I have to say: Amen, to that! Most of us on here have done that far more than just once or twice.

I found a drillpress floor base that I intended to replace my bench top base with, but the tubes were not the same size. Couldn't make the drill head work, but I got the idea for a Grinder base that could flip over for grinding or polishing.

Wha La - I think it'll do that job just fine...

BILL: that's why i love ORGANIZING cause it's like Birthdays when we were young some days.

Mikara: how does that grinder stand with the brake work for you? sorry it would take up too much floor space for me, but if you like it congrats on finding the pieces and making something useful out of it.

Shoot:
can you take a picture or two from the back of your grinders to show us how you connect that plate to the DP post? also how you are able to turn it from one grinder to the other? looks like a great idea if you've got an old DP base that is just sitting around.

The grinders are just bolted through the old press table.
Loosen the bolt and turn over.
I can adjust the height too.

MCM: i bet he doesn't sell it for that much, but that would make a stout stand that is for certain.

ALL:
i'm picking up a couple of these that go up to a max height of 25 inches so i might work great for my big REED 4c that is I think 17 inches tall.

anybody have a barber chair's base for a vise or grinder stand? another option i have is to make a STEAMPUNK type dining table for my daughter's condo.

Almost 2 years ago I found and bought a big, beefy stand from a guy who had another stand that I really preferred. As hard as I tried he would not sell it to me.

The original stand (first photo) is huge and extremely heavy (the end plates are 1" thick). It will be going into my new shop as a "multi-stand" with several bench grinders and a belt grinder attached to it.

As I was perusing CL the other day I happened to see that he had now offered the remaining stand for sale. I contacted him immediately and we secured the deal. Brought it to my storage unit yesterday, I think I will shorten this one and it will become home to my largest vise and take a prominent place in my new shop. About 40-42" tall, 1.25" end plates, cylinder wall is 1/2". Stout! And now they are both together again.

The big stand:

I have a rolling surface plate 20 by 30.
I use the hitch with the vice platform. I have one for a bench grinder, one for a vise.
One hitch receiver is mounted on one side that takes the hitch vice mount where I can swap tooling.
The other side I mounted 2 hitch receiver and created a table to plug in, it is used as my gearbox rebuild table. The table is drilled out so I can mount my 3n1, hand shear, and a couple of other tools. Plans are to mount a brace to the floor to prevent tipping.
But I store a vise and other heavy equipment under it and it is not very tipable.

Some great looking tools and ideas for bases/stands. This is a vise that I picked up recently. It appears to be a drill press stand with a simple adapter to mount the vise. Probably not well suited for heavy duty work but should suffice for the lighter stuff.

The original bolt that holds the swivel base to the vise body goes through the adapter and then into the swivel base/vise body.

Best,
Rob

Been lurking a long time, finally decided to start posting. Here's our main vise at "The LandSHark Compound" (stay tuned for a thread sometime this week, where I'll introduce myself and my friend/business partner. And another thread for my home shop, eventually.)

We built the whole vise stand, including the post, to replace the two screw jacks the builder/contractor that we bought the place from had supporting the two beams. 1/2" plate, 12" pipe elbow, solid as hell. (The octagonal concrete base is just because the scrap metal we used for the post would have been a foot too short otherwise.) Two 115v circuits (brown and white) with a receptacle on each side, and two 220v circuits (east and west.) Not exactly a "limited space" solution, but one of my favorite parts of the shop.

Picked this up yesterday, big old red grinder stand. The base is about 20" x 20" and very heavy, that's a 10" grinder on top! I plan to sell the grinder and replace it with my giant Metabo, also cut down that added top plate to make it less obvious. Will paint it old industrial green most likely. I love old cast iron stands and tables.

ALL: some of you have put some very nice grinder or vise stands on here that either Photobucket lost or maybe you've modified or made a better one. please post up your grinder and vise stands cause i for one see a lot of cool ones and i get asked all the time what is the best.

I have a few of my favorites that i'll post as i put them in one folder, but if you have a favorite please post it with a few pictures and if you want to show and tell how you made it all the better.

