Well after finishing the house 10+ years ago the garage was never fully completed. After reading thru many of the threads here it has inspired me to finally finish my garage. Okay it is nothing flash, especially by most that are on here, but hopefully when it is finished it will be very practical and tidy.

This is what I started with a basic three car garage. It was unlined so it provided plenty of shelf spaces between the studs. (damm I will miss that)

I started by lining the bottom of the garage with a plywood panel board in New Zealand we call it shadow board. I rebated a grove in the top of the ply and used a "H" section aluminium profile to join the ply and the sheet rock.

I managed to make some cupboards for extra storage between the studs (it is a double depth stud at this part)

After the panel and sheet rock was complete I had to build the over head storage. I decided to make steel shelves and suspend them from the ceiling. I used Unistrut Chanel to suspend the 8mm threaded rod

All the sheet rock and suspension installed and painted

Installed the overhead shelving. Made these out of rectangle section steel with 2" square reinforcing type mesh and then powder coated them

I pinched the idea of using the air couplings overhead to store my air tools

That's it so far, will post more pics as the progress continues.

The list of the things to do list are:

Finish lining the roof, Install the retractable air and power reels. Grind the floor and clear coat, build new work bench and sliding shadow boards

Welcome, Kiwipip!

Nice setup You have. May I ask for some outside pictures as well?

I like Your overhead shelves. Great idea to have steel mesh bottoms, so they don't collect dust.

Nice job on the garage and nice job on using the unistrut. I haven't seen that used like that on here before.

And we need to see outside pics of the garage. Somewhere I think it may be in the rules.

BTW...Welcome to GJ. This place is like crack for addicts. Once you spend a little time on here, then it will get you hooked and lead to harder things and more money. :spit:

Okay haven't had much time but have got a few things done.
Installed the Couplings on the overhead racking that I made to store my Air tools (Thanks Garage Journal for the great idea)
I also started the shadow boards. The one is the photo is the one attached to the wall there will be a sliding one in front of this that is attached to the overhead Racks. The rear houses woodworking Tools and the one in front will be engineering.

I also started to install the sheet rock to the ceiling, but after just one sheet trying to get my wife to hold it, I thought my marriage was worth more than this so got a Lift. The problem is the local hire place wanted $30 day rental when you can buy a lift (So its Chinese) for $130, so now I can go at my own pace and give to to someone when I'm finished.. heres the progress pics..

I made the racks. They are just standard 2" x 1" box section and the mesh is a 2" square reinforcing sheet and powder coated

Okay it has been a long time since I have posted anything up. That doesn't mean that I have been slacking, its just I have been doing a lot of small projects around the house.

First I started by running a small deck down the services side of the house to clean the area up.

After

Next Job was building a new BBQ area to which I am putting some opening louvers over the pergola. (this is a work in progress as its currently raining outside hence Im inside doing some updates)

I am currently boxing the steel up with wood (pending weather) so will post some more photos of the finished product soon.

I also decided that I need a steel bench for my garage and a wood working bench. After searching the net for various designs I decided to build what is called the Jack Bench. This bench basically uses two scissor jacks, one to raise and lower the bench and the other to lower a cart so the bench can be wheeled around the shop.
I am really happy with this unit as it is really heavy and solid but at the same time easy to shift around my limited space shop. I am still awaiting a twin screw vice for the end but this in due in in the next couple of weeks so it will be another project I can tick off.

The bench is basically a series of torsion boxes

[/IMG]

This are sandwiched between plywood
IMG_0905_zps80b25274.jpg
[/IMG]

Here is most of the bench ready to start assembly
IMG_0907_zps407c8963.jpg
[/IMG]

Its starts to come together now
This is the outer portion of the bench
IMG_0917_zps3d1e641a.jpg
[/IMG]

Putting the inner section of the bench together
IMG_0919_zps1c6b6dee.jpg
[/IMG]

All together now just have to laminate a top
IMG_0920_zps8158622a.jpg
[/IMG]

Top made and after several hours of hand planing I have this
IMG_0929_zpse7133d04.jpg
[/IMG]

Sides and trim laminated to top ready for vice
top_zps1e9fdfee.jpg
[/IMG]

I purchased an old record vice that I stripped and reconditioned
P1040768_zps89cf3400.jpg
[/IMG]

Now the finished product installed on the bench
IMG_0951_zps6e58f382.jpg
[/IMG]

And now one completed bench with a coat of protective oil (less the end vice that Im still waiting on)

Well I almost forgot the most important update of all

The last time I posted I was yet to line the ceiling. The good news is that is all now complete. I still have to Mud or Gib stop as its called in New Zealand.

