Hello all.

I'm in the middle of restoring a Craigslist pick up and I have sourced everything that I need except for one screw. Does anyone know where I can find a jaw pad screw for a 1920s Prentiss Bull Dog 51-91 vise?

Now I did search the forum and I did look through the local big box stores and came up empty. Any help would be much appreciated.

I have attached a picture of the jaw pad screw that I need along with the vise before I started the restoration.

Thanks!

The quick way is to find any typical screw that fits the threads and modify the head. You can do this by gripping the threads of the screw in your drill and then spinning it against your bench grinder wheel until you get the desired angle. You can cut the screw to length with a hack saw and clean everything up on your wire wheel. I've done this many times now and they end up looking almost factory made if you take your time. Good luck.

Yea, making my own is what I will do if I can't find one. I was hoping for a quick and easy find but as usual, things don't end up that way.

Thanks.

TH: check the Vise Repair 101 thread because some of the guys make their own like Balane and there was a source for some to buy that might work.

welcome to the forum and when you get done spiffing up that vise you can post a before and after pictures on the 101 thread that the link is in my signature or the main vise thread here.

I made my own for a craftsman. 1/4 20 bought from lowes, the top 4 I made, the lower is the purchased ex, along with what I believed to me the OEM screw. I made mine on the belt grinder with a little patience.

Thanks for the advice fellas. I was able to determine that the size is 5/16 course thread. I'm going to attempt to make my own over the weekend. If that fails then I will throw myself at the mercy of other forum members.

As for the vise, here are the requested before and after pics. This one is meant for use in my garage so I wanted to sure that everything worked perfectly. I will go through the details in the resto 101 thread.

Not bad for 25 bucks.

What I ended up doing was clamping the screw in my electric drill and then ran it against my bench grinder. More or less, I created a home made lathe and it worked perfectly. In 15 minutes, I had 4 new jaw pad screws and I could not be more pleased.
