Good call bagged.
IMHO, that vise is not worth anything close to what the guy is asking. Personally, I wouldn't pay half.

I bet there are GJ members here that would mail out 2 babies in similar condition for the sum of $425

Royce: that blueish grey is very similar to the color used by Craftsman on their old tools and vises. here's my Craftsman 5196 vise that i think is a close match and if you like it there are several Craftsman 5197, and Craftsman 5198 restoration threads in this section and the vintage tools sections where those members posted the color that they ended up using or making. or maybe one of those members will see your post.

personally i always like the BLO and the way you add a few things to yours and use a little heat it's more like a JAPANNING METHOD that is even better.

good luck

Re: Parker original color

After taking this parker 973-1/2 apart, I've convinced myself it has original paint on it.
I am making a stand for it and would like to match the paint on it.
I went to the paint store and after trying for 30 minutes to match it, they said they could not.
Does anyone have a paint number for this dark blue color?
Thanks
Royce

Royce, that appears to be the same shade of Blue/grey my 386 is painted. I'm relatively sure it was either a navy contract, or for a ship builder, but can't be certain (Mine has a bronze swivel lock handle on it) are there any markings that would lean you that way on yours?

These two are the only two Parkers I recall with this color on them.

Drives, if the same color as mine, it's not close to the grey of the Craftsman vises.

Outlaw: my eyes are not what they once were that is for certain. i also am not a fan of PAINT or Parkers as you well know. thanks for the heads up. did you maybe polish up your brass holder on your Parker like some of the members do and do you have a picture handy of your Parker. i do recall the guys trying to match the original Craftsman blue/grey paint had similar issues as Royce was saying and thought it might be close enough.

ALL: speaking of BATTLESHIP GREY my camera's flash makes it look a bit lighter than it is in person, but here's my (or i'm holding it for a member that owns it and deciding of if he wants to ship it by itself or with others or sell it now that he's got more vises than i do) Morgan 50 that came off the USS INDEPENDENCE that was launched in 1956 and spent most of it's life in the Mediterranean until my seller rescued it from the ship while scrapping the ship. (yes that's the same vise in all the pictures and a picture of the ship it sat on for about 40+ years)

The big swivel jaw is still waiting for me to make a stand. I finally got a tracklayer gear to use as a base, now I need decent weather and time to build...

Here are two Wilton 9400 HDs I just finished restoring. Both of these were made 6-1-67 and have been together ever since.

Here's what I started with.
9400%20Twins_2-L.jpg

I debated on what color to paint these. They were originally a dark machine grey/battleship grey. I find that color boring, so opted to paint one Hammered Verde Green and the other Hammmered Silver. I'm calling this one The Silver Bullet, lol.

These are the end caps that were caved in and I did a thread a while back on their repair.

I have a couple of old Reed vises (models 203 and 104 1/2) that have extremely coarse teeth in the jaw face diamond pattern. Other manufacturers tended to go with a fine pattern like Parker. The old catalog pages called my Reed vises "machinist vises", so I wouldn't think that would mean rough work. When I think of machinist, I think of people making precision metal parts in machine shops. Why do you think Reed would choose such a coarse pattern? I need a vise for a work bench next to my metal lathe. Most lathe work related items that I would put in the vise would require me to use copper jaw caps in these Reeds. If I had a fine pattern like Parker, I wouldn't need too.

I leave lead caps on my jaws unless I can't squeeze it tight enough for it to stay still with them, which is very rare. In that case I'll use the jaws as is.
Very rare you'd ever actually want the serrated jaws unless you're doing very rough work

Outlaw,
I don't recall what part of the country it came from, but it seems it was not exposed to salt or humidity.
No bronze on it or any clues that I can see.
I went to another paint store today and this is what they came up with.
It is lighter than the vise with one coat over grey primer.
Maybe it will darken some with another coat.
Thanks
Royce

SO WHOS GOT 643 FEEDBACK ON EBAY?!? Whoever has a score of 643 is the one who bought the Pittsburgh vise catalog. So if you guys know each others ebay ids, then it surely wont be hard to find the owner of the Pittsburgh vise catalog.

i had a 6 inch Record Quick Release that was like new and maybe 30 years old and I sold it to a client that's an Englishman and he wanted my Peter Wright anvil as a pair. i have another 6 inch Record QR, but it's needing some spiffing up. i love the Quick Release action on these Record vices, but i think i like the lever action on my Record wood vise even better so an old Parkinson QR might be the vice i'm after that one day will just show up (I hope).

