RED: happy to hear that another member likes this thread and it's one of my favorite ones too. aside from the fact that i love everything in your picture can you open up a few of the drawers on your like new vintage Equipto? AWESOME FIND and it looks great with all the rest of your cabinets too.

are the 3 white 8 drawer cabinets on some sort of dolley or cart? any more pictures of them with drawers open and of the cart would be great if you have time.

thanks for stopping in and also for adding some more metal cabinet **** to the thread.

2000: i've yet to see one like that in person and looks very handy. NICE FIND!! looks a little like Equipto, but could be a number of makers using that style.

Teen: pretty sure that is a KENNEDY machinist toolbox and your little brother is getting a good start especially with a bigger brother that loves and likes to buy old tools. and knows how to use them. this thread is mainly for those metal cabinets and toolboxes that don't have familiar brand names, but thanks for stopping by and i'm sure you'll post more later as you find and buy some.

Oh I read title as vintage metal cabinets and no name. Oh I posted months ago a cantilever if anyone remembers and never checked back to say it is my moms Kennedy.

TEEN: NO WORRIES. glad you like tools and using them. so keep posting and helping and asking questions as you need or have time to.

lots of cantelever boxes have no names on them and as much as they hold no wonder our grand dads and great grand dads were so strong.

I'll see about posting a few more pictures of the Equipto for you, drives. As for the cabinets on the dolly/cart, that's a failed experiment as far as I'm concerned.

The casters I used are plenty sturdy, but I used them because I got them cheap - and none of them lock! :-/ With as much weight as I've got in the cabinets, it's actually a little frightening when the thing starts a'rollin'!

...and with as much weight as I have in those cabinets, even the doubled 3/4" birch ply isn't up to the task! I've got some sag in the middle... Boo! Back to the drawing board. A welded subplatform is probably in order, but that's beyond my abilities.

Here's the best (pre-sag) picture I have of the cabinets right now, even though it's really a pic of my bandsaw!

Red: i need to grab a current picture of my 10 drawer units, but i agree they can hold a ton so maybe casters isn't a great idea for me to even think of.

sure post up more pictures of your Equipto and how you fill it up and more of your white and other cabinets too when you have time. also who here doesn't like old bandsaw pictures?

thanks

BTW in case you want some ideas about Organizing or want to share some of yours i started a thread over in Garage gallery called Organizing 201 and here's the link.

The box is neat, it's just so long. It's 35 inches long and must weight 45 pounds empty. It's so well built I'm thinking I could park a car on it and not damage it. I didn't even haggle with the seller at the sale.

I'm not even halfway through this thread, and it's already one of my favorites!

I was lucky to win this beautiful Equipto cabinet at an auction a few weeks back... it's a real beaut, and even came with a few odd bits 'n pieces in it!

The lamp and the Equipto bench cabinet came from the same auction, with the bullet vise.

The check filing cabinets to the right were cast-offs from work. Love love love those things!

Old metal cabs are great for storage. Two of these pictured brown file cabs were left in my garage when I bought the place. I'm just getting around to renovating the garages, and plan to paint them black and attach aluminum trim to match my toolbox...also installing body guards on that right now.

Those big print files make great toolboxes if you have plenty of space...

space is why i'm not keeping it. this should work great in my son's basement.

Dean: those should be awesome when you finish the plan you have for them. i've got several that size and mine are made by Mayline and Hamilton. your handles are a bit different so any chance you might have a brand name on yours to mention?

nice find and post up the progress and finished pictures when you have time.

no brand name that i have found yet. i will post pictures of the progress and the finish.

A friend of mine has a nice workbench/table with safe deposit boxes underneath for storing part of his lock collection. He is out of town until spring but I will get some pictures when I see him again!

Hi, garage folks, I am way far behind on the vise page ( but have serious vice for vises!) If you know tool boxes like the vise guys know vises than someone will make this look easy. It has been anything but for me.Today I have a question that I only know how to ask, probably. I am looking for a box like this one. I believe it is from the 40,maybe 50's. might be made by blackhawk box? IDK any help that can point me on to one like this would be greatly appreciation. It does not have to be labeled as a Briggs box,,just the right box and drawers arrangement. I can also be reached at [email protected] Hi I moved this cause it was suggested I had it in the wrong place. Anyone help? There is alot to learn about getting around garage Journal.
ok Just read all back pages and got caught up,,,see that there are more big cabinets than little boxes, but they are here. thanks in advance.

Mark: what size is the metal cabinet you are looking for? here's one i found with 3 drawers with lots of dividers inside the drawers.

i can't say i've ever seen a smallish cabinet with Briggs Stratton label on it, but i've seen several cabinets that are similar in design so enjoy the hunt.

drivesitfar : Thats a very good question on drawer size,,,I have not seen this one in person. Maybe we can figure out an estimate of rough dimensions of the box based on drawer pulls and what others have seen in person and can measure? I am guessing in between 10 and 12 high,,and 13 -15 wide ,,no idea how deep but there must be a " standard" for this size ? Thats why I came to the people who pay attention to this kind of thing. That original equipment one of yours is awsome with all the small divided sections!!. Thanks

Dean: your cabinet workbench build is coming along nicely and hope you have time to post up a few pictures over here when you are finished. also want to hear what your son has to say when he sees it knowing that you made it for him.

