36x36 Barn Plus 60x40 Shop

Hello all,

Time for my second build in a year and a half or so. I recently moved to Wyoming from Colorado to be closer to my parents as my father is battling cancer. So far I love it up here!

My wife and I have a need for both a barn and shop. We broke ground on both buildings today!

The barn will be a basic, 36x36' three stall barn with wash bay and tack room. Nothing too fancy here. We decided to build it on a monolithic slab for ease of cleaning.

The shop will probably interest more people here. It will be a 60' deep x 40' wide x 14' tall walls. This shop will be for auto & metal work, fabrication, and gunsmithing.

We plan to outfit with a lathe and a mill which will mainly be used for building rifles and other gunsmithing work. I am also into 4 wheeling so we'll be building 4 wheeling vehicles and cages for UTV's along with just about anything else we can dream up.

Barn slab is poured. Water lines for automatic waterers and a drain for a wash stall. Shop slab will be poured this week.

It's a little early, but I found the lathe I wanted and I couldn't pass up this deal. LeBlond Regal 15x60 lathe. Can't wait to build some rifles.

Time to get a quick change tool post and dro now.

I am a newer metal worker but got into cnc machines about 6 years ago. I retrofitted a purpose made 1987 Millport cnc 1050 knee mill with new centroid controls last year. Ever think about that vs just a mill? Would be sweet for gun smithing and using a mpg it works manually too. I bought a 1340 baileigh lathe and i am loving it too. Also use a 1236 atlas.

We have similar shop size req too. I just built a 40x64x16. I also do wood working and cnc routing in wood and plastics.

Have you made many barrels before?

Actually this will be my first go at a personal lathe. I've got very limited time on them. I've been wanting one for years. Very excited to learn a new skill!

I'll look into a cnc mill. I was looking at Bridgeports because it seemed like there was a lot of options to convert one to CNC. What is a Millport like the one you have go for these days?

It was tough as hell finding a lathe. I've been in search of a quality used unit for about 3 years. Seems like they are all either over-priced, over-worked or both.

Update......

Both pads are poured. Barn is framed out. Our trusses are still 3-4 weeks out. They'll start framing the shop on Monday.

You have very nice project and 'toys'!

Would you happen to have a source for new or refinished nuts and bolts for Mopars? I have a 1970 Barracuda I bought as a project and I'm not excited about sorting through the coffee can of hardware/fastners when the time comes to put it back together!

Depends on what nuts and bolts you are looking for honestly. For engine components, 440 source is a good bet to have originals.

Year one has reproduction sets for interior.

If you can't find it from Year One, Classic industries or 440 Source, check Tony's Mopar Parts and Jim's Auto Parts.

Barn is progressing. We were going to set trusses on the shop today but the wind was howling as Old Glory shows so they started building the overhang on the stall side. Also been constructing a two rail wood fence around the front pasture.

Been way too long for an update, the barn is just about done. Shop is getting close too.

I built some horse stalls, spent yesterday putting them up. Breathed a big sigh of relief when everything lined up properly

Negative. We removed quite a bit of topsoil. We did want the slab above grade by 6" on high side, so it looks a little goofy. Yesterday I back filled around the slab on both buildings with road base. Quite a bit of elevation change from one side of the buildings to the other.

As with rest of the Rockies, it varies greatly. Average temp in winter may be 30 deg. Can get below zero and up in 60's too.

I couldn't help myself when I saw these Viper lime green tool chests after dad said they reminded him of his 71 Mach 1, so I bought two 41" and one black 16". The pic has a green 16" but the one I bought is indeed black.

This is an idea of what it should look like. Also: Sketchup is pretty awesome.

That is a pretty cool layout. I've heard good things about the Viper cabinets.

I bought a two drawer 26" box from them to see the quality for myself and was impressed. Then I found a 26" 5 drawer in a sears store and they seem to be substantially better quality than craftsman professional line. The drawers seem much more solid. Not sure what happened to craftsman, but seems their quality has gone downhill.

I have been able to get some industrial cabinets from work. I believe mine are Lyon, like a Vidmar. HEAVY. I have two 11 drawer cabinets that are about 5' tall and two 4 drawer units on casters that are about 3 1/2' tall. Need to clean them up and paint them once the shop gets a roof!

I may need more cabinets. Vipers are on the watch list as are the Harbor Freight. HF has some nice, heavy 41" and 52" cabinets.

Contractor packed up his stuff yesterday. Need to get a sink/cabinet in there still though.

I've got some wiring of lights to do, love these fixtures so far. I had 30 T8 fixtures and LED lamps to install but I've decided to send them back and just go with all Lithonia IBH 12L's.

Looking good. I imagine your ag use and don't have to deal with permitting? Should be some very nice work space and never hurts to keep the wife happy with a little horse heaven. I built a ground up 69 charger for a friend many yrs ago. Need to get some of my old school photo's scanned. Have a great New Year and keep us posted. Mike
