Thanks to all the awesome garages on here I've found I need to update and remodel my garage. This is a 22x22 garage built in the mid 50's. I had only 3 outlets one on the back wall one by the door to the house and one for the garage door. The previous owner poured a new floor and apron.

I started with tearing out all the old shelves and pulling all the nails.. There were a LOT of nails.

After the nails were pulled I pulled down the old wiring. I left the garage door circuit in place and ran one light from there so I could work on running the new wiring after work.

I found some scary stuff..

We put up a shed and a lot of the stuff you see is now in there. That helped immensely.

That's all for now more updates soon..

................

I've got a lot of pics of my progress but they aren't organized. AND I type VERY slow.

here's close to where I am currently. I was close to that GD opener for sure. looked like I was going to hit that arm while driving up the ramps.

View media item 52793
I'll post more pics and explain more what I was doing when I can.

Once I removed the old conduit and wiring I worked at running power to the garage. My main panel is in the basement approx 75' including the vertical run to the attic. I ran 4/3 Romex for a 60a supply (could swap to 70a but the breaker was 2x the price). I asked a lot of questions here on GJ while doing this work. I mounted the panel here:

View media item 48791
I ran the wire from here:

View media item 52823
Up to the attic and across to the garage

View media item 52780
Then over and down to the panel

View media item 52782
I then started hanging the 4x4 boxes 50" from the floor (so 52" centered).

View media item 52783
View media item 52784
I ran 2 20A circuts for wall outlets the first box has 2 GFCIs. From there the next box (2 duplex receptacles) is fed from one of the two GFCIs. The box after that is fed off the other GFCI. So every other set of receptacles is on a different circuit.. Clear as mud right? So every other box is daisy chained from the first box for the 2 20A circuits..

Yes it was a pain working around all that stuff until we got our shed.

Well I'll try to post some more soon.. Thanks for looking.

This is a great garage. The shed is nice and a real plus for you. The electricals look good and your open now to doing walls if you choose. I like it!!

Thank you HSpencer..

I'm pretty happy with how the panel and outlet placement went.

I also ran 2 30A 240v circuits. One in the center of the back wall next to the window (small welder in future)

View media item 52768
The other in the front corner for a small upright air compressor. I found I couldn't buy "cheap" black plastic covers for the Nema 30a plug I used. I bought cheap metal ones and painted them black.

View media item 52788
Here is the current panel. (Please don't mind the temporary wire for the GD opener.)

View media item 52824
I rewired the lights in the front and rear of the garage. You can see the rear yard light in the upper left of this pic. I've added a motion sensor sense this pic.

View media item 50720
I ran outlets on the bottom chords for lights. Please note I didn't staple these wires yet as I plan to raise the bottom chord up 1/3 of the roof height.. As of now there are 5 2x4 bottom chords. I plan to update and replace with 2x6's also I want to put these at every rafter so 17 in all including the ends. If that makes sense :dunno:. I hope to install a Lift at some point so I'd like that extra 1.5' extra headroom.

View media item 52827
I also ran a 20a MWBC to the Shed.

View media item 52766
That's all for now.. Will post some more soon...

I am betting in WI it would be very prudent to insulate and heat. You would have a very comfortable place there. Thanks for the many photos of the electrical work. You have done a great job on that. Your going to have a super place!!

Thanks for your postings. I will be following along.

Best Regards
Herb

Thank you HSpencer. I hope to heat/cool it someday but I'll need to redo the ceiling joists first to support the drywall or plywood.

I put up 8 of the 2 bulb T-8 HD specials. I have 2 more to install for 10 total.

View media item 53040
I bought the cheapest strip outlets for 3.99 and cut off the cords for the lights. I couldn't find a molded cord set with 14g wire for cheaper.

These are the bulbs I used

somethings missing from the middle of the ceiling..

But I'll get to that later.. Thanks for following along..

Looks like a fun project!

In the meantime (before insulation/drywall), build some shelves into the studs with a few horizontal 2x4 (or even 2x6) braces between the studs. I did that on an old garage and it turned out really nice for small can/bottle storage.

In your opening post, the second picture shows a regular door (man door) located on what appears to be a load-bearing wall. The header above the door doesn't seem to be proper, it looks like nothing more than a 2X4 with the flat side down. You may want to fix that before you do any insulating or wall covering.

I've hinted to something I've done recently. I installed a Liftmaster 8500. Awesome GD opener.. Its quiet and works perfect. The door dosent seem to bang around as much as it did before. Here's the before pic. (I added an outlet here for this.)

View media item 52980
I plan to move the light in the future and add a cord reel there..

View media item 52871
Here's the tension monitor. All it is is a plastic arm with a piviot and a micro switch behind it. If the cable goes slack it stops the opener. This keeps the cable on the drum for safety.

