad i did!!

The short Urban Outlaw is quite impressive and his collection is even more amazing.

So, congratulations on the beautiful garage and thanks for sharing!

Thank you! Have you seen the full version of Urban Outlaw? http://vimeo.com/44410797 Great film...

My car was initially built by ANDIAL and then Magnus Walker bought it and did his modifications... Now it's my turn.

Fantastic garage. I am very jealous of you great detail even with hanging the parking sign by covering the screw and the framed pictures. The wall color is nice to typically white is the color of choice. What color is that i think i might be repainting mine this weekend after seeing yours. Again great job.
