60/84/88 ratchet repair kits

Hey there,

As we all know matco/gearwrench/armstrong ratchets that have the 60 tooth kits can be swapped out for the 88 tooth kit and vice versa. I have done this before switching from 60 to 88 and 88 down to 60.

Well I placed an order from tooltopia for a gearwrench ratchet kit 60 tooth for my matco 3/8" BFR8TG which is a 60 tooth ratchet

I ordered (2) 81227 kits (60 tooth) and received them only to notice that they were actually a 81227F kit (84 teeth)

I was going to call tooltopia tomorrow, but decided to see if a 84 tooth kit would fit in a 60 tooth ratchet.

Surely enough it did and works :rocker:

In conlcusion 60/84/88 should be interchangeable

If you want to go from 60 to 88 you can and from 60 to 84

I can only prove this for the 3/8" drive ratchet

84 tooth ratchets are craftsman premium and newer gearwrench
88 tooth ratchet are newer armstrong and matco
60 tooth ratchets are older armstrong, matco, and gearwrench

Included is 2 pushers and 2 springs ( I only used 1 of each)

half my order got cancelled. called them and was told the item is OOS and discontinued. uh-oh... I wonder if the OP got lucky or if they will ship me the 84t kit too?

I ordered the 81227 kit which is 60 tooth, but got 81227F kits

I paid 5.31 per kit

Now on tooltopia, they got the 81227F but is $15 a kit

Does the kit come with the selector lever? I was given a 60 tooth Gearwrench that my Stepfather found in the road in front of his house. The only issue is that the selector lever is buggered up from being bounced around by cars driving by. I was thinking the higher tooth count up grade would kill 2 birds with one stone.

The problem is that the new ratchet is $31 from Amazon:

At $15 per kit plus $8 shipping it just seems like a better deal to get the whole ratchet :-(

You're lucky. I just received the 1/2" drive repair kit from Gearwrench for warranty purposes and it was the 60-tooth design.

Thanks for pointing out the Amazon link. That's not bad, $25 shipped for 2 kits then I have a spare 84 tooth kit and the original 60 tooth. I now have a MATCO 88 so I would have something until I could track down a truck if I broke the MATCO.

Calling Matco will get you one in short order as well. ToolTopia's shipping can negate any sort of deal unless you combine it with more items. I do love ToolTopia but I find myself holding out for large orders.

in case anyone was thinking about it, the 120XP dual stack pawl system will NOT fit into the older 60/84/88 teeth ratchets. i just opened up my 120XP and 60t ratchet and the 120XP gear is taller than the 60t gear so you won't be able to put the cover back on.

yup, I have 84 tooth kits in my Armstrong locking flex ratchets. I need to call matco for an 88 tooth 1/2 drive, for my new Armstrong aerospace ratchet.

Personally I use superlube in these ratchets and they run smooth and quiet. If you put too much it skips sometimes.

received my stuff today.... the 3/8" kits were all 84t kits, while the 1/4" kits were all 60t kits. I'm going to return the 1/4" kits. Just upgraded 5 of my 3/8" ratchets... wish I was able to get more though...

I also used superlube and it seems to work really well. hint about using superlube.. i only put the lube on the teeth of the gears and pawl. be careful about getting too much lube on the bottom of the pawl or it might stick. i also put lube where the pusher contacts the pawl. i also lube all the O-rings. putting a healthy amount of lube on the gear teeth makes it feel about as smooth as my Snap-On dual 80 ratchets.

to the OP, that second pusher pin + spring goes under the selector switch inside the handle of the ratchet. if you open it up, you'll see a hole for the 2nd pusher. I think at the factory they sometimes forget to put the 2nd pusher in... 2 out of the 5 ratchets i upgraded tonight were missing the 2nd pusher/spring under the selector switch. i don't think it's critical to operate, but i think it helps keep the selector switch in place and not jump out of position.

i may just order the 1/4" kit from amazon instead... wish i could find a good deal on the 1/2" kits though... have a few of those too.

I just got 2 of the 81227F from the Amazon deal. I ended up going with the non super saver shipping deal, but they discounted shipping after the first one so 2 shipped was $25. I should have saved more by getting a third one but just couldn't justify having another sit around. One kit is going to just be used as back up the other is going into the Gearwrench with the 60 tooth gear.

hey guys... just FYI, I found one kit today where they didn't machine the socket adapter part correctly and my socket wouldn't fit. it was 6.40mm instead of 6.36mm and that was enough that none of my sockets would fit over it.

i'm mentioning this to you guys because some of you indicated you were keeping a set for "backup" or otherwise not using it immediately... i recommend you at least take the center gear out and put a socket on it and make sure it fits and comes off easily. if you have a problem then at least you can take care of it now with the retailer/vendor you used instead of a year later where you'd be SOL.

fortunately, it was through Amazon for me on the 1/4" kits. they are overnighting another kit to me and already gave me return shipping label. too bad though.. seems like such a waste to ship such a small item by itself.

Thanks for that update. I will have to take them both out and try most all the parts to make sure

I tried out both kits they work fine. Really nice and blow the 60 tooth Craftsman thin profile away now. With that stupid handle design I think I will only use that thin profile as a last resort.

I got to thinking about the idea of what happens if you don't open the kit for a year. That really means there is no real warranty on the ratchet anymore. Guess if I break the 84 tooth I can always swap the buggered selector back in, go to Fastenal and have them swap it out for a 60 tooth ratchet again. Maybe I will be lucky and by that time they will not have the 60 tooth anymore and have to upgrade it to the 84 tooth anyway

found another 1/4" kit that wasn't machined correctly and wouldn't fit the sockets. appears there might be a higher defect rate on the 1/4" kits...

Bringing back the dead here. I couldn't find a definite answer on whether or not this works in the 1/2" ratchets. Can anyone confirm it works for 1/2" and 1/4" as well?

As long as it's not a 120XP, which is different, all the 60/84/88 tooth ratchets will interchange kits regardless of drive size.

I am aware that this is a bit of a revival, but does this cross over to the "thin profile/low profile" Craftsman ratchets as well?

I wouldn't complain about upgraded ratchets/pawls in my sets. I have been playing with the search feature on GJ and am struggling to isolate what I am looking for.

The Professional series 84 tooth ratchets that were made is the USA?
Yes,the anvils,pawls,selectors will interchange,but could vary in appearance.
The cover plates will differ,because the Craftsman is a steel plate with cover screws and the others use a stamped plate held in by a snap ring.
