CRTDI - that Stahlwille set is pretty nifty!

Oldtuleguy - I have that same Herbrand set! That is about the whackiest spinner handle I've ever seen!

RE: "Rugged" set

so you grabbed that one! who do you suppose that was made for? I'm guessing some hardware retailer.
looks the same as the Penens stuff, doesn't it?

Odes -

Philadelphia Manufacturing Company - that's a new one.
The spinner doesn't fit all the sockets because..... they're hex drive sockets, or they're 9/32" drive sockets, or the spinner is actually 9/32" drive ?

Private Lugnutz -

How closely does that spinner handle resemble that oddball model you posted a week or so back?

Penens set labeled rugged tools
Hmm. What our host said. I can't find zip on RUGGED, and searching Google Books and Newspapers.com on "Rugged Power and Machine Tools" results in just what you might think it would result in: a gazillion generic ads or books reading "rugged" as an adjective, not a proper name. Also, why would a power and machine tools company have a manual midget nut spinner set? I can see the usual set of special wrenches, but a socket set? I'm not a power tools guy - does that make sense? They made and sold their own power tools, but bought non-branded stuff from PTTI to accompany them? I dunno. Or those pieces might not be original to the box? Or it is PENENS related and you have a FOAK to the board! Pretty cool set either way.

the spinner doesn’t fit all the sockets
I had the same questions our host has. Because some of them are female hex drive?

Philadelphia Manufacturing Company - that's a new one...[ ]...

It looks like a dead ringer to me! Also perhaps the Sliding Tee. And guess where I found them? At my flea market on the other side of the state! (I'm down the shore, and my Wednesday and Friday fleas are local, but my Thursday flea is just a few miles from the PA line, and I see lots of Philly stuff there. (Never heard of Philadelphia Mfgr Co!)

Odes, please take a few more photos of the Spinner and the Sliding Tee so we can compare them to the orphan Spinner and Sliding Tee I posted here, and here. And, if you wouldn't mind going the extra inch, please mic the diameter of the shank. Mine has a wicked step-down from 7/16" to the 1/4" drive stud formed on the end.

Williams NM-8 set.
Super clean and minty looking CRTDI! Classic 50's set.

Williams always made stylish tools! Nice set!

It's all penens numbers, looks like other late 40s 50s penens. Sockets marked "alloy" and "made in usa" but oddly not marked penens. Maybe contract made for this rugged company.

Spinner has a broach on top and labeled p49. Some red dye in groove and stamps on sockets.

I'm inclined to think there's a good possibility Penens cranked out that little set for a private-label contract for some retail chain.

I've seen so many examples of real oddball stuff I never heard of before: DoItBest, Spag's, Gambles... to name a few. Unheard of here. Perhaps common in the Midwest (DoItBest) or East Coast (Spag's).
There's just something about that label that screams "mass merchandiser hardware retailer".

You don't have to be a WalMart to have your own name slapped on a product:

DoItBest is (Yancey’s) brand if I remember correctly. I know Yancey carries the DoItBest brand as their house brand currently. Yancey used to be a very large lumber distributer on the west coast, mainly the valley. Modesto, Turlock, Newman area. Now there is only a couple stores left but the Newman store has been in operation since the 1880’s I believe.

I agree! I have some 3/8” drive Sparta sockets but have never seen any 1/4” drive. CRTDI’s collection is amazing. I am in awe already, and they just keep coming.

I see odds and ends pop up on Ebay but nothing worth farting around with - trying to find onesie-twosies on that stuff is damn near impossible on some brands.

Still looking for a Husky 1/4" ratchet RHFT that's period correct for the Litton era. I think I'm after a CM43... not sure.

I received this rusty Japanese hex drive set in an eBay lot. I was tempted to throw them away but the set was complete so I cleaned them up a bit.

New Britain sourced Sparta set.
I don't know if it will physically fit in the box, if it belongs with that set (by production year, logo, etc), or if you even want it, but I have an orphan amber-handled "SPARTA" spinner that I will probably never find the rest of a set to make it feel at home. I will post a photo later.

I think Odes solved the mystery real quick.
I am very confident, but I wish he would measure the shank and post photos of the same views I did so we could compare. I think he may have missed my post. I'll ping him again.

CRTDI’s collection is amazing. I am in awe already, and they just keep coming.
It's funny how things sometimes go here. My first and only encounter with CRTDI before this thread goes back several years ago to the very early days of the Blackhawk thread. I found a Q.D. No. 32CD set and he and I went back and forth a few times about contents and year of production and he found an ad that really helped me decide how to refinish the attache style case. See page 3 (from 2012!). Consequently, I always thought of him as a Blackhawk guy. And I didn't really have too many other conversations since then. Until now! LOL. Either he was keeping this collection under wraps back then, he has really upped his game in the last few years, or I was just dead wrong! HAHA!

...black oxide.
Almost as black as your SK set! Very nice.

CRTDI,

Like I said above, I don't know if it's the correct year/model number etc, or if your Williams SPARTA set even had a spinner, but if you want this one, PM me... This one is just sitting here in my orphan drawer.

Yes Lugz I missed your post and the sockets are square drive not fitting the sockets is the wrong word don’t know if you can tell from the pics but some sockets are a very tight fit and some are sloppy. I think that spinner you posted is the same. I don’t have a caliper with me out of town working. 6d02637bccdc3e9e05983cb8757df418.jpg76428f0a0ddd1275bc924973c26ec801.jpg2c3ed042a292c648e5ba00ff46213cdc.jpga6da62d1544e33ba0d3c18ad291cd0f2.jpg03591a3b6cdb22fb562f1f0145f7cffd.jpg0dea0bcc1fa2aeaf2dc0e9e5414ad171.jpg3f3197227e239a6c56becbc51bd80870.jpg3ea89afd864c8f05b0fa85a44fe39943.jpg

No worries. It's unmistakable. That is a dead ringer! Not only was it unidentified, but nobody had ever seen anything like it before. Now less than 2 weeks later, we have a second one and a positive ID! For the spinner and the sliding tee. Philadelphia Mfg Co.! :bounce: Love it. Thanks, Odes.

That's a really good question. I'm not sure that I actually know all the flavors that exist. Think a got at least a couple more though...:)

Mustang set. Pretty sure this is New Britain sourced. The lid/cover is a PIA novelty as I always manage to spill the contents out whenever I move this set around....:rolleyes2