I bought this Reed 106 (130 pound 6 inch wide jaw non swivel vise) on this stand and even though it weighs maybe 250 pounds or more it's a little tippy so i'd need to bolt it down or weld on another thick plate for the base. or maybe get a truck drum (fill it with cement) and weld this to the drum?

drives: I am assuming that Reed 106 is currently mounted at an ideal working height? If so it would probably be best to increase the base's footprint and NOT make it taller utilizing a truck brake drum. I'm really NOT a fan of wheels and brake drums for pedestal bases. Functional but ugly. SEMI TRUCK DISC BRAKE ROTORS look okay....

IF you can find a spot you deem ideal I would definitely just bolt it to the floor. IMO the current dimensions/proportion is VERY aesthetically appealing.

I made a stand for my Reed a couple months back and while it is extremely stable I wasn't pleased with the proportions. Gonna have to do a redo.

AKQ: sorry i forgot to give you proper accolades/kudos for posting up your very stout and ULTRA COOL vise stand. IT ROCKS. WELL DONE!!

Lis: of course you are correct that i'd then heve to shorten the pipe on that REED otherwise i'd be climbing up on it to use that one. I started off my thinking just adding a 18x16 1 inch plated that i've got sitting on a shelf and even with that i'd probably still want to bolt it down so why not save the plate for my barber chair stand and just bolt down the Reed. good thoughts as per usual. thank you cause i tend to stray and maybe once I have my welding set up ready to go when I want to my thinking will change.

ALL: anybody made a nice vise/grinder stand out a barber or dentist's chair? i've got two and i'm not quite sure how I want to mount them and if i want to make them mobile. HELP??

or maybe i'll just bolt a plate to this old grinder cast iron stand?

drives those barber chairs will make awesome stands. Not sure how to make it mobile easily. However the BEST scenario would be retractable casters INSIDE the base. Then the base would be in full contact with the floor when in use. Maybe utilize the hydraulics to raise the entire unit to engage the wheels.

The stand in the BOTTOM photo I really like also.

Here's a mobile stand I made for my Cole vise. It has a fold up handle on the front and sealed ball bearings to roll on (wheelbarrow style)

5f552cdee47c2957c6c75fb0a5b6eb8f.jpg

And my aforementioned stand I built for my REED 4CA. VERY stable but ended up a lot **** uglier than I thought. The vise has since been removed pending a rethink on stand design.

here's my little 140 pound Parker 956 vise that sits on about a 200 pound stand that I drag outside if I really need to have a solid vise. any ideas on best ideas to put some wheels under or attached to it? I posted a picture in the first post showing wheels on an old wheel and would that be the best method to attach them?

more pictures and ideas are appreciated because I've wanted to be able to use and see my old vises in action and not just sitting in a big old Lyon cabinet every now and then.

This one and #3 photo in post one are beautiful. I would move this one with a pallet jack or a trolley jack. #5 would roll easier if you took the stupid wheels off.

Who has only one vise in one spot? Set your heaviest one on a mount like a post anvil set in concrete but close to the ground. Put a light one on a post welded to a plow disc or brake drum. Mount a medium heavy on the edge of a bench. Move a versa vise all over creation.

Here's the stand I built for my propane forge with "wings" to accommodate moves with a pallet jack.

Looking good flyingblind.

The guy who welded it wasn't too keen on trying to stick steel to cast iron. Not having to lug the whole thing around was nice too.

I have only welded a couple but they were cast steel not cast iron. Cast iron doesn't throw sparks from a grinder. Cast steel welds up but may need a preheat.

Re: Vise and Grinder stands. I'm looking for ideas on how to use several in limit...

Drivesitfar asked me to post my bench grinder stand, that I built, in his thread so here goes.

.......
8e567026f0a0828806029bdd4e04f0b2.jpg

I realize that the stand is not everyone's cup of tea but...

