So, it sounds like you can stoke it once a day and it will keep the temp overnight till the next day? That's pretty amazing!

You should be stoked! Almost free heat? Excellent!

well, I wouldn't quite say that yet. I still don't know how long a whole load lasts because the first load was basically burned up getting the water up to 170 degrees for the first time. Now that I've got a full load in it now that I just loaded at 11 a.m. I'll see how long it lasts and when the temperature drops finally in that system. I'll keep everyone posted don't you worry

Well 630 I had to head home and get ready for the buckeye game.. water temp was still at 165 blower was off.. still had a great bed of coals and a few scabs of wood left.. I'm guess is got at least a coupke hours keft.. but just in case I get a little tipsy during the buckeye game I've filled her up again. I'll probably come out after half time and add a few pieces to make it through the night. Its supposed to get down to 10 tonight I belive.. burr chilly.. anyways on the bright side.. its 68 in the garage and 72 in the house.. so all I really gotta say is **** it water heater... see ya pizza!

Ps.. whoever invented radiant heat and outdoor wood boilers. ..

What did the spray foam insullation guy say, when you added fiberglass insullation to your ceiling? My guy said that I had to remove the blown isullation from my ceiling, once I get my rafters sprayed.

Glad to hear it's working alright for you. Do you have plans to build a shed around it, so you can stoke and clean it out of the weather ?

He said that I needed to insulate the ceiling if I'm spraying the actual roof. He suggested celulose.. I just went with unfaced r30 that menards had on huge sale a couple of weeks ago with a big rebate.. saved almost half.. that doesnt make any sense to me .. maybe if your spraying your roof line with closed cell you might develope some air exchange problems and thats what hes talking about.. I'd have to know more of the situation to really chime in.

dam, nice, at first glance I thought that was sand. never seen it done that way, pretty neat. U have any idea what the cost was for insulation for the floor.

I actually was only the second person the spray foam company had ever done this for.. first was my neighbor up the road about 2 weeks before me. Its nice as you can see in the picture they spray right up the walls and make a complete moisture / vapor barrier under your concrete..
The closed cell is roughly $1 per sq ft per inch thickness... so 45x60x1.5=$4050.. the 250 - 2" foam board is what $37 a sheet? So 2700÷32=85 sheets. Hence 85x$37=$3145. but. Its not a vapor barrier and breaks very easily when stepped on, let alone the concrete buggy trekking all over it.. its psi rating is also only 25.. the closed cell foam is rated at 33 psi at an inch and a half.. PLUS I didn't have to do a thing to put it down but watch. So $1.50 a ft2 compared to $1.17 ft2 plus all the fuel going to get the foam board and laying it down and tape etc... nope... plus I can lay card board on my concrete all winter and it won't wick moisture up under it.. which is nice if your storing classic cars or campers, less rust..

Well going into my 4th day burning wood now. This morning I went out to check on the burner and she still have a few big pieces of wood left in it.. I filled it last night at 9.
So. Went in the garage, 70° , house was almost 73°. I'm in ♥ with this thing..

Next step will be installing a water jacket for my domestic hot water.. been doing sone research online. Anyone know someone who has one or built one?

Anywho... heres a couple pics of how messy my garage is with the construction underway. . Hopefully I'll be getting cabinets set this week maybe in the kitchen. . That'll clear up some room for sure.

Let me know what you think.. I've got all kinds of ideas for this space.. I'll have to have a whole couple posts just about all my CL and scrap yard finds..

Ps.. speaking of CL finds. Check out my 1895 Mosler safe I just picked up for $50! It works too! :willy_nil

The safe is cool as heck, great find.

You're right, the garage is a mess but if you consider what you're doing and what's going on, I think it looks pretty damn good.

The carpet is finally scheduled to be installed on Wednesday next week.. (wife happy)
And of course the dogs were hard at work tonight as can be observed here in the candid shot taken..

Ooooo also here's a shot from my T8 LED conversion thread :shocking: (link below) these babies kick some serious ****.. the picture is one of my dual banks laying on its back point up at the trusses which are 17'.. pitch black out with no other lights on.. pretty impressive.

Well I totally neglected to get any pictures before I left today.. but here's an update anyways..

