Actual list begins at Post #2, but some terms are defined below.

Common Asian is used to designate Chinese, Taiwanese, and/or maybe Indian which, as far as I can tell, are either identical or quite similar to what I typically see at:
HF
HD (except for the quick release)
Lowe's
TSC
and/or Sears (except for Craftsman Pro)

These styles seem to be copies of (old) US/English economy models plus the ubiquitous rotators. Their swivels don't positively lock as for example the way the Ken-Tool models do. Neither did most of the US/English economy models. Per Mohawk Dave at #29 below, Jiangsu (a Chinese company) makes the majority of the most common economy styles.

Mostly ComAs designates there is at least one additional size/style NOT usually seen at HF, HD, Lowe's, TSC, and Sears.

Of course Turkey is in Asia, but it's noted separately.

Recently decided I needed a new bench vise. Older used US made models seldom come up for sale around here. I decided to look at what's available new. Out of curiosity eventually looked at every brand I could find using mostly Google searches.
Found quite a few surprises.

I concentrated on general purpose bolt-on metalworking bench vises with at least 4 inch steel jaws such as:
machinist's vises
mechanic's vises
utility? vises (this is what some are called)
multi-purpose (rotating jaws) vises. I simply refer to these as 'rotators'.

To make the list, a brand had to have at least one vise like any of those in its line.

Was NOT looking for:
woodworking vises
milling machine (mill) vises
drill press vises
pipe vises
clamp-on style vises

Some of the below brands have one or more of this second group in their lineups but that's not the purpose of this list. Including drill press and mill vises, I actually did run into each of those listed as bench vises.

I read many of the vise threads on GJ as well as reading a lot elsewhere. By the way, an excellent thread by mjozefow: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=62716

Another excellent thread by Drivesitfar: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=252830

For the vises I was looking at, there are four types of metal for the main vise body parts:

Grey (gray) iron in either 20k, 25k, or 30k psi tensile strength.

Ductile iron in 60k or 65k psi tensile strength.

Cast steel type SC37. No psi rating given that I can recall.

Forged steel in 75k or 90k psi tensile strength.

The 90k psi rating is for some Asian vises. 90k psi Asian? That's what is claimed. :dunno: Turkey is in Asia and here's one:
http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/WESTWARD-Bench-Vise-24Z092?Pid=search

Only four remaining US manufacturers: Milwaukee; Reed; Wilton; and Yost. Of these, Milwaukee is the sole claimant that every one of their vises is completely US made. Reed's single high line of vises now appear to be rebranded Columbian Combo Pipe & Bench Vises made by Wilton who bought Columbian in the 1980s.

Canadian brands are Gray Tools and Westward. Both import their vises from several countries.

Technically the only Euopean makes are Gressel from Switzerland and Heuer from Germany by Brockhaus. If you want to count it, Ridgid vises are also made in Germany by Pettinghaus which Ridgid owns.

A sole Mexican make: Urrea.

Eclipse is an English brand, but the vises appear to be Asian.

As complete a list as I could get it; alphabetically by brand on the following pages.

Ace - Companion

Ace
Hardware http://www.acehardware.com/family/i...WARE&fbc=1&lmdn=Brand&fbn=Brands|ACE+HARDWARE

Common Asian. Their bottom-of-the-line Steel Grip (aka SteelGrip) is apparently a house brand.

The Adjustable Clamp Company see Pony

AFF - American Forge & Foundry http://www.affjaxx.com/shop-equipment-vises-c-15_21.html

The website offerings appear to be newer lines as what I saw on some retailer sites were painted blue and a bit different design. The newer lines are some weird shade of pink? and seem the same as corresponding Wilton Chinese lines.

Allied International see Pro-Grade

Alltrade http://www.alltradetools.com/catalo...y=desc&search_query=vise&submit_search=Search

Common Asian, but if you go to the website and click on "BRANDS" on the black bar, you will see a surprise in one of them.

