This Craftsman 3 drawer top box followed me home today. The box is a single original owner item and has been gently used in a temperature controlled shop its entire life. The original owner is in his 80s now and has been a life long wood worker.

This is the cleanest one I've ever found in the wild. All it needs is some graphite dry lube on the slides and it's ready for service in the shop.

TH: that old heritage Craftsman box almost looks new and with a wrinkle finish too. WELL DONE!!

have you tried BEESWAX (or Doors ease that is maybe 95% beeswax) on your slides yet? does the graphite dry lube collect dust and dirt or seem to work pretty well and any particular brand you use?

Wow! That is a beauty! Am I out of place wondering what you had to pay for that?

I have the same box sitting in my shop. Yours is definitely prettier.

I haven't tried beeswax only because I'm lazy. I use powdered graphite that I bought at the flea market one time. I forget the brand but I had to transfer the stuff to a new container.

The graphite works well. Grease, dry lube spray, etc. I've used just about everything. Grease is the worst in a high dust area though. You will have to clean and re-apply every so often.

Nope, not out of line and I don't mind telling you because of the circumstances. The seller has about 5 dogs and 2 cats. One of the dogs is sick and requires medication. The proceeds from the tool sales are going to buy medication for the dog. I paid 50 bucks.

The seller is going to have a bunch of additional items for sale. When I receive the pictures/items, I told the seller I would post them here in the classifieds. I know that we have wood working guys who would love the complete sets of late 40s Craftsman chisels and such.

Yea, the deal was certainly good and so was the cause. The seller was specific about finding these items a good home and was happy to see the shop where this box was headed. I can finally move my small heritage top box along and replace it with this gem.

So after very little research from the inter-web, it looks like my newly acquired cabinet is made by Cole Steel, and apparently are pretty expensive. I thought at best I could get my money back if my wife hated me bringing it home, and now I know why three people offered to buy it off of me while purchasing it at an estate sale earlier today. One lady wanted to double my money, and I thought that was pretty generous. Good thing I didn't give it up. I like it a lot!

P: yep those Cole file cabinet have good size drawers. i think i've got 3 or 4 of them. i'm guessing you might want to brush the rust off and maybe paint it or just leave it as is and start using it.

i put a couple underneath a 8 foot butcherblock bench that worked out pretty well. then i found another spot for the 2 of them and put this letterpress cabinet and another Cole under my bench that is white.

you did good cause those are popular!!

Mr. P, about 3 weeks ago I picked up a vertical 10 drawer card file cab, for $10. last night I saw one on CL for $450... I don't think that is happening but some things do go for stupid $$

Went to a tag sale in SE Portland this morning to check out a MAC tool box--seven drawer top box on a 10 drawer bottom roller, probably 70's-80's vintage, extremely clean. I got there about a half hour after the sale began but the box was one of the first items sold for $150.

Wondering if any GJ members in the PDX area grabbed it. Nice one--well worth the money in my opinion.

Here's an old Duplex tool box that I believe I bought from the swap meet, just needed some oil and it works great. I will use it for my electrical tools and stuff. To be honest I initially couldn't even see the name and didn't know it would end up being a neat box that has a following. I also didn't know it might be 80 years old!

Now this one I need some help with. Can anyone here help me find anything on this box to ID a number, model, vintage,....anything? It measures about 14" high and 24" long. The drawer handles have a very neat pattern and match so I think they're original. It was painted red and then black over the entire box including the emblem, so that's how I know it was painted red later in life. What might be the original color?

The inside is surprising clean and rust free, the drawers move silky smooth, but the top hatch is missing the "catcher" for the hoop as the picture shows. Someone appears to have also screwed/welded a reinforcement around it that is ugly but functional. The inside/functionality of the box is in far better condition than the outside/aesthetics. Cost at swap meed was $20.

Thanks everyone.

Open/remove the drawers, and see if they painted the bottoms, or the inside of the box. Most never do...

I'd say early 50's at a guess based on the 24" dimension.

only one single drawer was not bare steel, and it is the top middle, with a faint amount of light green-ish....mist green paint.
Thank you for the help.
How do you remove the drawers?

All but one drawer interior appeared to be mare steel. One drawer interior was that light green.

And one drawer appears to be haunted by the spirits of tools once stored in the lonely confines of this old beast:

Not the interior of the drawers, you said those were bare; Take a drawer out. The inside of the box itself. (They did paint the interiors, if not very well...)

here's the one I have. It had almost no paint when I got it so I rattle canned it with what I had. It was made by the advertising display co. Inside the drawers is the original gray paint.

No, but I was able to confirm that it says "Advertising Metal Display Co". There didn't appear to be any number stamp. I will take a picture later on when it warms up.

Yes, it is Korean War vintage. Someone here posted a pic on them and had the info. I have one from my FIL. Mine is in very good condition with the original green paint.