The wife went on a little trip to D.C. yesterday morning (her brothers bday @ Walter Reed) and doesnt get home until later tonight, so I've been juggling the girls between grandparents and aunts and uncles for the last 2 days to try and get some work done at the HARN.
I made it to Menards last nigbt and got my counter tops ordered.. (custom piece for the island thing... 3 WEEKS TO GET IT! F*@K $ H! T %@#?& ) ahem... but it's now ordered.. looks like I'll be settling the sink in a piece of 3/4 plywood till that **** shows up... my carpet is scheduled to be installed on Wednesday morning this week so that is nice.
So I did a little cleaning up Friday night. And today I made it back to Menard's to get more trim for the windows / doors / baseboards. Got almost all of the upstairs living room baseboard in and got into the hallway so I started setting the doors for the bedrooms. . Well... it seems that I have forgotten how to measure for a rough opening. . All 3 of my bedroom doorways are 81" tall... $ h! T... ahem... I wouldn't really care that much.. but ive already finished painting everything upstairs. So out come the old sawzall and cheap craftsman circular saw.. of course I hit perfectly on almost every nail in the bottom row for my headers.. :eyecrazy:
But I at least got one cut out and the door set and got the knob on it.. some very much needed feeling of accomplishment there...

Had to go pick up the girls at 4 so now I'm home while they nap for a bit.. then dinner / some rough housing / some cartoons / and bedtime.. just about time for momma bear to be showing back up. I'm hoping she can stand not seeing me for a couple more hours so I can get back out and try to get the last 2 doors set and trimmed out.. :willy_nil

Luke,

this is an awesome thread! I am working out all the details to start down the same path.

Do you happen to have a floor plan for the living portion of the project? I am trying to get some ideas.

keep up the work, it looks great!

Yeah I sure do.. I laid these out with a 3d home architect program I got at Staples I think.. if your interesred I can let you know which one. I think it was like $70.

Anyways. First shot is the entire first floor including the garage.. second pic is the 1st floor living area. I did move the laundry to the end room (outter wall) to aid with ventilation for the dryer. The 3rd pic is the second floor. Only thin I changed on this was I removed the closets from the 2 smaller bedrooms.

I really appreciate those, if you could pass on the name of the program I would appreciate that too.

I have a ton of questions.... If it's too much feel free to smack me, I'm just excited cause the wife has agreed to do this and yours is the first build that looks exactly like what I'm shooting for.

1). Any particular reason you went with stick frame over an engineered metal building?
2) are you doing the construction of the living quarters yourself, are you having to deal with permits and inspections?
3). I hope this doesn't go too far but can you give me a ballpark for the slab? I am looking to do a bit bigger building, but can't seem to get any numbers on concrete work.

Thanks again

I've got to admit that I've never seen this done before - spray foam applied to the sub grade before placing a concrete slab. I'm sure it's perfectly fine but you've thrown me a curve ball for sure.

Great project by the way.

Here's the link to the program on staples website. It's Punch home and landscape design by NexGen. $49.99 (figures the price went down $20. )

To answer your questions now... let's see
1. I went with pole construction #1 because it's easier for the contractors in this area.. (local money thing)#2 because its easier to nail wood to wood... ya know.. #3 I got a damn good deal on the materials package from the supplier..

2. Yes. I'm doing the living area completely myself. Well with the random buddy helping here and there. (Start building favors for your buddies now.. ;) ) as far as the permits.. I lucked out and live in a county that doesnt even require a building permit let alone inspections. I did have to buy a permit from the township trustees for my culvert and general purpose building.. but they don't do inspecfions either.. they just want the $50 ;)
The only inspections I've had done are for my septic system and the rando bank guy coming through when I pull money out of my loan. Oh and I had an electrician inspect my meter panel for energization.

3. The slab is fibered concrete (no rebar) over spray foam base (1.5" for radiant system). Its 45x60 at roughly 5" thick. I ordered 40 yards @ $100 /yd3. If you can pay in cash you'll get a discount. ~3%... I also used to work with a guy that now owns a concrete business.. so I lucked out there and had labor done for $.74/ft2. that's dirt cheap.. figure a buck a ft2 for finishing.. so without discount my slab would probably cost ~$7k.. thats without the insulation underneath.. it's a big chunk of money.. :eyecrazy:

And thanks for the compliments on the thread! I can't wait to get into my garage and get it situated! Hoping to be moving in this weekend!!!

I was onoy the second persome that the spray foam company had ever done this for. I can go thinner with the spray and be 1. Higher psi rating 2. Complete vapor barrier 3. Same r value as the sheet type foam. And you can drive a car on it and it wont break into a trillion pieces..

Thanks for the compliment too ;) glad I could make your head spin a little. :willy_nil

Any details on your floor drain, I'm looking for one and don't really know where to start...:dunno:

Details.. 3/32 plate steel pressed floor drain.. removable grate. 7" deep x 6.5" wide.. comes in 6' sections, I have 2 pieces (they bolt together) and I bought mine from the local concrete plant. (moritz concrete) Most any big concrete hauling company will be dealers for stuff like that.