American Forge & Foundry see AFF

American Forge Pro see Pro Forge

American Tool http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=bl_sr_hi/186-4759178-0548844?_encoding=UTF8&field-brandtextbin=American Tool&node=228013#/ref=sr_nr_n_1?rh=n:228013,p_4:American+Tool,n:!468240,n:328182011,n:551238,n:553150,n:553156&bbn=553150&ie=UTF8&qid=1356543992&rnid=553150

Common Asian. I found a 4 inch and a 5 inch on Amazon, but I couldn't find an importer. Maybe this brand is like Neiko Tools: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=127264

Astro Pneumatic http://www.astrotools.com/default.aspx?keyword=bench vise

Mostly ComAs. They do have a 5-1/2" reversible apparently the same as the Wilton 4500.

ATD http://atdtools.com/search.php?q=vise

Only two models listed. No pipe jaws. Large shelf or lip for the slide. The only make listed as 25k psi tensile strength. Different styling. Asian but not common.

Atlas http://www.gregsmithequipment.com/home?search=atlas bench vise

Indian. A 10 inch model is listed at 145 lbs. Mfr website: http://www.atlasmachinesindia.com/163_machinetools_bench_vice.html

Update: The above Greg Smith Equipment link shows no results now but the three vises listed then are still carried with NO name:
http://www.gregsmithequipment.com/10-Vise
http://www.gregsmithequipment.com/5-Vise
http://www.gregsmithequipment.com/6-Vise

So I don't know what GSE is doing and I don't know the status of Atlas in the US.

Babco http://www.thorsentoolco.com/babco.html

Common Asian. The Babco name is owned by whoever owns Thorsen. I could only find a retail reference on Amazon where two Babco models (Olympia part numbers) are listed as "by Olympia Tools" and "Currently unavailable". In comparing the pix between the Babco models and corresponding Olympia models, there seem to be only different markings - each was surely made by the same Chinese mfr.

Bessey http://www.besseytools.com/en/subca...600030023&ASIMOID_SC=000000000001d3d300030023

Sold by Lowe's. Chinese and seemed much like corresponding models at HD & HF.

BISON http://www.bison-bial.com/offer/vises
Polish made and now in USA: http://www.bison-america.com/catalogue-us

Black Steel aka S.G. Iron http://www.gregsmithequipment.com/home?search=Black Steel vise

Seems to be an Indian company. Lifetime warranty and one of the few brands billed as "GUARANTEED UNBREAKABLE!" or similar. S.G. Iron = Spheroidal Graphite Iron = Ductile Iron. Also have Offset and rotator models - 4 inch, 5 inch, and 6 inch in the rotators. They never actually state where their vises are made. Mfr's website: http://www.theglobalmerchants.com/tgm_products_vices.htm

Big Red see Torin

Brockhaus see Heuer

Canadian Tire see Mastercraft and MAXIMUM

Capri Tools http://www.capritools.com/product-category/bench-vises/

Three forged steel 90,000 PSI tensile strength (54,000 psi yield strength) 4",6", & 7" vises with swivels and lifetime warranties.
Two rotators, 5" & 6", ductile iron (60,000 psi), with 10 year warranties.
Definitely NOT common Asian according to spec's & warranties.

Columbian http://www.wiltontools.com/us/manufacturing/en/wilton/home.html

Old US brand/company. Now under Wilton (owned by Walter Meier) who apparently still makes true Columbians. At this writing, a search lists only heavy duty machinist's vises. I have seen evidence that Wilton has put the Columbian name on some economy line Chinese vises at times.

Companion http://www.sears.com/companion-4-in...No=1&blockType=G1&blockNo=1&blockType=G1#desc

Common Asian. I think this is a Sears house brand economy line.</o</o</o</o</o</o

Craftsman - Larin

Craftsman http://www.craftsman.com/search=ben...Hand+Tools_Vises,+Clamps+&+Stands_Bench+Vises

All 4 are Chinese and have a one year warranty. The standard C-man are Common Asian but the Craftsman Professional 4-1/2 in. Bench Vise is quite noteworthy and is well covered here: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=142872#post2188635

I really thought about buying this or a somewhat similar Yost (cheaper but only 30k psi grey iron). Only reason I didn't was they're only rated at 2-1/2 inch max clamping capacity.

