N8 can I be one of your "out of town friends?" LOL
Honestly, I love Vegas. I try to get out there at least twice a year just to enjoy the weather and mentality (people are soooo much nicer there than here in Jersey). I dream of retiring out there in 15 or 20 years and building a nice little house for the family with a dream garage just like yours. You've done well man and best of all, you have great story behind it all. There's a lot of character there in that property to say the least and if those walls could talk you could probably right a movie.
I can't wait to see more.

I had to google that one.

Interesting!

Halibrand had deep roots in circle track and Indy car racing. His components also had a big part in early hot rodding, drag racing and at El Mirage and the salt of Bonneville.

Thanks all.
Gonzoengineer - There are a few good threads over there about Halibrand and His work.
Here is another: HALIBRAND

I have a big interest in their history. The role he played in the early development of racing is historical. Cars with his wheels and other components won the Indy 500 over 19 years in a row.

any updates at all

I wish i had more than I do! Back issues have really slowed me down. I have four herniated disks and have been trying to deal with that.
I had someone come out to look at all the doors to get them in better working order. I finally have all the welding gear wired correctly for the new shop.
I still don't have everything placed where I want it because construction has started on two new cars.
I built a body table to get my coup off the floor and in a workable spot.

bodytable32.JPG

I have opted out of the paint booth because I want to use the 1 car as a machine shop. I have been trying to clean as I go and get rid of a lot of the items that have followed me around for the last 13 years that I know I will never use.
I also got another car that we will be restoring. It's a historic 1940's circle track car.

I will post some photos on what has been done shortly.
Thanks for the interest.

And last but not least I got the other garage tidied up and functional.
Got the cases moved and a fridge in there for cold beers on warm days.

N8, I was wondering when we'd hear more. I like hearing how the bad people got caught and the good people got the HUGE garage with a false wall. Nice place. I'll soon be posting my build to be part of the crowd.

Great place. Lot of space you have there!
Is that tool cabinet home made??? Is neat! I am building one myself and that one you have there is a very good example of what I need to do.

Love old cars. I plan to build a v8 hot rod in the future.

Take care and keep the good work

Corsario,
Which one are you talking about bud?
If its the stainless one thats just a regular old Kobalt I got on super cheap sale.
Most of the other ones are older ones that have followed me around from my teens.

It's official. New name - The Compound

Not sure if I should post this here but I have a question.
This is the driveway that goes around the house to my shop.

Driveway.JPG

It is asphalt.
Right now it's to difficult to get my big truck and trailer back to the shop area.
Its a good 36' combined rig.
I want to remove the trees on the west along with the curbing and either do asphalt or concrete in that area.

What is the more cost effective and more durable solution?
The area to fill would be about 15' x 200'
Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Anyway...great place. Keep the good work!

Take care

Re: It's official. New name - The Compound

I would do concrete in there but that will probably be close to twice the price of asphalt. Concrete would be the cooler, more durable way to go. Especially in that heat (little guy walking barefoot in the summer), but asphalt can be a pretty durable if you use a good solid base. If you were to do asphalt, your best base would be to get asphalt grindings. I don't know however if your local code would allow that.By me in Chicago we build roads using grindings for a base but the villages and towns have not realized that if you use grindings for a base on an asphalt driveway, the driveways will last longer. And the reason why, is that the grindings are loose like gravel. Then when rolled and compacted it is essentially a solid base as opposed to gravel that can only compact so much.

So in all.. I would say concrete if you have the green to do so.
or asphalt with a 4-6 inch base of grindings with a 2 inch binder mat and a 2 inch surface mat.

Well I wish I had tons of accomplishments to update but I have been busier on the collecting front than actually working.

Here are a few new items I added to the shop over the last week or so.

I got a cool late 60's Front Engine Dragster and a hemi to play with.

Thanks for the compliments Mark but I hate to burst your bubble, I have a few Chevy's in there too!

There have been some talks to re cast the quick change.
It is actually up with a good friend of mine and was supposed to be re cast for use in a car this year at Bonneville.
Since they completely re built the car there was no time to concentrate on the casting.
I wont be able to get many casts out of this pattern because of the age. I want to keep it in the shape it's in. I may redo a replicate pattern some day.

I think I can forgive you for the few Chevys as there's plenty of cool stuff there too.:bounce:
I guess preserving those patterns is the sensible thing to do but, wouldn't it be great to have a Q/C from the original moulds!

Just like the garage...But with beds....LOL

Being in Vegas puts a lot of truth behind that statment. I had my Dad sweep the grounds with his metal detector to see if we could find any fingers, with rings attached!! I think we are safe. we found more Horse shoes than body parts.

how many body parts did you find?

Man! That is one awesome place! Out of curiosity, the cars/projects you are building, are those all yours or customers?

Hi,

Thanks for the compliments.

All of the cars in the main shop and the garage attached to the house are my personal cars. (Last count was 9 cars and 4 motorcycles) My tastes vary so I like selection. Plus half of them are current build projects. LOL

The cars shown in the old photos of the small shop were friends. Those are gone now and I have replaced them with another free car given to me by a friend.
I have a horrible obsession.

I enjoy working on and building cars. There are customer cars, but they have to be pretty special cars or restorations like the 1936 Chevy in one of the pictures. That is a joint ownership restoration and that is a special race car.

I just don't enjoy it as much if I am doing it for someone else now a-days. Then it just becomes work and I already do enough of that.

I have the same vice. It's an off shore mass production cheapo that I bought at Busy Bee (kind of like Grizzly but not as big). They have bad cast peices and paint as thick as body fill to make them look better. They work fine for pounding on and holding things tight (... sort of).

I would have too agree with PCO6, I bought one looked just like that at Harbor Freight, about 12 to 14 years ago, and it had a bunch of filler to make it look good.

Thanks guys for the identification on the vice.
It doesn't work right now and maybe that's why! :)
Ill use it to pound things up with.
It was free so I'm not out anything on it.

Sorry for digging up an old thread but I love this place and everything you have that fills it! I love the fact that you have a old Halibrand pattern! I live just north of the town that Halibrand was based out of so it awesome to know someone is preserving it!