I have also built and installed my new steel bench. I am going to do a little bit of rearranging. The fridge is going and am going to install another small green box which will house the drill press and grinder. And the shadow board which currently houses the wood working gear will have a sliding pegboard one in front which will have the common engineering tools. Will post pics when I get my **** into gear.

Ceiling all lined
IMG_0986_zps1cd8ad6d.jpg
[/IMG]
Lights in and also overhead reel power cords
IMG_1003_zpsdc8032e1.jpg
[/IMG]
My bench frame back from the powder coaters
IMG_0985_zpscb56a1df.jpg
[/IMG]

Steel top in place
IMG_1001_zps44308f67.jpg
[/IMG]
IMG_1002_zpscd1329fe.jpg
[/IMG]

In-between this I mad some galvanised posts to hold my espalier fruit trees

The garage is coming along great, I also love the idea of the unistrut to be able to move around support if you need to put something bigger up there, etc.

Two peas in a pod when you came with the wooden plank walkway along the house... I want to do the same when I get my place, from the front gate to the back gate, tie in with the lower ground level deck where my bbq will reside and tie into the man door of the garage. How lucky I am that my gf insists on me building a moderate 24x24 if not a bit bigger.

Okay I have been a bit slack, no Ive been totally useless. Just some small updates all to do with the outside area. Well I started to build the new BBQ area and then winter set in and I sort of lost all inspiration. Well the good new is that summer is here (I'm in New Zealand so or seasons are opposite to most of you folk on here).

I finished framing and cladding the outside steel pergola. This will house the automatic louver system, unfortunately these won't now be installed till after Christmas.

I just installed the outside sink and marble bench tops by the BBQ and installed the down lights. I have made a LARGE 18 seat table that has a metal frame and Oak top that will be back from the powder coaters on Monday, still to finish some of the granite paving, then its back in the workshop to continue.

I'm a Jaffa (Auckland) I've just got back from my yearly joint at SEMA, you are one of the many kiwis that are in the states building rods. Ive currently got a 68 camaro but am looking to build a 34 coupe as soon as I get my **** into gear and finish my garage

Probably going to SEMA next year. Give me a shout if you are going and I`ll buy you a beer. Also let me know when you are ready to start your Coupe project. I`m sure I could help it along a bit--maybe even source you a real steel starter...I know of a couple that could be had....parts too......

Finally got the Louvres fitted and so I have almost completed the outside BBQ area. Couldn't find an outside table that suited so ended up making one . The top is Oak but the legs and Frame are all powder coated steel it is really great but weighs a ton.

Okay so Ive been doing everything bar the Garage, so I thought I better get my **** into gear.

I have had an Old Fobco Drill press taking up room for ages so I stripped it down, changed one bearing and a new Quill spring, a new paint job and it was as good as new, Mounted it on a little drill stand and I was ready to party

This is what the press looked like to start with
IMG_1664_zps84bf2945.jpg

This is the after shots
IMG_1708_zps81971097.jpg

IMG_1709_zps21591d9c.jpg

Now it was time to tidy up the shoes. I made a shoe rack with a opening top section to house laces, polish etc still have to paint it the same colour as the walls

IMG_1710_zpsff9a2eb6.jpg

IMG_1712_zpsd181a886.jpg

Last task today was making a rack to house all the various G and Sash Clamps
IMG_1707_zpsbcb342aa.jpg

Im going to make another shadow board in front of the other which will be sliding suspended on the overhead shelves. This shadow board will be engineering tools , spanners pliers etc you will slide it out of the way to reveal the wood working board

The garage is great, the pergola is stunning! I made the mistake of showing the pergola to my wife--now she wants something similar and my building skills are not nearly what yours are....