UPDATE: Craftsman Professional was apparently dropped, then reinstated. Now seems hit-or-miss as to availability.

Dynamo http://www.dynamotools.com/product-category/vises/

These appear to be Chinese, though the biggest might be Indian (see Atlas). They are labeled mechanic's vises having anvils and swivels, but lack pipe jaws. They seem to be more the type we refer to as a machinist's vise, though the throats may not be as deep. There are 5", 6" and 10" models. The last reportedly weighs 145 Lbs.

Eclipse http://www.eclipsetoolsinc.com/

These seem to be Asian. They are labeled mechanic's vises but lack pipe jaws, anvils, and are stationary. They seem to be more the type we refer to as a machinist's vise. Swivel kits are listed on importer's site.

Gibraltar http://www.use-enco.com/1/1/93847-gibraltar-machinists-bench-vises-swivel-base-machinists-vises.html
and
http://www1.mscdirect.com/eCommerce/NavigationServlet/Clamping-Workholding-Positioning/Vises/Bench-Pipe-Vises/_/N-1z1261hZ77dg4?cm_re=Category-_-BodyLink-_-Bench+&+Pipe+Vises

I don't understand this brand. On the first link it appears to be, and is priced like, rebranded higher line Yost models. In the second, it seems to be rebranded lower (Asian) line Yost and/or Wilton models. Run a search for Gibraltar vise on Enco and you might get Wilton and Yost results.
If somebody wants to chase this down, more power to you. I'm tired of trying to figure it out.

UPDATE 14 Oct 14: Kudos to Leadberry at Post #72.

"I decided to do some digging on Gibraltar vises after coming across them on MSC and Enco and not being able to find any info anywhere.

The trademark for Gibraltar is owned by MSC. After contacting MSC customer service, they confirmed that Gibraltar is their house brand. They went on to say that the brand has multiple OEM's (they wouldn't name drop) and that most of the vises are imports.

I'm guessing at least one of the OEM's is Yost, since many of the Gibraltar bench vises are Yost designs and even use Yost stock photos. I don't know if the higher end ones are US-made or not."

Gray Tools http://www.graytools.com/toolcatalogue/?page=subcategory&name=Bench Vises&itemNo=65&s_filter=&recPage=9&startRow=1&pageNum=1

These seem to be available in Canada only. I didn't find anybody selling in or to the US. Originally I only wanted to list vise brands in the US, but there are so many Canadians on the board I made an exception.

Both lines are imports. The cast vises are from Argentina according to #6 here: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=156396 Special thanks to SkyMaster.

The forged vises look like they're from Turkey - some of the Kanca models: http://kanca.com.tr/Default.asp?Section=Product&Act=List&ID=2&CategoryID=6&GroupID=120&CatName=Kanex

Gressel http://www.gressel.ch/katalog/en/pr...werkstattausruestung-varianten-28-17--FR.html

Swiss made. Imported by Rotec Tools LTD. http://www.rotectools.com/files/Brochure Bench AX-PS 2012.pdf
Some are quite different from what I'm used to seeing.

Grizzly http://www.grizzly.com/products/category/590010

Common Asian.

Harbor Freight http://www.harborfreight.com/catalogsearch/result?q=bench+vise

Common Chinese.

Heuer http://www.samstagsales.com/brockhaus.htm

Mfd by Brockhaus in Germany. "Guaranteed Not to Break" Really different looking.
Thread: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=339145

Hit http://www.hittools.com/catalog/default.asp?parentid=106

Mostly ComAs. Japanese company but their vises look like so many others made in China or maybe Taiwan.

Husky http://www.homedepot.com/Husky/h_d1...keyword=bench+vise&storeId=10051#.UOZJvuTAfTp

Asian. Quick release. House brand for HD.

