OK! Happy New Year (at least on the East coast); And the 2014 Garage-yard-Estate sale-Flea market-Pawn shop-CL finds thread is officially open for business!

For those that are new to the thread, this is our third year for this thread, originally started by (All Hail!) Jeff Moss in 2012, and continued by maddawg308 in 2013. This year it’s my turn to crank it up!

The basic philosophy is “One man’s junk is another man’s treasure!”

Essentially it’s for posting your finds of used or NOS tool, garage related or whatever interesting stuff you find in life’s travels for the rest of us to enjoy, discuss, and occasionally “curse” you for a “USUCK” find! :D (Please remember you cannot **** yourself on GJ it is simply not done…)

Feel free to tell the stories about the acquisitions, and most importantly post pics! We like pics on GJ!

We are pretty loose about where the stuff comes from, but there are other threads for when you buy new, the exception being NOS you might find outside the brick and mortar stores in general, and internet new product markets. Heck a few of us make trades and sales, and some of the second hand garage sale finds land here also!

So to launch at the stroke (or close to it, at least for you east coasters), I’ll quote one of my fav. Sigs:

“Your stuff is junk , and my junk is stuff!”

Ready,,, Set,,, GO!

Outlaw, Glad you are the OP for the new thread. Well deserving sir. My new years resolution is to contribute more to this thread. Since I checked the 2013 thread at least 5 times a day (love seeing what others find/buy), I figure that I should give back a bit. Good luck to all. May you spend little, and buy a lot!

Outlaw, you the man! Sweet pickings everyone! I firmly believe in the credo Outlaw said... "one man's junk is another man's treasure!" I really enjoy looking for that rusty gold (long before there was a TV reality show). And it seems that haggling or horse-trading is becoming a lost art. I hope the younger generation learn to appreciate the art of the deal.

Hope we all find those tool bargains and treasures in the good ole' garage sale! Half of the fun is the hunt, ya know!

Ok I braved the cold for my first garage sale of 2014 and came away with a few items. $!0 total, the pipe threader has some surface rust but will clean up nice. Thats the second one I got in two weeks.
Happy new year to all.

I spent a lot of time lurking in the 2013 thread and really enjoyed seeing the finds some of you scored. My sole resolution for 2014 is to be a more active participant, ie find some deals of my own!

Beatcad,
Use that China vise for welding projects and save your good one for other things. No harm no foul if it gets beat/burned up.
Cheers,
JimDon

:headscrat Not going to lie, I had to read that 3 times to make sure I got it straight. :willy_nil

I guess the more important question. What type of slim jims are we talking here?

I fixed it. I should've put a period between the word MOVE and THE.
guess I was in a rush.

yes I do have a couple slim jims(the kind for getting into locked cars) and a decent lockout kit.

my wife often buys me a box of slim jim snack sticks to geep in the garage for a quick snack.
come to think of it, my buddy said he wanted a slim jim each, but I think he only ate one.

O no, you're fine I was just ribbing ya. It just reminded me of one of those "My sister's uncle's wife's neighbor's daughter......" I didn't even think of the slim jim tool, was only thinking of the "food".

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!!

I went out to a garage sale today for no better reason that it's the first day of 2014 and came up with this nifty cabinet. Just what a disorganized garage like mine needs. $30 seemed a good deal to me.

Maybe it's stretching the definition just a bit - this sale turned out to be at an auction house, but it was stuff from a garage, and stuff to go in a garage!

Sweet cabinet !

I've been looking, but there is nothing that looks interesting around here this time of year. It'll be fairly dry pickings until spring, I guess.

Looks Like a good start to 2014. Best of luck to everyone and dont forget to bring your flash light. I found the sprayer in a dark conner of the the basement at the sale.
Took the pipe threader apart and cleaned it.

This is one of many reasons I carry a single AA, single LED Dorcy in my pocket at all timers. I also carry a 4" (Vintage) crescent, a 3' tape, a small folding magnifier, (damn over 45 YO eyes...) as well as the usual pocket knife. The tape and magnifier are small enough to fit in my jean's watch pocket, and be unnoticed.

Found a 3/4 HP Baldor 332B buffer on craigslist. It is in great shape and included 6 bars of compound. I'll have to buy some new pads for it and am looking for a stand. I paid more that I wanted but I've been looking for one for almost half a year and price was reasonable. Total was $150.

Luckily there is a good supplier not too far away - Lehigh valley abrasives in whitehouse.

When I have to accompany my wife to Ikea I always take one of their 1 meter (39.37") paper tapes. They are graduated in centimeters on one side and inches on the other. I have these scattered in various coats and other places. They don't take up any room and are disposable. They hold up suprisingly well. And the price is right!

I have carried a set of 3" pocket slide calipers every day for 20 years. I use them often. They measure up to 2" and have a 3" scale on the back graduated in 32nds of an inch. I find that I can be accurate to .005" by interpolating between the graduations. Good brands are Starrett, Lufkin, and Tumico, all of which can be purchased off ebay for very little $. I keep mine in the watch pocket of my jeans.

While I wouldn't be happy spending $150 (I'm cheap), that Baldor was a great find. I know how hard they can be to find at a good price. I think you did well. Good score.

Matt, that may not have been a steal of a deal, it was still a good deal for certain!

I hoped to get it for $120, but it is tough to negotiate over email. If I went in person I'm sure he would have accepted it. I was debating driving to Brooklyn to pick it up and negotiate in person, but he was close to a co-worker of mine who offered to pick it up for me and bring it to the office a few days later. It was worth paying a bit extra to avoid the tunnel and the traffic.

He has several other folks interested in the buffer. I just happened to be the first.

I like to bring a small magnet with me as well to test metal. Plus some basic tools such as a small hammer, a screwdriver and a pliers are handy when you have to take something apart (such as remove a vise from a workbench). And I now always have rope or bungee cords with me in case I have to tie anything to the roof.

So, no pics, but I got a Kennedy 4' shelf unit from my buddy. Two shelves, 4' wide, 3' tall... He snagged it from his old work (dorman) and set it up in our old garage that we just moved out of. He didn't want it, so I brought it home.

I also keep a small disc magnet stuck to the 4" Crescent! (great minds...) my nail clippers wound up stuck there early on, so that has become the std carry for those three...

I keep a few tools in the car and have used those to free a couple of vises and he like at times... (Mostly at Estate sales)

Auctions and estate sales, I now come equipped with a full tool box and my own fat tire hand truck. Got to remember to put the board for a loading ramp back in my Expedition.

Really cheesed off the guy with the loader for rent when I disassembled a floor drill press and took it out in pieces. He glared at me every trip I took. I was going to clean the rust off in the driveway before I took it down the steps into the basement anyway.

I rarely have time to go to garage sales anymore, but didn't know Craigslist and auctions qualified for this thread. Craigslist is my version of a garage sale with a purpose. there is usually something there you are definitely looking for and you might find other items. since I needed a few tools to fill up a couple drawers on a new (old school) toolbox that I agreed to buy I found some calling my name along with a vise. i'll take them out of the box and show them off later today when I get some time.

$75 for Waterloo machinist tool box

How about $20 for this old US made vise?

$40 for this box of tools and stuff

Happy 2014 to everyone
