What a nice day for a CL Garage sale hunt when I came across this very nice set marked down to $20.00 dollars. I know today everything is Metric and a lot of it comes from overseas but this set Oozes quality from the dovetail 24" long box to the very fine set laying inside of the box.

The S. W. Card Mfg. Co. got their start back in 1874 in Mansfield, Massachusetts and that lasted until 1908; when they got bought out by the Union Twist Drill Co. of Athol, MA.

I hope you enjoy the pictures of Set No. 80 and be sure and see the links for any more information.

Very nice. Does it go to 3/4"? I like the square lugged lock/adjustment screw on the die stock. Seems a way better than a knurled screw.

Hi it does go to 3/4 and on top of that the set comes with a special pin that you use to on the square adjustment screw...A quality made set from long age. :)

I have a larger individual SW Card tap handle, about 20" long, that I bought when I needed a tap handle capable of turning a 3/4 NPT tap. Starrett doesn't make handles that big, and I wanted a GTD but they seem to hold resale value well.

The $10 used SW Card always did what I needed it to. I like the jaw design of GTD better, with 2 V-shaped jaws, vs the Card's lightning bolt shaped jaws. (Edit: i see yours has V-shaped jaws. Score!)When you really crank on the wrench to tighten it, the shape of the jaws wants to make the tap pivot off of them, and you can actually see the body flex. However, at this point the wrench will not let go unless you make it, which is good bc constantly re-tightening the handle while trying to hand tap a bunch of holes is annoying at best.

;)

I've actually been looking for some more information on Will B. Lane, but on my way down the rabbit hole - poring through *.pdf files ranging in size from 80MB to 217MB, am finding all sorts of oddities.

I have noticed that some of the artwork in the advertisements between 1900 and 1920 is pretty remarkable, the above example included.

Nice set. My great grandfather Simon MacKay owned Union Twist Drill in Athol Mass and purchased cards as well as Morse Twist drill in New Bedford Mass which my grandfather Thornton MacKay ran untill his death in 1956. I have many many sets ot taps dies reamersand cutting tools they made. Best tools quality wise ever produced in the world. I'm very proud of my families manufacturing history.

Welcome to GJ, James! You're in a rare and growing subgroup of members who are descendants of tool related industrialists. Others include Bill Woods, grandson of JO Mfg, L.A., Calif. (special sockets, wrenches, torque wrenches and other aviation related tools), Joshua Ferguson, grandson of Trimont, Trimo-Ferguson, and Porter-Ferguson, Roxbury, Mass. and area (auto body tools), and Kurtis Palmer, grandson of Palmer Brothers Tool Co. ("WELLOCT" pliers) in Meadville, PA. The site is like a magnet that way, which is fitting, since the owner, @Ryan, has the Cochran Speednut wrench and other tools in his family tree.

We also have the person from the screwdriver family (ryan? Rosco, fixed it, so hard to search that here) that made the yellow and black handled ones.