Interstate http://www.guardiancatalog.com/cate...t=13&cat=3144&show=40&page=1&brand=Interstate

Mostly ComAs. Apparently a house brand for Guardian and Enco/MSC. I did not find an importer.

Irwin http://es.irwin.com/uploads/products/brochure/495_2011-06-02-vises.pdf

Irwin (or Irwin's owners) bought Record, or at least the name. Appears they're all made in China now. Was not impressed with what I saw at Home Depot - only common style Chinese. Not necessarily bad; just not inspiring.

Jorgensen see Pony

K-Tool International http://www.ktoolinternational.com/PDFs/Equipment.pdf

Scroll down. Cast Steel. Asian. 10-year limited warranty.

Kaufhof http://www.toolorbit.com/Kaufhof_Vises-28_930.aspx

House Brand? imported by Tool Orbit. Common Asian.

Ken-Tool The catalog has more info though.

The vises are made in China, but I expect K-T requires higher quality control as K-T is the only one who shows how their swivel is solidly locked by "gear teeth". Also their jaws have V grooves for holding thin round stock. And their jaws can be reversed for smooth side use. The thing I noticed on the reversible vise is that in standard position, there is a shelf or lip for the slide to ride on.
My Wilton 4500 does not have this shelf although it appears to have been made in the same factory. Neither does it have reversible jaws. Does have the "gear teeth", but Wilton doesn't advertise that feature.

Klutch http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/category_hand-tools+vises-clamps+klutch

Yes I know not there. Klutch is a brand owned by Northern Tool & Equipment. The vises were recently discontinued. I suspect it was due to the price of each exceeding $200. They were reportedly made in Taiwan of 60k psi ductile iron. I listed this because if you happen to find one it should be a good vise.

Update: At replies 46 & 49, member peteco has gotten one of these and likes it. This link he provided states these are(were) made in China. I remember the original ad on the main Northern site stated Taiwan.

Update: Per #51, they were made in China.

Larin http://www.larincorp.com/ Website is lacking. Go here: http://www.tractorsupply.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/SearchDisplay?storeId=10151&catalogId=10051&langId=-1&pageSize=&beginIndex=0&searchSource=Q&sType=SimpleSearch&resultCatEntryType=2&showResultsPage=true&pageView=image&searchType=1000&cm_askwd=&autoSuggestURL=AutoSuggestView%3FcoreName%3DMC_10001_CatalogEntry_en_US%26serverURL%3Dhttp%253a%252f%252ftsc-prod-lb01.crossview.inc%253a3737%252fsolr%252fMC_10001_CatalogEntry_en_US%26catalogId%3D10051%26storeId%3D10151&searchTerm=larin+Bench+Vise

Common Asian. TSC does advertise a one year warranty. There is at least one GJ member who owns the "Heavy Duty" 6 inch model . Wish he would post regarding what kind of luck he's had with it.</o</o</o</o</o</o</o</o</o</o

Mac - Shop Iron

<hr style="color:#e5e5e5; background-color:#e5e5e5" size="1">Mac http://www.mactools.com/SearchResult...px?Search=vise
Seem to be Wilton-Chinese with maybe some lower end Wilton-US models.

Mastercraft http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/search...q=bench%20vise
Lower of two house brands for Canadian Tire.
Common Asian.

Masterforce
http://www.menards.com/main/search.h...rForce&ipp=100

Higher of two house brands for Menards. Mostly ComAs. Doublejaw Vise DJV55MMF looks identical to the Wilton 4500. See #16 here http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/s...d.php?t=180823

Matco http://www.matcotools.com/Catalog/se...ery=bench+vise
MV6B looks like Common Asian. Higher two are Ken-Tool models.

MAXIMUM http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/search...nchor=0579022P
Higher house brand for Canadian Tire. Quick adjusting 6" model, HITCH model, and a rotator. Asian.

Menards see Masterforce and Performax.

