Late last year I bought a used KRL-1022 and a used KR-562A from my Snap On guy as a package deal along with a brand new Snap On stool he threw in as a gift, $4,000 for both, delivered to my house. The KRL is in near mint condition as he was using it in the truck as his desk. The KR on the other hand was in pretty bad shape. Not dented or banged up, but filthy as hell, covered in stickers from the 80's and grease everywhere. The drawer rails are coated with bearing grease and sludge so much I've decided to replace them. I called Tom, my Snap On guy to get a quote, his reply was, " not much, maybe a couple of bucks per rail" so, I said, go ahead, order 'em"...should have known better. Couple weeks later Tom calls me, say's he's got them...$260.00! :wtf: "Jesus Christ Tom, a couple of bucks per rail?" Well, after some pissin' & moanin' he took $100.00 off, which was much appreciated.

Next stage was to sandblast. I gave Don Long a call, knowing he had that fancy new shipping container converted to a blast room and asked to use it. Don, the ever so gracious man he is, agreed and after removing the drawers , I threw them in the truck and went for a ride. Don never ceases to amaze me, every time I see that place I'm floored by what he and his wife, Anne have done and he always has half a dozen projects going on. I can only hope I have that much energy in a couple of years. So, yesterday I spent a good 4 hours in the blast room, using Garnett as the media. Garnett worked just fine leaving minimal residue with maximum effect. Next, I'll hose down the drawers and prime . Now, am I missing something or will going directly to primer be a problem? :dunno: I've read some guy's will use an etching liquid prior to paint.

Between what you initially paid and the slide prices, me thinks you need to find a new driver. Otherwise you are just putting that guy into a new ______ insert luxury item here.

How aggressive was the garnet on the metal?? I don't know much about blasting and was wondering how different media was on different types if metal.

Great project!!!

Yep, I got replacement slides for my KR557 and KR537 by calling customer service and asking for them. Every slide, as many as you got, for free.

I guess I'll chime in. Matco is the same. Call and they'll send them to you. Free.

On a side note, those crappy boxes from tractor supply, same deal. I know because I drove a car into a coworkers box one day. I called to buy drawers, and they sent them all for free! She said she had no way to take money. So they warrantyed my oops. How cool is that?

The new rails...

Is it possible to get the dimensions and part number on the longer slides. I am working an older box. I called Snapon and the gave sold me slides that are too short and the longer ones you have might be reworkable to what I need.

Remember to specify if you need the slides for the drawers on the front as opposed to those on the side as the drawers on the front are deeper.

These slides are also interchangeable with other boxes of that era, KR 537, 547, 557, 531, etc.

My problem is I am restoring a KR-352 from the 50's. I am lucky to be the second owner... So I don't have the same box but was hoping the longer runners on this box might be something to start with. The folks at snap on have tried to dig, but I am hoping to at least give them a place to start. Been searching for months. Sorry to hijack. OP has a great box

I'd be surprised if they weren't. I loved my aviation box/taco wagon and I got a lot of miles out of it. Its ideal for rolling up to aircraft as you have access on three sides for storage. Also cool was the spring shock absorbers. It was the cats-*** back in the day.

And yes on the rail warranty. I bought a KRL the other day and one rail was actually missing the roller carrier slide assy. I called it in to buy a replacement and not only did they replace it but they insisted on sending a pair. They told me to hang on to the old ones for a week or so and that if I received a call tag in the mail to send them back. Damn good company to deal with and you actually speak to a real person.

Did you check into upgrading from the friction-style rails to the more modern 4 piece ball bearing rails? That would be one slick box with ultra smooth gliding drawers.

OK, here you go. That box was top of the line in the 1980 catalog. I would have imbedded the links but the images are huge. Scans are courtesy of www.collectingsnapon.com

OK, as far as my Snap On guy Tom, he hasn't been by and is not returning my phone calls. Someone at another shop in the complex said something about health problems, so for now I'll have to wait.

Flattie: The part # is on the rail itself. The #'s I have are 8-1257 for the narrow drawers & 8-267 for the wider drawer's.
cmanningjr The Garnett was/is perfect for this. I've used it before on other boxes with no harm coming to the metal at all. Aggressive enough to remove the paint in a timely fashion without damage like glass beads would do.

I did run into a slight hitch in the giddyup, the day after my initial post, I came out to the garage and found grease stains along the rail tracks. I figured the sand blasting had removed any grease left on, but apparently not...

So, I had to break out the TSP and knife. dug the remaining grease out of the grooves, then gave each drawer a good scrub down. Pain in the *** and time consuming as hell, but had to be done. I'm using Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer, which I always use, seems to work best as opposed to the black or gray primers. I still have about 4 drawers left to prime and then I can move on to the box itself. I am a little surprised at the amount of primer it's taking, so far 7 cans. These are just a couple...

You're painting all the surface area on each drawer, front inside, side, back, bottom, correct? That's a lot of surface area and 13 drawers, so I would expect it to take at least ten cans.

When I do a repaint on a box, usually the bottom and back of the drawer is fine, sometimes the sides, so I'll just respray the front and inside of the drawer. Figure the original coat is fine on those other parts, and they're never seen or seldom (sides). Since you're doing a complete respray I understand why you're painting everything, but it's also going to take a lot of primer and paint.

Your right about the area. At this rate, this will be an expensive restore, I'm almost considering not painting the inside of the box, but on the other hand I don't want it turning out half assed either.

Thus why I try to avoid "restoration needed boxes". However in this case I think spending a few or many extra hours of work will really pay off in the end. Done up right and taken care of properly that box could be around for many years to come. Plus if you are anything like me in the back of your mind you will always know there are the imperfect spots and it will drive you mad. :willy_nil

The only stipulation for your free slides is you must post pics of your box.

Still Need a butcher block top, one piece of corner trim, new locks, and waiting for my slides to come in. But I couldn't be happier for the $300 it cost me.

Unashamed, very nice. However, I noticed the badge on it looks incorrect. For the trim style of that box, looks like it should have the newer SO badge. Did you buy it with this badge on it?