View media item 52872
I hope this helps anyone trying to figure out how this part works I see a lot of questions on this site about it.

heres a before pic of the wall area for the GD switch.

View media item 52778
I moved the GD switch down and the light switches up. Also replaced the wall plate. That light switch on the right is a gfci/switch combo.

View media item 52981
Now I need to start thinking about getting the lumber for that ceiling.

See y'all on the next round..

James-W, I see what you see but it does have a double 2x4 header with a 2x4 under that.

Thank you tho..

(again don't mind the temp wire for the old GD opener)
Sorry, I thought I was looking at a door, but it turns out it is a window. Look at the second picture in your opening post. The window is behind the toolbox. There appears to be no header other than a 2X4 on its side above the window. I believe that window is on a load bearing wall and it really should have a header of the appropriate size.

The Garage will have a theme if you will. The lower wall will be grey. The middle where the outlets are will have a black stripe. Then white above.

I had planned to use 7/16 plywood for the walls. One 4' sheet at the bottom (grey) another 4' at the top (white) the 8" that's left in the middle black . The middle section I wanted to leave removable for future wiring.

The reason I moved the switches by the man door to the house was to match the height of the outlets and other switches at the 52" level. The old GD opener switch was even with the light switches. The new GD switch is the same size but the mounting is lower in the plastic thus its up much too high. I'll adjust it before I'm done.

See y'all on the next round.

James-W, Ahh the windows. Tho I like them, I think that I'm going to eliminate them for security and privacy. Also they are very low it will be hard to put a bench there. If I keep them I will cut and put in a double 2x4 header there. Good call and Thank you.

See y'all on the next round.

I agree, I only put one window in my garage and the only reason for that window is so I can put an air-conditioner in it during the Summer. I have a mini-blind that covers the window the rest of the time so nobody can see in.

I wouldn't worry about it. It has zero bow and has clearly withstood quite a few winters of snow load, it's fine. The sheathing is doing most of the work anyway.

Thank you both. James-W and ishiboo. We put up blinds too for the same reasons James.

View media item 53029
ishiboo, I have to think your right this was built in the 50's and there is no bow at all.. I think if I do wall one up I'll put a stud thru the middle for peace of mind. For the other window I may build up some support for an ac unit.

See y'all on the next round

I've moved quite a bit and I'm in my first house w windows in the garage ... I now can't imagine not having windows in my garage. I know it's a security liability, but the natural light is priceless. I'm not too worried about it, but for those who are, there has to be other solutions to address the security piece?

I'm really enjoying the progression of your garage!

I love the bare bones, exposed old wood look but I can appreciate insulation and wall sheeting even more. It was amazing how much warmer it stayed once we insulated the attic and that was just ambient heat from the cars.

I have one window in my garage and it's about seven feet to the bottom of it and unfortunately it doesn't open. I would love to be able to get fresh air through it for those times I don;t want to leave the doors open.

My house was built in the '40s and I've found one window framed like that so far. It is on the gable end like yours as well. The garage is newer, '60s, and they did make the window headers proper but didn't use jack studs, even on the eave walls.

Isn't it amazing how the old buildings are still standing even without some of the modern standards..

Thank you bww_mnm, I do like the natural light too. I guess bars could be installed but that would be like sitting in a jail cell . I think the best would be sky lights. Or one could have more small windows installed higher 'think port windows on a ship'.

I look forward to redoing the ceiling to insulate it along with the walls. I'm surprised that window doesn't open. Could you modify it to open?

I've been thinking of installing a screen door on the man door for the garage.

I was also thinking about getting one of those huge screens for the garage door too.

Today its clean up time in the garage so we can move to the next step..

See y'all on the next round.

Tho I haven't worked on the garage. I have worked in it tho. The passenger side exhaust manifold started leaking awhile ago. She does have 192k+ miles on her. Local place wanted $1500. I did it for under $300 including the new manifold new SS studs and nuts a bottle of nickel anti seize a set of LH drill bits and a couple easy outs.

All nuts and all but 2 studs came out no problem. The rear 2 studs broke right away . I ended up taking out the inner fender to better get at the broken studs.

^is what i had to work with.

Here I have the bottom one done and the stud in for reference for the top one. I did mess the top one up a little but the Stud went in place and tightened.

Me in my haste forgot to take a pic of installed manifold with the inner fender out :willy_nil

I could replace the window with one that opens but it's well out of reach and the house is only three years old so I'll leave it alone. I've thought about the screens too, Harbor Freight has them cheap but probably wouldn't last long!

Nice job and pictures!
Looks like you could unbolt the upper shock mount for more room if needed as well.