Milwaukee Tool & Equipment Company http://www.milwmal.com/home.htm
May be marked Milwaukee, Milwaukee Tool, Morgan, Morgan Milwaukee, or Star. Top of the line is only grey iron. Also a post model.

Mintcraft http://www.orgill.com/content/wws/introduction.htm
Common Asian. I think Orgill is the importer. Found a number of online retailers.

Morgan see Milwaukee

Neiko Tools http://www.toolleader.com/categories...ps-%252d-Vises
Also listed as PriMax brand. A 10 inch model is offered. Mostly ComAs. Neiko Tools are apparently imported by several retailers. http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/s...d.php?t=127264

Northern Industrial Tools http://www.northerntool.com/shop/too...dustrial-tools
Northern Tool & Equipment. Three of the four rotators appear stronger than the common light duty Chinese styles. The 6 inch is listed as weighing 82 lbs.; heaviest rotator I've found.

Olympia http://olympiatools.com/index.php?os...7176c&cPath=30
Mostly ComAs. A heavy duty (it looks it) rotator in addition to the light duty style. Also they market a Seber which has a quick release mechanism. There is a separate link under Seber for that maker/importer.

Palmgren http://www.palmgren.com/index.php?cPath=11
They only show one - a rotator style. It looks the same as the Yost model with the same kind of rotation lock at the rear.

Performance Tool http://www.wilmarcorp.com/items.aspx?cid=376
Common Asian. Bright yellow paint.

Performax http://www.menards.com/main/search.h...formax&ipp=100
Common Asian. The lower of two house brands for Menards (mailorder).

Pony Tools Inc. http://www.ponytools.com/index.php/pony/vises
Formerly The Adjustable Clamp Company, bench vises are branded Pony, but you may find NOS branded Jorgensen. Their "Professional Bench Vise With Swivel Base" line has the 'gearteeth' in the base to positively lock the swivel. http://old-store.ponytools.com/profe...ivelbases.aspx
Lower lines are Common Asian.

Powerfist http://www.princessauto.com/en/searc...pp=48&Ntt=vise
Lower house brand for Princess Auto. Asian but only one 6" and two 8" models listed.

PriMax see Neiko

Princess Auto see Powerfist and Pro.Point

Pro Forge
http://www.toolprice.com/category/be...steelbenchvise

Apparently a house brand at toolprice.com, along with Valley and American Forge Pro. Mostly ComAs. They do list an 8 inch model.

Pro-Grade http://www.alliedtools.com/products/...ng+tools/vises
Higher line of hand tools imported by Allied International. Common Asian except for a 7 inch model.

Pro.Point http://www.princessauto.com/en/searc...pp=48&Ntt=vise
Higher house brand for Princess Auto. Two Forged Steel Mechanic's Vises which appear Turkish (Kanca).

Record see Irwin

Reed http://www.reedmfgco.com/index.html?screen=vises
Lifetime warranty. Big old line vises replaced by one upper line identical to Wilton's Columbian Combo Pipe & Bench Vise line. A couple of economy lines apparently identical to certain Wilton Chinese lower and mid line vises.

Ridgid http://www.ridgid.com/Tools/F-Series-Vises
75k psi forged steel. German (Pettinghaus which Ridgid owns). Lifetime warranty.

S.G. Iron see Black Steel

Seber see Olympia
Seems to be marketed by Olympia but there is a maker (importer?) here http://www.seberdesigngroup.com/page3/page3.html

Shop Fox http://www.woodstockint.com/search/s...91729864943773
House brand for Woodstock International, Inc. Common Asian but Woodstock states they have their own QC people overseeing production.

Shop Iron see Titan
Titan's higher line.

Snap-on - Yost

Snap-on http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/catal...e=snapon-store

Snap-on has some forged steel vises under the Blue Point name which are made in Spain. They also have a lower line of Spanish vises. Their other vise lines are either Wilton-Chinese or Wilton-US except for their Mechanic's vises which have the Snap-on label and are listed as US made.