Cup of tea? It's like a puzzle to me, only industrial version of one. So as I'm looking for ideas to take a grinder from a welding table I have and mount it by itself somewhere I come across this cool idea but it's racking my brain because I am trying to zoom in and figure out how the two horizontal pieces were put in the plumbing. Right under the base is what looks like a cross, then pipe *******, and then elbows. Maybe it's just Sunday and my brain is shut down but how did the small horizontal pipe ****** get in there down below ? By threading really tight and then loosening /threading into the other tee as you tightened the above assembly? Just curious anyway.

Be cool if that valve had pressure so when some kid come by and opened it, he'd have a water fountain..:) be some good iron content too I guess in that drink.

Cool restoration mechanically and cosmetic by the way. I'm new to the board and looking to improve efficiency in my shop. Just brought in a scissor lift dock platform on Friday, weighs about 2,900 #'s & trying to figure out how to use it for various projects. Thought being able to adjust the height would be a help.

Weld it up and grind smooth after screwing each half in?

Here is one I have on an old dentist chair base.

IMG_2196_zpswovsom0h.jpg

Jim,

I also have a stand using an old "Ritter" dentist chair. I made the mistake of turning it on it side while moving and lost some oil. I can't figure out how to add new hydraulic oil and what type to use. I lost just enough that the chair seat does not stay up.

Sorry I can't help with any advise Randy. I alway was hoping to get a Ritter base as that is my family name, but no relation to the company. I have another base waiting to be repurposed after we get moved. It is an electric hydraulic model made by White if I remember correctly. It too lost some oil when it was tipped to remove from the pickup truck. It was just an open reservoir so no wonder it spilled out. I can post some pics if anyone is interested, but I don't think it will help you. I had a friend that specialized in dentist office remodels and several times a year he would give me a heads up when a chair was heading for the dumpster. I probably had at least four pass through my shop.

Boat: would you mind telling us or maybe showing us how you attached your vise to the top of the dentist chair base? also nice stand for your grinder too.

Lis: looks like a BBQ so does your forge double as that? how often do you fire it up to heat up and pound some metal?

ALL: i just saw this old Swedish anvil on this cool (I think it's wood with some heavy duty steel accents?) stand with a cheap vise on it. anybody else think this stand is cool?

1/8 inch thick diamond plate bolted to table.

Table can roll around the shop, with 4 swivel wheels.

2 RED pins for quick grinder remove, grinder below has 8 inch wire brush.

Drives, I do like that anvil stand, but I wonder how it might restrict the use of the anvil. I think I would want the horn facing the other way. Any info on the Swedish anvil? I have one made in Sweden.

The base for the grinder is original to the grinder. The wheels were added by the previous owner but I like them, things need to be on wheels in my shop.

The vise is mounted to the dentist chair base by an intermediary piece of metal. I'll have to find the pics and get back to you.

Here are the pics of the base.
The column was drilled and tapped to mount the chair.

IMG_2194_zpsfgdjbkmx.jpg

I'm not a metal worker but I do the best that I can. I had some 3/8" aluminum that I drilled to match the hole spacing on the column and then I used lag screws to fasten it to the laminated wooden top.

IMG_2193_zps8sbunjq4.jpg

Then I through bolted the works to the column. The vise mounting holes were already drilled.

IMG_2195_zps07tkv5di.jpg

The other base that I have is completely different. I'll sort that out when I get to it.

Boat: thanks for posting how you bolted the vise's base on your dentist's chair stand. great idea and use for it and I know you are maybe still in a middle of a move, but did you like using this hydraulic stand when you had it at your old place?

I'd like to trade you something for that old WT grinder cause i've got it's cousin as a bench top drill press sitting in my garage now. very cool grinder and stand combo and love that company's old stuff.

thanks again

Xman: thanks for sharing your bench/stand.

All: a GJ member posted this on his garage gallery thread and i hope he doesn't mind if i post it over here too. with a couple hitch mounts on it for a vise and grinder OMG this could almost be a workshop on the go if you could load it on your trailer or truck.

here's the link to the build and i'm sure he'd like to hear there what you think of it if you have time to check it out and post.
