I posted this back in the wintertime when I picked it up for $60. It's an older Craftsman model 100 tabletop drill press. Needs a rewiring, and some rust removal and paint, otherwise complete. Hope to get to this press sometime this summer.

Here's mine, his name is Ed. He's a new arrival from about a month ago.

It's badass I thoroughly enjoy it. Back gear, derailleur to switch speeds, sliding head, counterweights, around 1500lbs of pure glory. I'd like to restore it, but it isn't as simple as restoring a normal drill press. Weight becomes an issue, as does getting a lot of it apart. The static converter is temporary. Ill wire my VFD in when I get a box and some remote controls for it.

Of course the picture has to be rotated.. Posting from my phone, sorry guys.

Old Drill Press HELP!

So i picked up a gorgeous late 40's Homecraft Drill Press for $100. Got it home and couldn't get this floor model to stand up without tipping. Took it apart only to find that the post was 7' of SOLID BRASS and weighed 75lbs! Gee that's an issue.

I dismantled everything and now I'm looking for a new 1.875" OD post, problem is there isn't a lot around in that diameter. Schedule 40 pipe is 1.9", too big. I did find a supplier online and locally that can get me 1.875 OD DOM but it is only .25 wall thickness (oh and it costs $152.00 for 7')! So besides the LOUSY price, is .25 heavy enough for a floor unit or should I just put this drill back to a table mount which is how I think it started out?

Your expertise is appreciated.

Joe, .25 wall is WAY heavier than needed. You should be fine with .150 - .187 or so .125 would be a bit on the light side for a floor stander.

and scrap value alone of the brass should pay for the new post...

Well, scrap value was $87.00. The big problem is finding the material in 1.875 diameter. But I appreciate your feedback, you saved me some major $$.

Joe, that's an awful light duty press to be a floor stander, may be better off converting it back to a bench model. Bench column should be easier to come by. Now that I think about it, I may even have one if the small Atlas/Craftsman bench top uses the same size.

Ritz:i think you've made us wait long enough before asking for another picture of that awesome DP you own that maybe isn't sideways and a partial picture. post away young man that is a beast and in case you hadn't noticed i like DP's and Grinders almost as much as vises. or just "old" tools in general. we want more tool ****. PLEASE!!!

I'll post my new Walker Turner bench top DP as soon as i clear off a spot on my bench to take some pictures. it is all original and even has the original Walker Turner rubber belt on it still. i do like the oiler the sticks out of the top like a unicorn too.

454, If the Atlas craftsman is the same as mine, its 2-1/4'

Joe post a pic of the Homecraft; that IS a super lightweight unit if its the one I'm thinking of, and .120 wall may be just fine if so...

Actually just came in from the shop and it is 1-3/4" SOLID rod, unfortunately it's steel, not brass like Joes. Very small (11" swing maybe?), but surprisingly heavy. Unfortunately it is missing the return spring and housing, which seem to be pretty tough to come by. I could probably turn a housing on the lathe, and adapt or fab a spring, but I have too many projects going to get involved with a $50.00 drill press I don't need. So probably end up parting it out.

Can't wait to see the walker turner

I just picked up two of them recently. They are great machines

I have attached a pic hopefully I will get time to refinish them one day.

My other one doesn't have the third pulley and came with a 1/6 hp motor

The one pictured has on original WT 1/2 hp driver motor

I also have a vintage craftsman floor press I got cheap and an old craftsman/ atlas bench top one with the third pulley. Instead of getting the vise addiction I have the drill press addiction
The stand up one is set up for wood; another is for mortising. One for metal...you get the idea

Have less than 350 in all of them..these pics may be posted in other threads

I'd love to post a pic, but it will have to wait til i reassemble it. In the interim here's a pic of a similar one. Mine has a 1/2" Jacobs chuck, 1/3 hp motor, pretty light but fine for what i do with it. after all your posts I am going to build it back into the tabletop model it started as. Probably go with the .25 wall thickness tubing just because that's what i can get...

Yep, Joe I'm pretty sure that one also was available with a different hinged base, and was intended to be a part of a single stand that had a small T saw, an 4" joiner/planer, and the DP all using one power source. I have the T saw and the Joiner, (bought a decade apart) but not the stand or DP.

For bench-top use, the .120 or .125 wall will do you fine.

Some very impressive drill presses on this thread - I loved that big red floor standing one in post #130

I didn't see any like the one I picked up...

Thanks nine4, I didn't expect anyone from your side of the planet to be viewing at this time of the evening/night (when it's 12.30am there, it's 4.30pm here).

I forgot to mention that I got it (about a year ago) for free! :D

...and it works - I actually use it quite often to drill pilot holes, it saves constantly having to change to different sized drills in my other one.

It was actually 1:30 am here(central time) but I'm a night person. I can get a lot done when there is no one to bother me.

You ****!! That's a compliment for the free drill press, never heard of the brand but it looks well made.

Haha, thanks (for my 1st "you ****")

I'd never heard of the brand either - I'm guessing it's of Australian origin, I tried googling it when I got it, but couldn't find any info. :headscrat

The manual I have shows similar usage. Mine could be setup as a router, shaper, sander. Do you have the manual? If not I have a pdf of the entire thing.

Yeah so I'm off to spend 70 bucks for tubing, man does that frost my ****! local shop wants $75 and I'd have to drive 1/2 hour. 70 gets it delivered to my door. I did find a piece of .125 locally BUT it was 15' long, they wouldn't cut it and it was $95 bucks.

Thanks again everyone for the input. I'll get a pick up soon, now if I can only snag a Parker vise I saw advertised locally I'll be a happy camper, but that's a different thread isn't it!

Might post a WTB on OWWM, in the BOYD section for a column. Can't believe someone doesn't have a column hanging around for cheap.

If I had ANY patience that's what I'd do, but I want this done for this Saturday so there you go.

In the end I made out OK since I'm turning it back into a table top model.

I decided to make a quick video showing my drilling machine, I hope those interested (D) enjoy.

Sorry the video *****. I now know it's better to take short clips than one long one with the software on my phone.. So I can't edit out me moving the camera and whatnot. But it still beats crooked pictures.

That video reminds me I want something driven by flat belt, just for the sound.

The flat belt is only part of it. If you really want the complete nostalgia thing, you need the motive source too. :D

One of the few American pieces I have knocking about. I like horizontal, open crank machines. That's been stood here for a while now, in preparation for the day I eventually get a lineshaft system together, (not much chance in the current shed, with only a 6' ceiling :D). It was restored by the previous owner, not I, might I add.