Stanley

As of 28 May 13, their website only lists a clamp on style vise. http://www.stanleytools.com/default.asp?TYPE=CATEGORY&CATEGORY=V No more bolt-ons except you may find NOS for sale at some retailers.

Star see Milwaukee

Starrett Scroll down here: http://www.nolansupply.com/superth.asp?supercategory=Vises+-+Bench+Vises

Starrett no longer makes bench vises. I accidentally found these listed at Nolan Supply aka National Supply Source. Also some listed here: http://shopatcdirect.com/bysubcategory.asp?category=Toolholding/Workholding&supercategory=Vises+-+Bench+Vises&subcategory=Starrett+Utility+Vises&type=False&specs=True
with thanks to HandsomeDan at #27 below. Did not check to see if these are still available as NOS.

Steel Grip aka SteelGrip see Ace

Tekton http://www.tektontools.com/All_Tools/Clamps_Vises/Vises

These are Chinese, but in addition to their 4" and 6" vises, they now offer two different 8" models, the higher of which is reportedly 60k psi.

I found one particularly impressive thing about Tekton: a specific offer of customer service here on the 2nd comment

Thorsen see Babco

Titan http://www.titan-us.com/products/SHOP EQUIPMENT/VISES.aspx

Common Asian.

Torin http://www.torinjacks.com/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=20

Common Asian Rotator. "12 ton capacity" Aka Big Red brand.

TTC http://www.travers.com/skulist.asp?r=s&n=||Hand+&+Power+Tools||Vises-Bench||AttribSelect=Brand='TTC'&q=block+id+85139+and+class+level3+id+28917

Mostly ComAs but no pipe jaws. House brand/label for Travers Tool Co.

TUV see Wholesale Tool

Urrea http://www.urrea.com/us/Pullers_vises/Index.html?pageNumber=16

Mexican. They have really heavy vises: 4 in - 46.3 lbs, 5 in - 71.7 lbs, 6 in - 98.1 lbs and opens to 7-1/2 in, 7 in - 127.9 lbs and opens to 10 inches.

I think the company website is wrong because for example, here on page 20 http://mdmetric.com/prod/upt/490-511.pdf the sizes are listed as 4 in, 6 in, 7-1/2 in, and 10 in which makes more sense and matches some other retailers' sites.

Valley see Pro Forge

Walter Meier see Wilton

Walter Meier owns Wilton/Columbian and some retailers list "Walter Meier" as a brand instead of Wilton.

Wel-Bilt http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/category_hand-tools+vises-clamps+bench-vises+wel-bilt

Common Asian. House brand for Northern Tool & Equipment. Not related to WELBILT® products of Enodis companies.

Westward http://www.westwardtools.ca

Canadian but there are US retailers. In fact the catalog on Westward's site is out of date and not easy to use. To get good info, I had to go to Grainger http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/bench-vises/vises/hand-tools/westward/ecatalog/N-c35Z1z13lco?Ndr=basedimid10071&Ns=List+Price|1&itemsPerPage=60&sst=subset.

All are imports. Big Three plus Turkey. In fact the Turkish vises are forged steel and rated at 90k psi tensile strength!

There are even some Taiwanese forged steel and rated at 90k psi!

Some of the cast Taiwanese models are rated at 60k psi. 60k is believeable for the ductile iron models but is hard to believe for the cast steel models.

There is also at least one offset Indian vise and a Chinese reversible mechanic's vise like my 5-1/2 inch Wilton 4500 probably made in the same factory. The rest are Mostly ComAs.

If anybody is interested in a Westward, shop around. You might find a better deal.

Wholesale Tool http://tool.wttool.com/search?p=Q&lbc=wttool&uid=608283988&ts=custom&w=bench vise&isort=price rev&method=and&view=grid&stateid=s1A21B11A2Bf9qGys0&modaf=r:br:import

They have some Asian imports. One is a Common Asian line. Another labeled TUV is a so called "Quick Action" whatever that means. In a drop forged line they have an 8 inch model. The name "Wholesale Tool" probably does not appear on the vises but I didn't have a better way to designate them.

