Lots of things have changed since this first post !! Read through and ask whatever questions you may have.

Hello from Albany, MN.

My wife and I purchased a 60 acre patch with a few buildings on it October 2014. One of them is a 24' square wood stove heated shop. Pretty well insulated as it doesn't take much to keep it warm in -20°F.

At any given time I'll have between 120 and 150 Holstein steers around. I run 750 acres with my dad give or take a few each year so a nice shop will be a must someday !!

My dad and I built a corner out in one of our 60x120 sheds to use for the time being. I can throw up some pics sometime. It's 22x30x14 with a single 16w 14h overhead. Just enough room to keep the skid and a tractor warm.

Half the building site.

JB: sounds nice and great pictures. that tractor you have in the picture is a monster or is it a combine or some other big machine?

is your 750 acres that you work at your parent's and is it close to yours or do you have a little commute to get back to your 60 acres?

welcome

We own and rent land all over the place. The farthest fields are about 11 miles apart and I'm almost exactly in the center. It's quite convenient.

This is the combine.
35259552820_dacf79946e_b.jpg

The tractor in the picture is our primary tillage tractor. We use it to work all the dirt and get it ready for planting in the spring.
35259552750_6b54e72549_b.jpg

When it's being worked hard it drinks 15+ gallons of diesel an hour. That is roughly a 20oz bottle a minute and this tractor is about half the size of the largest one in production today.
35259552270_a947103e06_b.jpg

This is the "farm shop." We poured a 40x60 pad of concrete in the west side of a 60x120 Morton's shed and built a 22x30 heated shop in the corner.

Welcome. Nice place, just drove through there this summer. I see the 325 didn't make it to far from the factory. The farm I work at part time we have a 325, 275 and a 350 plus more. They milk 900 or so. Just how bad are the bugs out there in the summer, I saw a many adds for summer spraying?

JB: great pictures and you certainly know how to post them. any questions or goals you want to share here on your thread? please ask here and maybe somebody will see them and give you some ideas.

best place to get more specific answers is on the threads talking about the subject you have questions and ask there. enjoy the reading and i'll check back in to see if you need a little help or PM me if you have a question about vises or old tools because that is where i'm usually posting and reading threads.

take care and congrats on your new place. i'm in the process of taking pictures of all my garage, shop and storage places and going to start a thread on organizing. i like the steel look so metal racks, cabinets and benches are most of what i'm leaning towards using exclusively.

I'd like some more ideas on useful and practical storage for a small space.

In the next farm shop I build out here I'm going to be putting some multi-purpose 12" square pots in the floor. They will be setup to be used for a whole host of things, a portable vice mount being just one of them.

JB: awesome stand and even nicer Wilton. is that the 8 inch monster or their 6 incher? you might want to take a look at the vise stand thread i started in the fabrication section and of course post these pictures of yours with your Wilton. also the guys on the Vises of Garage Journal would like to see that Wilton on that thread. here's the link for the vise stands thread and we got a bit off subject tonight talking about belt grinders, but there are a few pretty cool stands in that thread. http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=252799

i'm getting ready to start a build thread building a couple of these welding tables which i'm going to use sort of like saw horses on big projects because i don't have a big shop like you do.

i'm also trying to find benches to mount a few of my pretty big 6 inch old vises so here's a picture.

Yikes I wish that was my Wilton but alas, my pockets are not lined with the gold flake that they put on them beauties.

This summer I'm building a 54x96 Cattle Shed and next year I plan to build a new farm shop if mama can live in our tiny house for a few more years. I've got a few drawn up but am having a hard time pulling the trigger on spending $150k. It doesn't directly make me $$$$$ like a barn or a new tractor and I'm a tight *** so we'll see what happens.

If you haven't already discovered it this is the most amazing online design tool I've used to date.

http://fbi.icovia.com/icovia.aspx

I drew this with it. 2 48x48 heated areas and a 24x24 office/garage.

The barn has been completed and it working wonderfully. We will be starting on a 48x112x18 hay shed this spring and I couldn't be more excited.

I'd say welcome but that would be a little late. You caught my attention with the Quaker Rd title as there is a Quaker Road local to me.

I also you're not particular on a color of tractor but you did put green in your avatar.

Since this thread is a year plus old and you are showcasing the place, I'm going to move it to the gallery section.

Being that it is spring and I want it up before I'm done with fieldwork I made the decision to hire out most of it. I'm going to help if I'm around to cut down on the labor a little but we're in the field finally so I won't be helping much.

Holes are drilled for posts and cookies are poured.

Poles are all up and perlings are on the north and west walls.