Parkinson, Record, Woden, Fortis etc., they'll all used the proper lever type QR on their larger models, so keeping an eye out for any of those should hopefully get you one, one day.

That QR mechanism which they used on the SQ series was some type of later design/abomination. :D Not common to their other QR models.

I'd think that if the new owner wanted people to know, they'd mention it themselves.

Fretters: I was going through some old catalogs when I found these. I thought you might be interested. Notice how badly the S&J devolved in 50 years. Saw makers making vices? Marples too?

Zoomie: best of luck on the restoration and Auction of the Wilton 800 bullet vise that you received from Wrenchguy and parts from others. got any before, during or after pictures to post up please do before you post it on the auction? sounds like you are making it like new again.

I sure hope they do find a cure or the cause of CANCER. i heard and i'll have to read up more about this, but i think they are getting close to finding out the cause and maybe cure for ALZEIMER'S which would be almost as awesome.

Fretters: i agree that anybody winning an auction or buying something of Craigslist or similar online site should have their privilege to mention their finds or what they actually paid for it.

Your post is exactly why i would love to find and own an older Quick Release vise and preferably a Parkinson or Record since i really thought the newer quick release Record is awesome if the older ones work better i'm sold.

Royce: is that a new vise stand you are making? also is that a 6 or 8 inch Reed holding it in place? you sure have a ton of great old vises especially since you almost live at the NORTH POLE.

Wow Royce that is a pretty sweet piece of steel. I agree with DRIVE, that would make an awesome art deco vise stand for a HUGE Vise.

I have a great deal of respect for vises such as this. To most it is junk....but look at the features of it. Pretty cool stuff. I would assume it was made with very few tools and absolutely no machines. Well maybe the spindle was made on a machine....enjoy

I wasn't the one who outbid everyone for the Reed 202-1/2 on eBay tonight.
I maxed out at $107. Two others sniped at higher bids.

I hope we'll be seeing someone here posting their new acquisition soon.
In the meantime, I'll just have to console myself by getting back to work on the 102-1/2 after the cleanup from the snow we'll be getting this week.

The base on the static jaw looks welded to me - can a more experienced eye confirm? Not sure if I want to deal with a weld repair on this old Reed

Tone: not really a REED even though made in the same town and maybe even the same foundry. that said it's a decent vise and not sure that's a weld or weld splatter, but not a super valuable or rare vise either way.

if it's not a weld it's a solid vise and since it looks like a blob instead of a braze it might be ok. a check in person or some pictures with the slide out and from a few angles would help if you are not close enough to see it in person easily.

good luck

EDIT: looks like Meatsis and Joe already have it scoped out and have you met your local vise guys yet? they throw vises at each other so if you are in the middle maybe you can catch one or two if you pay attention.

Vises: i like simple old tools too!!

It's not an old Reed. And yes the jaw support has been welded. I believe the slide is cracked also. Ask Joe.

I assumed it was made by Reed because of the numbering - thanks for the info! I learn more and more from this thread everyday.

I haven't bumped into any of the local vise guys - I'm more a vise noobie than a season vet like most of the guys on this thread haha

I just love taking these old things apart and breathing some new life into them with some grease and a rattle can. I usually pick one up at a time, refurbish it, then give it to a friend for cheap enough to fund buying another one to clean up. Appreciate the feedback.

My tootsies are feeling just fine.
Congratulations, that vise looks to be in great shape. I'm glad it went to another member.

A snipe bid is a high bid placed in the last few seconds of an auction to hopefully outbid anyone else that may try the same tactic, and deny them the chance to counter bid. The way eBay is now, the only way to have a chance to win a desirable item is to snipe. That's why my bid went in at 40sec left. I almost bid higher, but my wallet highjacked my hand. I still would have lost though. It's all good. I would have hated to lose it to someone who wasn't on GJ.

Can't wait to see more pics when you get it.

Ying: more than likely a 6 inch wide jaw bullet and yes $200 is a great deal and maybe a 1/3 of its value cause a new one is about $1,000. i'm not sure about new prices since i haven't bought a new vise in a while or looked for pricing either. i can say if that bullet was near me for that much i'd buy it cause it's half of what they sell for here.

If you need a 6" wide 145lb vise then you should already have that vise. If it is to big then it would be an excellent trade vise for what ever you want. Go get it right now is my suggestion.

Go get it! You can easily double or triple your money if you decide you don't want it.

It may have just sat for a long time. The factory put them on a thin piece of plywood with a couple of small bolts just like that, and a red string for a tag on the handle is also common. The jaws and anvil don't look beat up which is common on the big vises.