Wilmar see Performance Tool

Wilton http://www.wiltontools.com/us/manufacturing/en/wilton/home.html

No intro needed here. US and also Asian economy lines. Lifetime warranty. I can state the Chinese made Wilton 5-1/2 inch reversible mechanic's vise model 4500 I have is excellent for the money. Not necessarily best quality, but truly excellent nonetheless.

Xact Scroll way down here: http://www.nolansupply.com/superth.asp?supercategory=Vises+-+Bench+Vises

I accidentally found these at Nolan Supply aka National Supply Source. Could not find a Xact website. No COO given but they appear to be Common Asian. Probably a house brand for Nolan.

Yost http://www.yostvises.com/

No intro needed here either. US and also Asian economy lines. They have the best website.

Note: In addition to their light duty grey iron Model 750 rotator, Yost now has a heavy duty ductile iron Model 750-DI: http://www.yostvises.com/specialty-...bination-pipe-and-bench-vise-swivel-base.html

This 750-DI was the only rotator I've found made from ductile iron which should be much stronger than any of the grey iron rotators in this weight class. Initial report at posts 6 & 8 here: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=200929

Now Capri Tools also lists their own rotators as being DI.

Re: Current Bench Vise Brands Available New in US and/or Canada

Thanks much for the compliments gentlemen. Kept all the links from when I was looking at vises, so thought someone else might benefit. Spent an awful lot of time on this. Had more comments but was afraid admin might consider this too long.

If I need to correct something, please let me know.

Re: Current Bench Vise Brands Available New in US and/or Canada

Thanks Ivp. You make 3 people who found this list useful.

I do hope some folks benefit from what many might consider to be a waste of time.

I even update the list when I run into new info.

Wished I'd had a list like this when I started looking.

That's why I bumped it up.

I made a list too. It's of all the best vise manufacturers. It took me hours to compile.

Guess you can call my list "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly". :bounce:

I like Clint Eastwood movies.

As to sticky or not to sticky, I have no idea what the criteria is. Do the mods decide based on requests? :dunno:

Please keep in mind there currently is one exception (bottom of the line) as to the parts COO.

I haven't checked their website lately. I really can't afford a brand new one anyway. I have about ten or so that I got used.

Re: Current Bench Vise Brands Available New in US and/or Canada

Thanks for putting your time/effort into this list.
I'm restoring two older vises, but in the meantime, I think i maybe buy one of the Milwaukee 5" workshop vises or the Starret 5" Utility vise.
They both look like some of the china/asian-made vises, even though I've read that they're both USA made.

http://shopatcdirect.com/bysubcateg...=Starrett+Utility+Vises&type=False&specs=True

This site says the Starrett's COO is USA

Re: Current Bench Vise Brands Available New in US and/or Canada

Since this thread is getting some attention, I emailed Starrett asking about their vises which don't appear on their site. Will post next week when/if I get a reply.

Yes both makes appear Asian but please keep in mind most Asian vises are copies of former US and English models.

Re: Current Bench Vise Brands Available New in US and/or Canada

AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME!!! Thank you! I have been saving and labeling every different vise from "The VISES of Garage Journal". I'm on pg 36 of 359 and have 419 photos so far. All labeled (if given, or I looked it up) by name, size, weight, etc. So that will be roughly 4k photos when done, plus other photos in other threads. I just don't know how to share it with all you other than literally snail mail a flash drive. I think GOOGLE DRIVE would work for this. (I.T. guys out there know?)

Also btw, some info you can add to the makers of some/all? Irwins and Records.

Here's the link for the maker, Jiangsu Swordfish Bench Vise Co., Ltd...the biggest vise maker in the world. You can see they make Records and also Irwins. And the Records do not say "Made in". Sorry, I was just researching for myself and found this thread.

http://jsjanyu.en.alibaba.com/

And here's the link for the Records they make. http://jsjanyu.en.alibaba.com/produc...3_1003_4_.html

Thanks MD. I gave you credit at the end of the "Common Asian" definition in Post #1.

