Has anyone ever created a storage space between the ceiling and garage doors? I was looking at mine the other day and was wondering....

Anyone have any ideas and comments??

I have done it by hanging platform shelving from the joists above.
I screwed perforated angle horizontally into joists, going across about six of them, then from the two rows of angle I hung vertical angle, bolted to the crossways angles, and those were screwed into the sides of flat shelves built of 2x4 frames with plywood tops.
I had it about 2" above the highest part of the door when it was up. On the side with an opener, it had to be higher to clear the shaft of the opener.

in a previous house I had almost 2 ft space over the garage door when it was open. I made a framework of 2x4s that hung from the rafters.
I used these to store my lumber, ladders, and some misc stuff

Otherwise wasted space. Why not? Of course you get more room with sectional doors. You can even have the tracks changed to low ceiling tracks for additional shelf height (lower shelf).

Yep, just built a shelf over my garage. It doesn't give me much but every little bit helps. Gave me another 2' by 16' though it's not much hight wise in the back the slope of the roof quickly rises so it works fine.

I only had about 13 inches (insert your favorite punch line here!) for height. 16 feet by 2 feet. If I were to do it again, I would go for 3 to 4 feet in depth. I made a base frame of 2x4's and covered it with plywood. I used decking screws that cut through the wood and into the garage framing, with no drilling of starter holes required! I used 2x2's hanging from angle straps, 2 for every 8'.

A cheap project that cleared a good amount of floor space.

You can guy racks that are designed to be hung up there....kind of pricy.....but they are strong and hold a lot.

It is an excelent way to store stuff...

I only have '6 inches'.....so one must make due with what they have....

Here's mine. At some point in the garage's history, it was lengthened -- so I had a beam to hang shelves off of (they're also tied into the ceiling joists). Ahead of the beam the ceiling was higher, and I put up a kind of rack system on that side for storing long stock. The long stuff is on the left, in this picture. On the right side is some straightforward shelving with about 16" of clearance.

I could have put more in, but I wanted to be able to reach the stuff I stored up there, and I also didn't want to lower too much of the ceiling -- it's a pretty small garage.

what type of u shaped hangers are they using on the ceiling? also, are they using 2x4's for the entire floor?

I beleive they are using uni-strut along the ceiling and underneath the 2x4 along the outside span. It does look like they are using 2x4's. I would probably use 2x6 for added strength.

Cool Ideas!! I guess I may have to do that to at least one of my garage doors, it may have to wait until winter...

Here is mine with a hoist that runs on a track so that I can hoist things up and then push the item (race kart) in the loft area.

My current attached garage has a 7 foot high door with 9 foot celing.
In my mind not enough room for shelves or a platform.

But I have ladders hanging from hooks, long pool tools on a simple rack, and knock down clothes racks the wife uses for her garage sales on ladder racks that are screwed to the door header.

Glad you posted these Hobie1dog - you did it right!

Do a search on it - there's been quite a few threads about this type of storage solution. Lots of good one right here too!

I know that go-kart lift uses a track for a large sliding "barn door" but I don't know what the real name is. I've been searching Lowes.com trying to find one but no luck...the electric hoist I'll use is from HF.

I don't have but 6" above the garage door when its up. I can HARDLY pick up a 8 foot board when its leaning against the wall :(

What ***** more - I have an A frame above the whole thing, they just opted for more attic storage space there.

I think in the 8-12 year range, I might tear down the attic and ceiling and open things up a bit more.
