Just for the record, on the very next post and 9 minutes later, I gave him a solid lead with the name of a vise guy living on the same island, (Maui) as the OP.

Indeed you did, and I appreciate that. Speaking only for myself, I'd feel very awkward cold calling someone I've never met, asking them for help getting a deal on a scarce item (my impression of the tool market in Hawaii, based on what I've read here). Doesn't look like any else has offered anything on the old US iron front aside from some hyperbole and bluster from a different dude.

This thread is a little bonkers all around. Not sure if all the forged steel vise makers are big fat liars, or what.

I understand your reluctance. The guy I referenced in that post and I have been regular contributors on the GJ main vise thread that has been going for over 10 years. I’ve never met him in person but based on reading many of his contributions, he seems to be a great guy. The general vibe on that thread is to help each other rather than cutthroat competition. Of course there are exceptions.

I contacted him already to ask about vises there. Hopefully the whole “friend of a friend” connection will lead to something.

I’d sell him a nice Combo Vise for a fair $300 price. I just checked fedex for shipping a 90 pound crate to Hawaii. It would cost over $600 for shipping.

‘What about the fireball vise he says it’s made from Forged steel. How does it compare to the the rest of the top mentions ones? The yost or the carpi or even the rigid.
They are back ordered till June but I have been thinking about pulling the trigger since no one seems to have any experience. I’m sure the are nice for the money but has anyone ever used one?

Sent from my iPhone using Garage Journal

From the looks of it, the fireball looks to be exactly the same as the Capri.

The Capri's are plentiful on Amazon.

Thanks for the reply Shiftless. I don't doubt that the vise thread is full of good helpful folk, I was catching up on it earlier and it's a bunch of guys sharing a common passion, not a cesspool full of sharks. Good on ya for helping.

I knew shipping to Hawaii was expensive, but man... really puts the $8 gallon of milk in perspective. Might as well buy a car from the mainland and have someone slip a vise in the trunk to gain some economy of scale.

That’s an interesting idea.
Here’s another interesting fact.
Round trip flight on Hawaiian Airlines is about the same money as shipping a vise. I could pack a 75 pound vise in a wheeled carry on and get it over there that way. Better to split it up in 2 pieces in 2 suitcases to avoid the overweight surcharge.

Shift made a solid offer, but there’s no winning here. You offer help
/advice and you’re a shameless scammer pushing vises on the weak minded. Or you don’t and your a selfish jerk who wouldn’t lift a finger to help a fellow GJer. I wish the OP the best. Apologies for my part in derailing your thread.

In the case of the vise in question, I highly doubt it is forged. Look at the shape and tell me how you would do that. Also you are comparing ductile iron which is not the same as ausquenched ductile iron. Ausquenching adds to ductility and ultimate strength. I believe the real comparison here should be cast steel vs ausquenched ductile iron. Unfortuanately I don't have my references here as I left them for my successors when I retired but I believe ADI will win the comparison.
Edit. I went to matweb and got a fair comparison. ADI tensile is 125ksi yield and 141 ksi ultimate. That compares to 60ksi yield and 72 ksi ultimate for mild steel. Cast steel will be a bit less, forged steel a bit higher in one direction only. It's not even close.

Just to keep this consistent, the term should be AUSTEMPERED, as that is the common terminology for the material being discussed.