No worries bro. It's great to have all the info we have on GJ. So much history has been lost, so every little bit, past or present, helps.

And those BLACK STEEL vises are really cool. FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION for sure. I want to build one now. Thanks again!

Re: Current Bench Vise Brands Available New in US and/or Canada

Denise at Starrett emailed me to state they no longer make bench vises and recommended Yost. I have updated Starrett on the list.

Re: Current Bench Vise Brands Available New in US and/or Canada

Great info Dave, thanks so much for taking the time to compile this huge resource. Without clicking on every link, did your research reveal any companies making the behemoth vices that we have been drooling over on the other threads?

I would of course love to find one of the old world giants for my shop, that and a massive anvil that would tilt my backhoe!! But in the absence of such a find it would be cool if someone out there still made massive vice.

Again thanks for your efforts,

Re: Current Bench Vise Brands Available New in US and/or Canada

I do appreciate the kind words, Flip. I only concentrated on what is commercially available new on the 'Net in US & Canada. If by behemoth, you mean 12 inch or greater opening AND 5 inch or better throat depth, only Wilton, Yost, and Milwaukee list vises meeting both those criteria. Happened to find this company also lists one, http://www.atlasmachinesindia.com/163_machinetools_bench_vice.html, as a Precision Tool Maker's Bench Vice, but Greg Smith Equipment has no plans to import it.

There have been some big recent imports as Jack Olsen has one in post #283 here http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/s...journal&page=8, but I never found one for sale. Don't know whether it meets the 5" depth req't.

Oh, Yost lists a 10" http://www.yostvises.com/utility-vi...ty-combination-pipe-and-bench-vise-black.html, but they state it only opens to 10". It doesn't meet the 5" depth either.

Now if you can live with a little less than minimum 12" opening and minimum 5" throat, these reversible vises are available:

http://www.yostvises.com/mechanics-vises/multi-purpose-reversible-combination-vise.html

http://www.wiltontools.com/en/dyn_o...ilton&appendix=_wilton&navigation.language=en

http://www.kentool.com/ Towards lower left corner, click on "download" and scroll to page 22.

If you go down to 5-1/2" jaws, there are also Menard's and Westward, which appear to be the same mfr as the Wiltons.

Greg Smith Equipment has a 10" Jaws Atlas conventional and of course the four US mfrs have conventionals of less than 12"Open&5"TD. The rest are 8" or less jaws, IIRC.

Don't be put off by the MSRP. After I got my 5-1/2" Wilton-Chinese 4500 reversible, I happened to run into a 6-1/2" Ken-Tool for only $35 more and later a 6-1/2" Yost on sale for $275 shipped!

If a 5-1/2" reversible will do and you don't mind grey iron as opposed to ductile iron or forged steel (and no lifetime warranty like Wilton), then the Menard's is probably a best buy.

So how do you define a 'behemoth vise'?

Dave,
I'm not even in the market for a vise and found this thread fascinating. Thanks for the time you put into it. I'm sure it must have taken hours.

And thank the lord that I inherited an old Prentiss Bulldog that's had a cracked slide for decades that doesn't effect it a whit and is an awesome vise. And, I've bought several old vises over the past few years made with old American iron but they were all small. Even in this area (Northern Illinois) where I frequent estate sales selling tools twice a month I just don't see any big vises. I'm sorry you had to buy one made in China.

I'm going to have to buy a new vice...down to Yost and Reed and Morgan...thinking 5" or 6" machinists, if I can get a deal, I would rather have a 6"...

HMMM...decisions - decisions - decisions...

I'm almost sure Yost made the last of the Starretts. They were available as late as 5 years ago. Reed is no longer. All the Reed up scale USA made vises are made by Columbian in Warren Ohio. Its a 2 man shop and they fish most of the time. LOL!!!