I am planning on putting a wall made out of 2x2x4 foot concrete stacking blocks between the hay shed and the barn to compensate for the 4' elevation difference. They were delivered today and we got a few set in place.

Most of the first row is in place. I compacted 6" of crushed concrete under the blocks and put a slope of 1" over the 2' block width towards the hill they'll be holding back. I used a Lull to set them in place from the top side. It took some doing to get them as crooked as they are.
35517343131_4289d40b18_b.jpg

My 3yr old helped me drive the Lull while the 1yr old guarded my bucket.

JBL: the barn and new shop are looking great. keep up the great posts and don't make yourself a stranger and post and read other threads in case you want to share some of that knowledge you have or want to learn something.

cheers and I did like the helpers that look more like supervisors.

Back at it again.

The contractor was very excited to let me use his Lull, I did not turn him down.

Oh look what I've spotted out in the wild. Is it? Yes it is!!! A fellow Garage Journal member holding my blocks down. The little rascals tried to float away a few times so he took it upon himself to make sure it didn't happen again  Also appears the little supervisors are "helping" again.

Tile was laid behind the wall because I could. Also discovered I **** at math and counting and such. I'm seven blocks short.

Those 24"x24' headers don't look nearly as large when they're 16' off the ground ... Posts on either side are 8ply 2x6's. It should hold.
35528634301_0b6aa5e0ab_b.jpg

Eventually the new shed will be surrounded on the north and west sides by hostas of a few different varieties. I love them as they're no/low maintenance and I think they look nice. Plus, my mother has a ton she wants to get rid of. Price drives decisions around here. These are planted on the north side of the steer barn.

Nice build. Good to see other people from central MN on here.

I'm getting ready to break ground on a 32 x 38 in Avon.

Well Well Well, look what we have here.
34817845084_4e0d71a9a0_b.jpg

We even managed to get a few up today.
34817845324_3fef6d47dc_b.jpg

There will be a 4'over-hang on the south side with the doors and no over-hang on the north side.
34817845714_61767437af_b.jpg

Not really a progress picture but this is part of why I enjoy living out here.

So I thought something was funny with the rafters yesterday and today it became oh so obvious. I ordered them to have a 4' overhang on the south side and no overhang on the north. Well they came with a 2' overhang on both sides. The rafter manufacture told us to just "Cut off one side and extend the other" Uh ... Ok I guess. I told them they would have to come out and okay it when we had them installed and sign off on our work so if the overhang falls off or something stupid they saw it and approved it. We ended up putting an 8' 2x10 on the south end to extend it so there's 6' nailed onto the rafter and 2' more sticking out. It should work just fine, or so I was told. It was signed off on and approved and I got it in writing that the "redesign" was approved by the manufacture and the modified rafters have the same 50yr guarantee as they did before.
35271996750_b4e7360f72_b.jpg
34817963494_7e32651bef_b.jpg

But wait, it gets better. They sent enough rafters for a 96' building, not a 112' building so we are two short ! ! ! Yesterday I counted them to make sure what was on the shipping slip was what we got and it was. It didn't click that 13 wasn't enough while the truck was still here. Well, they are suppose to be sending two more out first thing tomorrow. I told them to make sure to build them wrong as well so at least they are are all the same in their incorrectness.
34817963654_865da4ff3d_b.jpg

On a positive note, I love this time of year. There are 5 days a year that make me all giddy inside. When the first wheat comes up, when the first corn comes up, when the first beans are up, when we start harvesting and the moment after the shower I take after blowing off the combine.

Well today the first wheat we planted is up.

JB: it looks like you are making great progress on the new building. sorry to hear about all the issues with the trusses. just curious why you didn't do a over hang on all sides? was it just cost, easier access to the roof, did you like the look better, or do tell?

good luck and best of luck that those little seedlings grow into a great crop of wheat.

I am a tight *** and the overhangs on the other three sides of the building serve no functional purpose. I do not want to get dripped on when I lock and unlock the doors on the entrance side, that is why there is an overhang there.

I hear ya on the Hostas, I got a hillside full of them since I didn't want to cut the grass on that hill! They are starting to come out now which I'm glad cause I was getting tired of seeing just brown mulch and rocks on the hill side.

JB: no you just want to spend your extra money on TOOLS.

good luck and I like HOSTAS too and have a few a couple steps out my front door. since you like new plant growth how about my front yard that is maybe on it's second flower blooming this year already. you can see a small hostas in the bottom of the picture and I have 2 bigger ones closer to the front door.

my machine for cutting grass is a bit smaller than your combine too.