ALL: you might say i have a love for metal cabinets, benches and maybe old steel and cast iron so here's another project i found. it was made by a local company here in the PNW and i'll try to find out more about them and what the bench was used for as i have time to. it has a hole on the top with a hole drilled that might have been after the tool or machine was removed. there is another hole in the bottom so guessing the two holes were for power cord, but not certain.

i'm guessing this bench weighs close to 250-300 pounds and the drawer slides are small stout C channel sliding inside each other. with it being painted Army green i'm guessing government issue or maybe for Boeing that liked to have that style in their shops. or maybe it had a specific use for a specific tool? the bench dimensions are 6 foot wide, 3 feet deep and 3 feet tall or close to that.

JUST AN FYI: i tipped the bench upside down after taking out the drawers and putting them inside my Honda and on the 15 minute drive home one of the door's pins popped out and the door fell out and wedged in the gap between the wheel well and the cabinet so i didn't lose it. the pins were also there laying on the bed of my trailer too and luckily no damage to the door and it went back on and works great. who would have thought almost a 80 year old metal cabinet's hinge pins would be loose. i'll tape them next time if i choose this method which works pretty well since i load and unload these heavy benches by myself.

FJ: I hate to waste a good steel bench top, but i think this old SHIP HATCH might look pretty good on it. thoughts?

also on top of the ship hatch i was thinking of putting this vise and DP?

it's headed for my shed/woodshop so the bench top wouldn't need to be steel, but you are right i do like the look.

thanks

Great choice. I think the hatch makes a nice compliment. I found a Prentiss like yours this Summer. Very stout.

OUTLAW: good question. bench is 36 deep and Ship hatch is i think 27 so i'll have to fit in a piece of 2 inch cedar or old growth i have around here unless you or others have a better idea?

or maybe i could mill off a 2 inch board off of this old Timber i picked up?

Scrounge another hatch cover; maybe a broken one, and scarf off 10" or so off that, set it up with a third piece as a back splash too.

OUTLAW: not a bad idea, but these Ship Hatches don't come up often or cheap. I do own 3 of them though that i've dug up recently and my bride is saying she wants me to make a picnic table and maybe a table for inside the house so i'll keep you posted.

the bench will be in my shed so not one of my main ones and won't be seen by anybody but me more than likely until we move.

here's the other two ship hatches in case you want to ponder a bit more.

thanks

FJ: was the pin on your Prentiss 19.5 stuck and did the person even know it was a swivel jaw vise? good find and i love these old Prentiss vises that weren't beat to ****. Just for kicks on your next post on this thread how about also posting up that cool old Snappy you restored a couple years ago?

Wow, you guys come across some nice metal cabinets. This about the only thing I found in my area that was decent (but needs paint). Thinking about grabbing it today. They're small, but only around $15, and they are metal. I have some nuts, bolts and washers I could store in them.

Per your request

The k260 resting in my messy garage.

The Prentiss swivel vise I found with all original hardware. The metal strap makes it difficult to make the jaw swivel or I just need to practice more. It's in a tore down state to be come my Winter project.

And an entry to this fine thread a recent acquisition; a Yawman and Erbe mfg co "Y&E" file cabinet that has a unique opening feature. I have named it my ******** cabinet because of the strange horn like opening hardware.

FJ: love the Snappy and still one of my favorites.

also like the labeling on the flip out cabinet bins. :bounce:

what # prentiss is that and you might want to post it over on the main vise thread. it doesn't look like that bracket is for a break so wondering if a prior owner just made it so the jaw wouldn't swivel. the pin isn't standard either. so is the swivel base missing or does it have a bolt through mount. you can post answers over on the main vise thread or vise repair 101 thread if you might have questions about it.

so up high on the shelf to the left of Snappy in the first picture you have some cool i think sort of triangle shaped bins i've almost bought a few time to store nuts and bolts. it might be hard to post pictures of it or if you are able to i'd love to see the insides of it.

thanks

G20: i bet if you start looking for metal cabinets and organizers in your area you'll end up with some pretty cool stuff so best of luck and if you haven't looked already there are a lot of cool ones posted on this thread to give you a few ideas.

One of my suppliers makes those boxes. We had them at every shop I've worked at. Small parts suppliers can have them painted to match their store. When you flip the top of the box open there's space for labels.
Here's a video.

Yes Durham mfg. They happen to be about 20 minutes from me. I never realized there was a local company who made these. They are top quality just like the video shows.

project is complete. ended up switching the expanded metal side panel for an extruded aluminum panel, the expanded metal kept catching on my shirt as i walked by it. also put a radio in the void above the cabinet and the work deck, created a small panel to adjust the volume and the station. delivered and assembled the work bench. he was extremely pleased and surprised with the size. i kept hearing comments like"badass" and "awesome". i think he liked it. i didn't get any pictures of it in his basement, (forgot my phone) but i'm going over next week i'll get a few then.

From the top:
1) Huot drill bit cabinet, the top toolbox holds a bunch of tools my grandpa gave me
2 - 5) Metal file cabinet drawers (4) that stack on top of each other - power tools, tool belts and bags, pouches, etc.
6 - 8) Another 4 drawer file cabinet that holds paint/supplies, extra aerosol sprays and rags, and some misc phone wire and parts that I ran out of room for.
9) overall shot of the file cabinets
10) 6 drawer cabinet I found at a garage sale that holds a wide variety of items - mostly my older tool collection
11) Curtis Industries fastener drawers
