got 4 packages waiting for me when I get home.

who makes the Gator Grip ratchet? That thing is USA isn't it?

Edit: nvm, from what I can see on the package, it's just the socket made in usa
"Ratcheting wrench made in Taiwan"

winlinmac:
re: Craftsman branded ratcheting box end wrenches:

Those laminated-type wrenches are ubiquitous in the tool world. Of those made in the US, 99.9% of them are manufactured by Kastar (now Lang), who has made them forever for all kinds of manufacturers (including, but not limited to Craftsman and the "truck" brands.)
Take a look at the patent numbers stamped on them.
Only time you'll see me post any here is if they're a screaming deal and they have the offset heads.

The flat ones, both the Kastar-made and the the big war-club models built by Indestro (sample HERE: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-IND...091799?hash=item25bb797f57:g:3LgAAOSw5IJWeeTr ) are actually not worth a **** in the real-life world.
I should note as well: if it looks like that Indestro, but has a different name stamped on it (i.e., Craftsman), it was manufactured by Indestro (as above, refer to the patent numbers stamped on the piece.)

I own exactly ONE of them - a little 1/4" x 5/16" model Kastar, which is probably something left over as a sample when I was an independent agent representing Kastar in the late 1980s. I don't believe I've ever used it.

Despite the overwhelming majority opinion being that both types are effectively useless due to clearance issues, there have been millions of them sold that are out there in the secondary marketplace.
For some odd reason, Ebay sellers seem to have been deluded into thinking that they are in some way "rare" or "collectible" or have some high dollar value.

I should note also that when I was selling them - we carried both types in Indestro and Kastar in our stores and the warehouse - the newer-type ratcheting box-end wrenches that you see today manufactured by GearWrench, Blackhawk, and others were not yet out in the market. That notwithstanding, the Indestro models didn't sell worth a damn - you couldn't give the things away. Inexplicably, the Kastar sets seemed to sell pretty well, but I think they were purchased as gifts - kind of like the schlock "wonder tools" that Craftsman comes out with every year before Christmas; useless **** that people think would make a good "gift" for hubby. The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

If and when I ever get around to picking through everything here and sorting out keepers from tossers, guess which pile that one I own will go into? ;)

Was missing a 20mm 6-pt Deep Socket, eventually got it but was not impressed. My metric sockets are complete though, and paid for $4 for an imported socket instead of $14. It's a socket rarely used, so no need for me to go haywire,

Just realized that Wright's nutdrivers are made by Pratt-Read. I already have a Craftsman set, but I see listings for the Wright brand all over eBay.

The two ratchets I want to try now are William's Superratchet(s) and Wright's Double-Pawl Ratchet (3/8 or 1/2).

I also need a 7/16.. over $20??? screw that, i'll wait.

What's awkward is that this Gearwrench 20mm deep socket is smaller than a 19mm 3/8 Proto deep socket and my OCD is kicking in now, but for $4, can't really complain

If and when I ever get around to picking through everything here and sorting out keepers from tossers, guess which pile that one I own will go into? ;)

4C am I right in reading the above that you don't really like these much? :lol_hitti

I actually don't mind the offset ones. And I've used the flat ones plenty too. On modern cars, not so much room to use these, but on other things where there is room, they are fine. I never saw the Indestro version till your picture of it. Yeah, I can see how that bulk would be an issue there. The Kastar and variants are a lot thinner. You can still buy new the Kastar variants in quite a few brands like Proto. There are people that like these OK. I have to admit I like my flex end Gearwrench racheting alot more. :eyecrazy: BUT I like my "Saltus" type flex end alot too! I need Metric in Saltus if you ever find any good auctions for those cheapo. - Paul

Those are same as SK and top notch. You will like them alot. Also, the SK box they come in is handy. I like to fine just boxes in SK when I can for other sets as they are more readily available and usually cheaper than other brands of boxes. 4C is on top of this as he's listed lots of empty SK boxes. - Paul

Are the Kraeuter sockets made by SK? They look exactly the same with the exception of the text and the knurled ring round them. I was looking at the machining of the top and insides, they look identical.

I guess I just don't know anything about Kraeuter.

I bought that exact same set still shrink wrapped inside the metal box. About half the sockets were marked Kraeuter and the other half were marked SK.

Yes, very same just different text. Kraeuter was SK's attempt to make another tool line back in the 70's. Now, MOST Kraeuter was same as SK. They made rachets, sockets, even the little thumb rachets in Kraeuter form back then. Now at the very very end, they did at least one thing partially foreign. The same seller had a Japan starter set in 1/4" format that was under the Kreauter name. But other than that set, all else I've ever seen Kraeuter was same as SK, made on same production lines, in USA. Nobody thinks about Kreauter so sometimes you can find that cheaper than the same in proper SK name. SK also made most of the JC PENNY namebrand sets (note different than Penncraft), and some other brands too.

By the way Spin, how do you like those Herbrand 1/4" breaker bars? I and 4C think those are real nice and surely USA made. - Paul

Was missing a 20mm QUOTE]

In 36 years of wrenching I had never used a 20mm anything until I recently did a build on the new model Chrysler Pacifica van. The eccentric nut for the rear lower control arm uses that size.

And the only reason I even owned that size is because of my OCD and those freaking Hansen trays. Had I never bought then damn things for the socket collection, I doubt I'd even own that size socket.

WTF?!. :lol_hitti

Here's a question... wtf is a 6.5mm and 7.5mm socket for?

I've seen plenty of 4.5 and 5.5 sockets (don't know what they're for either), but I have a 6.5 and 7.5, and never see these sizes for sale anywhere. I bet they're just "metric equivalents"...

Ya the 4.5 and 5.5 have been a long standing WTF. But I've used both many times for whatever reason.

So now you're telling me I need a 6.5 and 7.5 too!. :eyecrazy:
