Shots of the radiant layout. Notice the insulation underneath, 1.5" closed cell spray foam.

I had 2 zones for my heat (garage has 2 loops, house has 1), both are thermostat controlled (air temp).

Total 1/2" barrier pex used ~ 2,200'

The concrete is 4" thick in the living area and 5" in the garage. Went with fiber reinforced concrete and no rebar.

pad was just a fuzz under 40 yds3, formed up a little stoop for my side door roughly 5x3

Shot of the spray foam being started. (~2.5" closed cell on the entire shell of the building) It's about r20

And pics of my progress on first floor framing.

First buckeye game screen.. 16'x9' 1080i.

As i'm sure your all wondering how i'm heating this monster.. well it's a radiant system as can be seen in the pictures.. i've been using a smart 80 gal water tank.. yes, yes, i know.. it's not enough.. this was just to get the ball rolling and to keep it warm.. which in all honesty it has been doing so quite well.. 62 deg in the barn and nearly 66 in the house.. except with the "smart" water heater thinks its killing an element after 24 hrs+ of continuous use.. it'll shut down an element.. so just for all you haters out there.. if you insulate to the teeth as i have you can heat a large area with a water tank.. that being said my electric bill is going to be near $400 this month and we haven't moved in yet.. so i purchased a used 75,000 btu outdoor wood burner yesterday off CL and will be installing it this weekend.. i think this should take the chill out of the air.. has anyone done something similar with their radiant system???

LOL, I might say. The neighbor had an addition put on to his house this summer. He got a little aggravated when the contractor started to work on a pole bldg and not his place. Low and behold, I know where he was working now. :lol_hitti United do the concrete too ?

Little photo editor download and wa..la.. problems solved..

Rest of the insulation shots.. as was said, 2.5-3" closed cell spray foam on the entire shell of the building, 1.5" closed cell sprayed under fhe slab for the radiant heat, then r13 in the dividing wall of the house and garage, and just added 900 sq ft of r30 on the ceiling of the house part.. warm... very warm.. literally think I can heat this place with 2 candles... triple wickers though... haha

Paint color of the upstairs living area. ..
And a quick shot of my first attempt of heating this monstrosity. . Which is working! Haters!

:lol_hitti

You have a nice place there, I might have to drive by one day and check it out.

Sure thing.. I'm nearing completion Finally... still have to set up my garage area and figure out my work / wood shop. And how to secure all of my pallet racking to the end wall..

I'm in the settlement, near the big church just off rt 61.. hard to miss.

That looks like a great shop.

I am not familiar with foam, what's the R value per inch?

Subscribed!

Here's a good site for spray foam. I ran roughly 2.5 inches of closed cell on my entire shell of the building. After 1.5 inches the closed cell is a complete vapor barrier.. so nill on the air movement. . ;)

http://www.greenbuildingadvisor.com/green-basics/spray-foam-insulation-open-and-closed-cell

It's rated around 7 r value usually so 7x2.5 is apprx 17.5 r value.. some spots are even thicker ~3-4"

Ive also added extra r13 in the walls of the living area and r30 on top of the ceiling. It's overkill to say the least, but insulation is cheap compared to heat bills. . Well not with my new addition on Saturday. . Tying in a 75,000 btu outdoor wood burner with water temp sensor and blower, this will kill about $300 a month off my electric bill in trade for a few days in the summer splitting wood.

Again.. I'm still looking for someone else who's tied a wood boiler into their radiant system. . I can't be the first. .:willy_nil

Got my wood burner hooked into my radiant system today.. with the help of the zoom boom and some crappy weather it really only dragged out to about 2 hours by the time I got it to my place.. I'll get some pictures up shortly..

First I drilled to new holes through my bottom grade board of the building. Had to remove a ton of foam to do this with my hole saw only being able to cut 2".
Once I had my holes located I dug my trench approximately 18-24" deep.. I really could care less about the frost line because of how well I was insulating, as you'll see..
So I bought 12 big cans of the crack and gap foam from menards that use the pro gun. These work awesome for the first 1/3 of the can and then slow way down.. the key to keeping a good continuous cell is dont let it worm out like play dough.. stick the end of the gun into the foam thats being released.. this keeps it as one continuous glob..
I layed down my first patch that's about 8" wide and 15' long. I then went back and made sides for the pipe to lay in between.. kinda like a giant intestinal c-channel. I then used 4" drainage tile at my ends and slid my pipe though these and then filled the entire pipe with the foam..
Then came the top layer... all in all I only used 9 cans of the foam.. which is about $140.
I then connected all my 1" lines as a full loop. Off this I tapped into my current system with ball valves for the ability to use either electric or wood.
Next step.. pick up my wood burner.. :3gears:

