I have been looking for a CM mid-section box for some time.

This 3-piece stack came home from an Estate Sale a couple of days ago.

They would not separate the 'set', so what else could I do?;)

The tool boxes contained these socket organizers and 2 medium size USPS boxes over flowing with misc. small tools, including several Crown Top Craftsman tools.

Mrs. Torqueman is out of town, so the boxes are staged in the front hall. Please don't tell. :p

Those are fabulous. They look to be in great shape. I really like the all-drawer roller. Lots of storage here.

Out of curiosity, what's the total height?

A guy at the local flea market has had this set for sale for 3 weeks now. He didn't know what it was, so of course I had to bend his ear about it until his eyes glazed over.

It's a Waterloo set branded as "All American". Waterloo only used that brand for a few years in the early to mid 70's (my original source was Outlawmws). The brand was also used on carry boxes and was intended to sell to the homeowner. I don't know what stores they were sold in though. Possibly autoparts stores, or department stores. :dunno: I've seen some of the boxes in red as well. These are both stamped 1972 and have the flat handles rather than the later rounded handles that are on my 1974 box.

This week I finally remembered to bring my camera with me to the FM, and he allowed me to take a picture of the paper decals. Eventually I hope to duplicate the label for the top box that's sitting unused in my shop.

(I still haven't remembered to ask him how much he's asking) :lol_hitti

I figured that I'd document them here since there is very little about this brand on the internet. (none at all, except a few posts here on GJ)

Jake, that is the exact set I had years back as an auxiliary box, (overflow from my main box). I sold that to the guy across the street at a garage sale, (2 drawers each? Near useless to me as the tools grew...)

I've seen it or one identical to it (I'm positive it was mine as he got rid of it a few years later, this guy puts more perfectly good stuff to the curb that anyone on the planet...) at the local flea market for a few weeks. It had some of the same wear and tear marks is why I was so positive it was mine...

Its actually a very decent box construction-wise, just not much capacity...

It maybe a while.
These are headed to the basement and are the big brother to my 2-piece set already there, after being replace by a minty Snap On set for the shop/garage.
I don't really have a need for them, but estate seller wouldn't separate. What's a guy to do? :dunno:
Basement set I made a living out of in the 70's.

DOC: easy answer. BUY THEM. nice looking boxes and fill them up or just keep them until you decide where they belong. i know you are planning on buying a nice piece of property to build a 40 x 120 shop and just waiting for the right moment to tell Mrs. TM.

i like the labeling on the drawers too.

cheers

I checked my waterloo box dated '74 as well as my grey and red craftsman box dated '72. They both use the short clips. The clips I need are the long clips. They physically look similar but are longer. I tried using the small clips on my dad's box slides and they did not work because they where to short. I was hoping someone had some? This box I need clips for should be a '78 or '79...

So I was at my parents this weekend and took some pictures of my dad's box that needs 6 of the push in clips. They are 3" long and clip on one end and push into the slot on the other end. Let me know if you have some for sale!

The box that has the clips-it is the upper box. It has a date of 03 of 77 in the upper tray

Call Waterloo who is the manufacturer of the box (I'm pretty sure). They can send you the right length clips and you'll be on your way. :rocker:

Any info whether or not this was a item sold by Craftsmans by itself or do they come in a tool box. It measures 9 by 19

Taumac: i know i have been MIA from this thread for a while, but that didn't mean i wasn't still buying old tool boxes and tools. i can honestly say i have not seen one of those and i'm pretty sure i live in one of the Craftsman old tool capitals of the USA.

nice find and looks like even a hand grinder would carry nicely in that tray.

Thanks drive. I think I saw one a while back but it was different. Here's the thread

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=219694

It's different then one I got but this the only other I've seen. I don't see a stamp on it but it's hasn't been cleaned up yet.

Outlaw & Jake,

Nice toolboxes in great condition.

The label is in fine shape too; even if it's a little funny: "Strong Spacious".
;)

1972 was well before "Truth in Advertising".

For those times and target market, not so far off. While it was in no way enough for me, my Dad with two carry boxes before the divorce, would have thought he'd died and gone to heaven...

This is an interesting setup. Issue for me is that it's in one of those "can't get there from here" locations. At least a 2 1/2 hour drive, but probably only 45 minutes from me as the crow flies! I'd be interested in hearing thoughts on a value for the setup? CL Link

They were throwing out this little box at work a few months back, took it into my office and I just found it hiding in my filing cabinet, guess I forgot to take it home hah.

At first I tought it was an actual tool box of some sort which I figured had been used for storing cross country ski wax supplies because I've seen 2 or 3 other carry boxes used to that effect around the building (university sports complex) but turns out that it's this:

http://www.prodigy-sports.com/Qstore/Qstore.cgi?CMD=011&PROD=1138744479

Which makes just as much sense given the location. It was given a pretty bad repaint some years back, but that doesn't matter. I'm thinking I might turn it into a box for my car somewhere down the line as it's pretty solidly built.

That was the solution back in the day if you wanted a larger than 33" box. They sold a kit so you could attach two 27" (what those are) or two 33" boxes into one long box. I'm not a fan of the twin drawer pull boxes personally. I think that is way high for the set, for what they are. Problem being, once you get past the ~$700 the options really open up into much more modern boxes.

I seem to recall someone on a jeep forum turning an old gas can into a boom box. They opened up the side, put in some hinges, installed a car radio and a small 12 VDC battery with a couple of speakers. It was pretty cool.

Smoke, I hope someone here can help you with these. At least we now know that this clip changed between 03-77 and 08-78, because I have that exact same chest but the clips are as pictured (bottom) in post #4608.

I think generally that rule is true but there is some variance. I have a silver/red craftsman upper from '74 that has the small clips and I have an intermediate red/silver box that is a 2 drawer that has the long point clips like this one does (don't know how old it is because I can't see the date). There was some differences in the boxes??

Is this an MBC or a SnapOn box ??????

It's 12"x26". When I found it, it was sitting on an MBC roller with similar drawer pulls.
The SnapOn stickers are throwing me off and there are no stampings anywhere on the box. I figured for $25 bux I wouldn't be loosing out (the roller was in worse shape for $40, I passed). It's going to take quite a while to degrease and clean it up. A hammer might be involved. ;)

This thing weighs a ton. The key was included.

the side handles and the slides look MBC.
the drawer pulls and the top/front lid handle do look like snap-on.
but i have seen boxes w/ these drawer pulls that were not snap-on/MBC.

look on the left side panel of the box. left from facing the box.
IF it's MBC or SO it will be stamped in the lower left corner there.
i may be lightly stamped or dirty or painted over, so you might need a flashlight and a magnifying glass.
if its there it'll have the brand and date.
i'm guessing mid 60s to 70s..although i did have a early 80s SO w/ that style dtawer pulls.
