Hello all. Came across this site as I started my shop build and I am already getting ideas and features added just from browsing (i.e. in floor lighting under my lift). Starting this thread to follow the build and I am sure your input will cause feature creep and improvements along the way.

I am building a place to hold my cars and toys, but a working shop. I do everything on my cars EXCEPT paint and body, so no reason for those inputs into the design. Shop is 36x38 and includes my home office , 1/2 bath, and a storage area for lawnmowers , equipment, and bikes. Two automobile bay's (although I could wedge them 2 deep if I wanted), with a recessed ceiling and lift on the right bay, allowing me parking for 3 at least.

My everyday cars go in the house attached garage.

Here is the plan, subject to change as we go:

Here is the land after clearing. Yes, here is a house going in here too but lets not focus on the silly details like the associated home!

Strings are up, lots of dirt to bring in and block is next.

More to come.....

Very cool size and layout. I like the plans for separate storage for lawn mowers and bikes, I would do the same. Are you planning for a 2 post or 4 post lift?

Thanks. I was planning for a 2 post lift (suspension work) but feel free to give advice. Rain washed out this entire week so NOTHING has gotten done.

By the way, here is my site layout. The drainage system was necessary because I am laying more than 4k sqft of concrete on the lot so I had to have a retention pond. Didn't want a retention pond so I worked with an engineer and designed that drainage system, to have the right size piping so that is acts as an underground retention pond, controlling how much water is shed off the land. Took some finagling to get it through city permitting but we did it.

I chalked everything out in a grocery store parking lot today and the concern I have now is whether my wife can make the U turn into the house garage (right bay) on the 33.5 foot concrete pad between the house garage and the shop. Don't want her to have to 3 point turn in....may have to lop 1 or 2 feet off the house garage (it is currently 26 feet deep so I have room, but need to fit my F250 in there too) in order give her a couple extra feet to make the turn.

One of the mistakes I made in my shop was having the OH door to close to the wall. In my opinion your making the same mistake having the wall between the office and the shop to close to the OH door. Once stuff starts to collect along the wall on the shop side your going to start to block the door. At the very least your loosing the opportunity of having storage along that wall in the shop area.

Again my opinion and experience.

Any fans of the Gladiator Garageworks stuff out there, or anyone have a different opinion? Have an option through my company to get that stuff at a 25% discount. I haven't gone up to Sears to put my hands on it, but the online material looks nice enough.

Nice start and it is a very good idea to make sure your wife can make that turn in one shot. My wife drives a similar size SUV and trust me if she is anything like my wife, you will not hear the end of it if she can't. Our soon to be neighbors have a drive thru with a garage that is awkwardly placed and too little distance between the back and front garages watching the wife maneuver her Lincoln Navigator out is like that scene in Austin Powers with the golf cart in the tunnel.

I did what I could to address it. Cut 2 feet of the house garage and now the turning pad between the shop and garage is almost 36 feet. Hoping it is enough.

You can't really see the shop much on the far right, but I mounted my game camera on a tree facing the back of the site when we started, and set it to take one pic every hour between 8am-6pm. Should be kind of cool when done to watch the house go up. After cleaning it up here is my first little time lapse of the house progress.

Very nice size and layout.
Looking forward to your progress pics. Any reason you decided against a door between your storage area and your shop area?

Those time lapse videos are great to see the progression in a short time.
Nice piece of property and shop design.

Rain washed my footer trenches. Today the rebar comes out, retrench, reset rebar. Inspection Wednesday and pour Thursday.

Really because I wanted that full wall for toolboxes and workbenches and such. Also I never wanted the kids taking their bikes, scooters, pogo sticks, ANYTHING from that storage shed into my garage.

We have made some progress, although slow. I want the land perfect, so I am putting a ton of work (and $$) into retaining walls to maximize my flat land. The drainage system also has to be sunk yet. The retention pond is a huge project and ties into the retaining wall system so its slowing progress on the actual shop a bit. There is 80 feet of 4 ft pipe that will make up my underground retention pond. This will hold water shed off the land and dispense through a 12 inch pipe. I am also stubbing the irrigation system into the tubes to use the water retained in there for irrigation.

And the retaining wall that borders the driveway to the shop. That is the boat parking pad on the right and the shop to the right of that:

It's coming along. Should have this wall capped and driveway built up today. Scheduled to fill the foundation block on Thursday.

The boxes for the underground pond are in...have to set them all tomorrow. The word that is coming to mind is OVERBUILT!

80 feet of 4 foot diameter pipe and 4 of these huge 7600lb each boxes going under my driveway and parking pads. The good news is in the case of a nuclear apocalypse the whole family could live in this thing. Essentially it will be a 4 bedroom underground bomb shelter.

And one more....the final shot for the week with almost all the grading done. The shop is in the back. Plumbers and electricians lined up for Monday to lay things out....maybe we get a slab soon.

Photobucket is kind of a pain, imgur doesn't have caps that I know of and seems easier to link when posting photos across many message boards.

All sitework is now done, plumber coming Monday to start marking things out...should be framing in 2 weeks, weather permitting the pour.