Today was the big day.. not only did we get about an inch of snow last night, but also it decided to sleet most of the night as well.. thank goodness by 11am things had gotten better on the road end of my journey. Well outta work early and off to grab the gooseneck and the zoom boom. Now mind you the 35' trailer weighs about 6k+ and the zb pushes 22k... so I'm really still a little hesitant to make the 20 mile trek to pick up another 1600lbs of wood burner to add to this rolling mass.. but.. no choice.. it's dropping to 19 as a high next week..
Make it there no sweat.. minus forgetting to remove my cold fronts in my grill before the trip... the old cummins was pushing red in the heat about 3 miles up road thats mostlg stop signs and rolling hills. So stopped poppped them out and jumped on rt30 . She cooled right back down.. unload... pick it up like it was a paperweight with the zb and head home..
Get everything unloaded and get out my saw and cut 2-2x10s 5' each to help disperse the load on the top soil out back. (Will be pouring the concrete pad next spring). Get the boards level and spaced then add 4" concrete blocks under each leg..
Once the boiler is set I get the hose running.. it needs 108 gallons to fill this puppy (another reason for the wood under the legs, total weight now ~ 2500lbs) hose running I get a hole popped for my 14-2 direct bury wire and get juice hooked up.. added an outdoor switch to kill power to the pump only in case I ever need to replace the pump.
About 25 minutes later she's full and the fire is lit.. took about 2.5 hrs to get the water temp up to 170 degs from 68. Building is now 66 deg in thegarage and a cool 70 in the house half..

Whew.. thumbs are hurting... (typing on my phone this whole time laying in bed.. ps.. my dogs are snoring. .) :eyecrazy:

Yep, I think that's who it is.

That's going to be nice once that is all hooked up and you're burning wood to keep the place warm.

I hope. I've been keeping track of my electric meter usage the last 3 weeks.. I took another reading tonight after the water tank was shut off.. we'll see how we look in a week.. calculate my savings. See how long it'll take to pay off my sweet CL find. :D

LOL, my ******* was looking south off 30. I just checked out Google maps and I realize that you are closer than I thought going the back way. My step-brother (who is still in the USCG) just bought a place over on German Rd, just east of Loss Creek. That puts him half way between us.

Well this morning I went out to the building... AND IT'S 65 IN THE GARAGE AND 72 IN THE HOUSE!! AND THE WOOD BURNER WAS STILL BURNING!!! :scared:

I think I'm going to be ok.. especially since it's a brisk 19 degs out at the moment.

So I stuffed the box about 2/3 of wood again (6-7 good sized pieces) and shut the door.. the blower was off and I noticed that the water temp was still at 164 degs.. :shocking: this means that the pile of coals alone was keeping the water hot enough.. :spit:

I'll definetly be spending some of the day today (before the Buckeye game of course) getting some wood chopped up.. I can't believe this thing works so well and lasted all night.. granted I had it filled up at 9 last night.. I'm also only using a mix of maple and some oak.. I'll be chopping up some ash today.. the woods behind me is owned by my wife's grandmother, and it was logged of all the ash this year.. so there is literally tons of tops and perfect sized wood to be chopped up. sounds like a good workout for the old Mule and the off-road yard cart.

I'm so pumped about this!!! :bounce:

What kind of antifreeze did you use in the system?

I have a water heated garage and it is SOOOO nice to work in the heat.

I actually didn't. . Don't plan to ever let it freeze. Plus it's mad pricey. .

As for the heat. . Goodness. . Pull my truck in. . It melts off and then the concrete dries up in like half an hour. And its 70 degs to the touch. . AMAZING!

what if you lose power ? wont the pex crack with just water since you will not be able to circulate water ?

Mike mike mike... I live in the country. . I have a generator. ..

Also.. future plans include a self sufficient propane generator that can supply enough power for the entire building and future house.. but thats big $$$ add that to the 5 year plan.. list is getting long..

So, it sounds like you can stoke it once a day and it will keep the temp overnight till the next day? That's pretty amazing!

You should be stoked! Almost free heat? Excellent!