Price will vary I'm sure.. but for a good one, $30 a foot.. :shocking:

:D your making me blush, lol.. yeah we have one or two in this area.. people have been building like this with plans to build a "house" in the future and never leave the building. Just keep adding on sections and bigger garages.. it's been an absolute trip no doubt, but I'm finishing trim up tonight... and I have to wait for my kitchen counter tops to come in (Dec 27th.. ) but we are doing the big move tomorrow..

As for the underground.. I'm on page 29 of like 98 I think.. :spit: totally mind blowing  LL is one very imaginitive and influential person.. he makes me wanna keep pushing myself to get that far in life (I'm only 29 now) haha I said ONLY. . god I'm getting old and still try to make myself sound young.. :( But on with the show. I'm gonna get some more pictures up tonight after I get wore out from trim.

On a more personal note.. I got to take my first "garage shower" tonight.. absolutely awesome.. heated floor shower.. I didnt wanna get out... but I saw headlights in my driveway... ( shower is right in front of the door ) so I scurried like a cockroach and got dressed quick.. turns out it was a damn snowmobile across the road in the field. . Lol :headscrat

Why not. It's a great idea and economical at the same time. Yeah LL and his crew are concrete wizards! You will Def appreciate it as you become current. Books could be written about some of these builds. They amaze me! I'm only 30...haha Damn I thought it would work but at the same time I wrote that I got a pain in my knee. As soon as I hit 30, I felt "old". Haha but I hear you... Keep pushing to do better/more. I'll never give that up! Haha thanks for the shower scene! Time for window tint out there!

Well, sounds like you are already enjoying the place as you should. Pat yourself on the back man. Well deserved! Meant to ask before. How much land do you have?

We initially bought 2 acres from my wife's grandparents. (First person the family has sold land to since 1896) pretty awesome.. we just lost John about a month ago (grandpa), I was really tore up about it. We really got along awesome and I really wanted him to see the finished product.. :( he'd love it.
Alice (grandma) has always said we have the option to buy more land.. I'd love to have about 4 more acres and the woods behind us. But maybe in a couple years.. gotta sell my other house first.

Geeze buzzkill.. alright. Back to kicking *** on this trim. :3gears:. just set my last door! Whoo!

well. Looks like a boring night tonight. I got all of the trim done in the laundry room pantry downstairs bathroom entryway entryway closet and the busy wall. Now I got all the door set in the entire house and all trimmed out. You can see in the pictures that the dark blue wall was painted last week in satin, the old lady is going to put stripes of the same color just in high-gloss paint that should look pretty cool. The dark blue room or Nook is my office space. I have to still hook up all of the speaker wire that is ran inside the walls that I did before the drywall.
I managed to get 3 flat screen wall mounts for a steal of $30 from that same local surplus. So now I'll have my 40 inch LCD Sony in the garage with the wall mount :rocker:

lastly just a few shots of the upstairs and my oldest daughters room with her bunk bed set that was actually my wife's. :spit:

The sprayed insulation under the slab is interesting. Never seen that before. Did I read the post correctly, 2 zones with only 2 loops? How long were the loops?

I'm just now finishing up my 60x96 building and have 5/8" tubing on 18" centers. Around 4300'+ of tubing. Hopefully get the boiler installed next week and the heat on.

2 pumps = 2 zones. Both thermostat controlled. One has 2 loops. 1/2 lines 18" oc. roughly 700-900 ft per loop. Works awesome with the boiler.

How many loops did you run? How many pumps? What did you do for insulation?

i thought the loops needed to be less than 300ft each for even heat ?

the whole idea behind short loops is to have even heat distribution in different rooms / areas, which is correct. I however have a garage that doesn't necessarily need to have even heat distribution because it's just a large open area. even with my 900 foot loops it really just depends on your pump if you can push the water threw fast enough the whole floor will be warm it just may be warmer in some spots. I don't really care if it's 90 degrees by my walls or by my floor drain I can't tell any different either way. from what I can tell with my insulation being so well the radiant heat doesn't necessarily have warm or cold spots once the concrete is up to temperature it's just warm, period.

now with that being said in the house part of my building you can tell where the lines first run IE the laundry room the pantry the bathroom because they are noticibly warmer if the doors are shut. But for the most part my house loop barely runs. Like at this very moment, thermostat is set at 72. Its 76.6 inside, and 22 outside.. hasn't ran since early this morning.
My garage side.. 71 set point, its 70.8 and it's running..

so my point is, if your building is broken up into two separate rooms or areas that have dividing walls, these I would definitely put on smaller loops or something I can controll with valves so that if it gets too hot in those rooms you can be turning them down a little bit to where it doesn't overheat the room.

I'm sure others will chime in about this whole scenario with their own experiences. I am by no means an expert when it comes to radiant heat.just with my experience this has been what I've learned
