I found an interesting Chas Parker no.974 yesterday. The guy said he got it from his uncle who was a career navy man. It’s been painted battleship gray and it’s in great shape.the handle has been tapped on but the body barely has a mark on it.

Another nice score

I've had this vise for many years, can't remember where I got it but it doesn't screw in or out. It's a clamp on vise called a Grand Quickset with the 3 in jaws, I believe the lever that is supposed to move the screw is bad, seems like the spring that holds it in place is plenty strong. Anyone know about these and if they can be repaired?

I have one of those that is rusted frozen Need to soak it in an E tank and see if I can dislodge it.

Does your screw rotate? That lever is a quick disconnect for the main screw. if its not engaged or its striped, its not moving, Will the slide move if you push/pull?

I found this guy on the 'list Not sure if its a good deal. Bullet 400 in very near new condition, 1977.

I have no affiliation with the guy. But figured one of the guys needing a good vise might be interested and I could point in the right direction.00v0v_9zJsB47KyS6_600x450.jpeg

I think the lever is stripped and it’s attached at the pivot using a pressed in pin of some sort so getting it off to look at is going to be a problem, everything else works as it should.

I have 5 of those.---Had 6 but gave one to my Son.---The 2 guides/slides seemed to be bronze coated/vulcanized so when they are operating properly they're motion is real smooth.---Good close tolerances on those clampers too.---They are pretty heavy as table clamp vises go, so when you get yours going, you are going to have nice item there.---Good luck on it.

I was watching these 2 auctions for amusement. Both ended yesterday and the disparity of the final value is kind of mind boggling. The beautifully restored baby bullet and powerarm jr. with Kevin's jaws went for not only less than the Prentiss watchmaker, but for less than every baby bullet on a powerarm I've seen sold in the last year. The Prentiss is obviously very old and in very good original condition so no discredit to it. c5efed7d076537437fc8b6ae20809baf.jpg2e1124f24e7835fb193dd7f63bcc0028.jpg

In my personal opinion a unrestored original example will always be worth more then a equal restored example. I didn’t win the bid on that prentiss, but I can see the value as each of the prentiss vises were hand pin stripped from the factory. So each prentiss jewelers vise is in essence it’s own unique piece and many of the examples are missing the original paint. To be honest I’m on the hunt for a nickel plated example anyways.

Wish I had seen that baby auction. I routinely get between $550 and $595 for my restored babies on powerarms. That would have made me a couple $$. Might have something to do with xmas season, and less $$ to spend. I just sold a nickle plated Prentiss swivel jaw/swivel base on ebay a few weeks back.......

Beautiful job on the workshop, it looks like it took more than a few weekends to pull it together.

Thanks it was built over a month by my builder friend.
It’s specificaly for my motorcycle only,it’s built to a high standard.
I’ve kitted out the inside, painting, racking etc.

That looks like a nice vise. I can not clearly see the brand name. What is the brand and what is the CO?

It’s Magnuson sounds Swedish but I think it’s Chinese though I am not sure.
It was a bargain so I had to buy it.

I don’t know what CO means in this context?

Just got done taking it apart, it appears there is too much slop where the handle goes through the jaw preventing the screw from getting a good tight fit against the clamper. Not sure if there’s any way to repair it or it’s just worn out.

Looked at a 500-year-old post vise and 600-year-old double-horned anvil today. Both German. Digging the face on the vise.

Lesser: VISE ART at its finest. Thanks for sharing. Did it follow you home??

Smitty: I think it’s been 24 hours since you posted a new vise purchase. What’s on your radar or just anything old, big and USA made?

Wow Dutch,that’s some price.
My Paramo is nice quality but cost nothing compared to that.
Will it sell?

The real ones are considered holy grails and many of the owners of the original cars would pay lots to get one, the replicas will always be cheaper but they are basically the same vice, you can still get brand new replicas, but they are very expensive. I do not know if that one will sell, its the first I have seen come up.

I did a mild clean up on the Wilton C2 vise that I found earlier in the week. The vise has 5” jaws and weighs in at 109 lbs. it’s really a well made vise with a 7/00 fabrication date.7afaf9451ee94adf6f46aa31f41272c2.jpg0efc069d571ac423a4dbad7bc0d743c6.jpg

Got the new collar/washer from autopts, had time today to assemble and see what I have. Slop/backlash is same - 1/2 turn each way (no surprise). Putting the washer in the pocket didn't change it much. Now that the spindle is riding against the new collar, up/down play is really evident, so slop forward/back, and up/down.

Measured the spindle diameter. On handle side of groove, it's 2" like it should be, on D-jaw side of groove it's 19.77". Diameter of D-pocket is 2.013" to 2.016".

I talked to our in house machinist on Friday, he's willing to take a look at the D-jaw to see if he can (is willing) to clean up the face of the pocket. He didn't sound too excited about it. I know not to take anything off the outer diameter of the pocket, just clean up the face.

Am I correct in saying I need a new spindle to fix (reduce) the up/down slop? Then if I can get the D-jaw pocket refaced it just needs shimmed to reduce the forward/back slop.

Sorry, CO was a typo, it was meant to be COO (country of origin) which you already said you are not sure of.

Lonstar, take the main screw out and check it for being straight. That up/down sound like its bent slightly. if it is bent you can press it straight its not too hard to do.

Clean it off and roll it on a flat surface. threads and un-threaded, all...

I don't know how, but I left out that this vise is in the Chicago area, and $350.

Not sure if that's a good price or not. Seems he may have a number of other USA old school vises.

Ill let whoever know where to find the info if you can't locate it.

Just picked up this 6" Milwaukee Morgan vise. Looking forward to stripping her down and giving her a new coat of Federal Safety Blue.:)

So I've been keeping my eyes sharply peeled for an original Parker under-bench swivel-lock spanner for some time now. One *finally* came up and I jumped!

I didn't even think to check the measurements...

Could there be different sized (thickness) of nuts for these Parkers? Could you use a different sized nut with matching thread?

I managed to get this 1750 prepped and primed for the most part. Rust came off easy with a wire wheel. Went over the entire surface with three levels of emery paper after, and used my snapon files to perfect the metal on the jaws/anvil. Surface is surprisingly smooth now. Have a metallic gunmetal paint ready for it in a day or two after primer hardens.
