Went back to the estate sale this morning to see if I could find the missing socket and handle for the tiny tool kit I bought yesterday but to no avail. The two other tool sets were still there but the 50% didn't go into effect until noon and it was only ten o'clock. So I bought them at full price.
The first set is a 1/2 inch drive by Blackhawk and is missing a couple of the sockets(1/2-11/16ths)but in their place are a set of four 4 point sockets. There are also 2 deep sockets and two large Bonney sockets that look to have never been used. There is a speed handle;a crank type handle and the extension has a sleeve over it to allow you to steady it while it is used. There is a track rod socket(looks like a large straight slot screwdriver)and a mystery socket that has a U-shaped piece of metal cotter-pinned to the end.
Inside the box was a cloth bag marked Keystone Tool Co (NOB)6 piece socket set.Inside the bag were the sockets which are very unusually shaped at the base and are unstamped. Have to research this company.
This whole setup cost me $10.
The tool box is unmarked and is of a most unusual design.Trapezoidal in shape there is a hinged flap at the top that provides a locking capability and when opened allows the top to slide off revealing a three shelf tool box that is hinged to allow it to pivot to either side.It contained a lot of old open end wrenches including a pair of Herbrand Vanadium Tappet Wrenches,a socket set(looks a lot like an Indestro with a 1/2 inch hex drive but unmarked)and several specialized tools I'm still trying to identify. This one cost me $25.

I could use some good pics of that stuff on my (our) history site!

What a great find it would make for a good story on the Keystone Co.:thumbup:

I checked the Alloy Artifacts site and can find no listing for a Keystone Tool Co. Do you have any info on them?

I also found a very unusual socket in the pile inside the tool box. There were a bunch of 7/16ths hex drive sockets that resembled to ones from Duro/Indestro and among them was a 1/2 inch socket that had a 12 point drive instead of the usual 6 point.A hex drive wrench fit it but I have never seen one before. Anyone ever seen anything like this?

That BH extension with the "grip" is really unique. I've never seen another until I picked this one up at the flea yesterday. Mine spins freely. Anyone know if it's supposed to or is it supposed to "lock in" so you can grip and turn?

Safariknut, great finds all around. That Blackhawk set deserves to be in the Vintage Blackhawk Thread:

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=127364&highlight=vintage+blackhawk+thread

I have the crank and T handles and have been meaning to post them there but have to dig them out first. If you need a ratchet for that set, their old pressed steel ratchets are fairly easy to come by on Ebay.

As for Keystone, there is a bit about them on AA if you google the name. They are listed under "various mfrs":

https://home.comcast.net/~alloy-artifacts/other-makers-p2.html

Twertsy-nice find on the extension. Those came in many brands. Williams, Blackhawk, Snap On, Armstrong, Walden, Milwaukee Tool &Forge, etc. . I like those :)

safariknut,

Your Blackhawk set is from the Quick Disconnect (Q.D.) late 1920's/early 1930's era. They made several sets in various combinations and sizes of sockets and handles, and the set number was the number of pieces in the set. They all came in those attache style cases. Very gangsterish if you ask me. I found a partial Q.D. No. 32CD set once, completed it over time, with the help of several other members, including a few bonafide Blackhawk boys, and restored it ("tricked it out" might be more accurate). Even though it was outside my wheelhouse, I couldn't resist. Awesome tools.

Here's the thread on that project with loads of Before n After shots if you're interested...

I was doing some research when I happened upon this thread again, and in re-reading it for the second time, I was struck by the "NOB" reference in a way I wasn't the first time around, probably because I did not have access to the 1939 Bonney catalog at that time. Bonney had a little known run of economy line tools at that time called "NOB." They listed them, just a few pages, in the very back of the catalog. I don't know if there is any connection. It seems unlikely to be a mere coincidence, but then again, the sockets in your Keystone "NOB" marked bag do not look like Bonney production. They don't look like typical Keystone production, either, to be frank. They most resemble the King/Newton/Engineering Services output of the 20's.

Believe it or not - yes!

I have a Keystone Socket Set No. 600 (See Pic 4) and the 1/2-inch hex drive socket with a 1/2" service opening in this set has a double-hex drive opening instead of a hex drive opening. It's the only socket in the set with a double hex drive. In comparison photos (See Pics 1, 2 & 3) to your original photos (See Post #10), it looks identical to your socket.

Lugz, any use for this Keystone M1555 ratchet that I found last weekend? Doesn't look like it'll fit in that box.

How long is it? The box is only 6-1/2". I haven't tried to find a catalog or ad reference for my set, so I don't know if it was supposed to have a ratchet or not. It may have just had the 'L' handle. It would need a drive plug, too.

I didn't notice the distinction in names, actually, especially since both have an address in Buffalo (which is odd, to say the least!), but note that my set being a Keystone set is just a weird coincidence itself. I wasn't posting it in reply to the Keystone TEN-IN-ONE set in the burlap bag in post #1. I was posting it in reply to the weird and previously unidentified double-hex drive socket he posted in post #10, which was completely unrelated to the bagged set. The fact that my double-hex drive socket happens to have been in a set made by a manufacturer with 'Keystone' in its name is just a coincidence.

Rog........I can't find a "Keystone Tool Co" anyway. I do find an Keystone Tool & Mfg. Co in Buffalo late teens through 20's.

I suspect Keystone Tool Co, Keystone Mfg, and Keystone Tool & Mfg, all in Buffalo, are all slightly different monikers for the same company.

I did find a record of a Keystone Tool Company in Houston, Tx, est 1947, and, in a book about accounting problems, a Keystone Tool Company that changed its name to Pennsylvania Tool Company in 1908.

I think there may have been a number of companies using that name, mostly from Pennsylvania (keystone state).
