Ya I don't plan do get it done until next spring - but what fun to do! The plan is for a 22x 30 wood shop in the one end with storage over head.

So - time flies when your having fun - I have started on the wood shop portion and have mounted two glue lam beams that are longer (about 36") than I needed (price was right). I am contemplting where to cut them off. I could just trim them flush and cover with the OSB, or someone suggisted I leave ?? for a landing in front of the storage area, STURDY shelf supports?

You comments and suggistions are solicited.

Nice. Those beams are killer. I'd leave them. Landing is a good idea. Or a big HD shelf. Or you might put an anchor point for a hoist/block and tackle there.
Add a cross beam and many other cool things could be done with them..

It partially depends on what you are doing with the upstairs. If the upstairs is an office type area make a little deck with a couple of chairs for a place for a cup of coffee. If the upstairs is a major storage area you could put in a Hoist and use the deck for loading materials into your overhead storage...

It is pretty much going to be storage - if you look close there is an I beam with plans for carriage and hoist.

Thanks

I went back and looked and see a big I-Beam roughly centered between the beams and up next to the roof. I'm not sure what I would do with the laminated beams but I think that I would leave the large opening to make it easier to put sheet stock up there.

I still think it would be pretty neat to make a deck up there and do something interesting with it. Too bad I can't think of anything at the moment. I'm sure that some of the guys on this forum will come up with some good ideas....

Yep - they are recycled from a firm that does demolishing of bldgs. as is the steel I beam up above. The glue lams are 7 1/4 x 16 1/2 x 24.

I would definately go with a deck/landing there. It looks that you are on a farm with a forklift? then the deck makes using the forklift very easy. It is similar to what I have and the railing you see at the top of my stairs is quick removable when I need to lift stuff up into the loft. Your probably within 15 miles of me.

no neat sig line

So after some gentle proding from Drives here are some updates to my build.

Starting with a Google view and then the beams arrive and get cleaned up.

BEAR: you've been busy. looks great. just one question how is the huge steel beam supported because it doesn't look like it is supported on the end that you are showing in your new storage area?

also how the heck did you lift it up there or do you have a huge fork lift.

WELL DONE SIR!!

thanks for updating your thread and showing us how to modify our pole buildings.

Soo - the beam is supported w/ a 1/2" plate on top[ of the truss w/4 1/2" bolts through the flange. Probably not the very strongest of methods but is sufficent for any thing I want to lift.
