I have been working on a digital version of the "Craftsman Commercial" block grinder label. This particular label is for model 397.19671 but can be readily adapted to some of the other models with the same design.

I ended up changing the font for the majority of the text to Century Gothic Bold at the suggestion of altersaddle via PM. It ended up being an excellent match  Short of finding some NOS labels from Sears, I doubt you'll have a better source for these labels! I measured my label as 2.62" (w) x 4.00" (h) so those are the measurements I used for the design.

The labels for the 3/4 HP grinder are hosted on Google Drive here. I have also edited the files for model 397.19581 1/3 HP grinder, hosted on Google Drive here. A description of the files:
  • Label Illustrator.ai: This is an editable file saved in Adobe Illustrator format. This is intended for those who wish to edit the file. You will need the Kroftsmann font installed on your computer as well as some other more standard fonts (Goudy Old Style Bold, Century Gothic Bold, Arial Rounded MT Bold, Arial Black). This is saved in "Illustrator CC" format, compatible with Illustrator 17 and above.
  • Label vector.ai: This is meant to be the best file available for printing. The label, including all fonts, has been converted entirely to vectors. This is saved in Illustrator CS3 format for compatibility with various printing services.
  • Label vector transparent.ai: Similar to Label vector.ai but with a transparent background. Works well for printing on a material that already has a light color. Keep in mind that all text will be the same color too!
  • Label.jpg: A generic JPEG with a DPI of 300 for printing. Remember, vector-based printing is preferred but this file will work if the Label vector.ai file will not work.

This took a lot of time so please reference this post for attribution of the digital conversion of this label :) Feel free to send me a PM if you have comments or questions.

I am interested in printing up a small quantity of these labels in some sort of 'metallic' sticker format. It seems that most print companies I have found require a minimum order (the most reasonable I have seen is 10). One option I have found is here. I am open to other suggestions of course. Post in this thread or send me a PM if there is interest in an option like this so we can defray the costs. Any labels printed would be sold "at cost". Cman101 is interested in printing the 1/3 HP labels so feel free to contact him about those labels

A few updates to this thread:

-I have been notified that I messed up the vector based file! It still required the fonts, meaning that I didn't properly convert the text over to vectors. I believe I have fixed the problem, so delete the old file on your computer (to avoid confusion) and download the file again to give it a try.

-I have added a new file called Label vector transparent.ai to the Google Drive. This is the exact file I uploaded to case-badges.com to obtain the result in the next bullet point.

-I have received my printed copies of the label! They were printed by case-badges.com on a brushed silver sticker background. I was a little surprised that the red color ended up being somewhat transparent during the printing process so you can see through to the brushed silver background.

I have 10 copies of this sticker so if you'd like to buy one at cost ($4.04 plus postage) let me know

What material is that sticker made of? Is it thicker like a machine badge kind of metal sticker?

Hi pendragon,

I am not sure what material they are made of. The website never really specifies. If I had to guess I would say they're a vinyl sticker. Here's the website description of them http://www.case-badges.com/metallic-rectangular-custom-labels-3-x-4-max-p-360.html
They call it a TruMetallic substrate, whatever that means :headscrat
They are thicker than your normal run-of-the-mill paper-thin sticker. They definitely aren't a piece of metal with the design printed on the top, like you'd expect from this Bay Photo-printed one shown here http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=4595412&postcount=4099
They seem to be about as thick as the original label that is on my grinder.

I can get these printed on a metal label depending on the interest here. Let me know how many of you are interested.

Jim, I am interested in hearing more about getting a metal label printed. I have a different label designed already for a different model grinder. I have been looking around at what the options are for printing it. Are you talking about a sticker-style label or a metal plate?

This label is 2-5/8in x 3-1/8in.

I also have a need for an on-off switch label. It's 1-3/8" x 3/4", with 1/4" radiused corners and either a 15/32" or 1/2" center punchout.

Michael,
The label would be printed on stainless steel sheet with an adhesive on the back (like a sticker). You would need to use a torch to get it off once it dried. The ink is also chemical and solvent resistant. I don't do the printing. I have a vendor that I use often at work for our machine tags. The problem might be order quantities. You'll get killed on the lot charge for just a couple of labels.
Best thing to do is find other interested parties and come up with a group order. That's the reason I put the caveat "depending on interest" in my original post.

Sector9, awesome job on the label and thanks for sharing.

1. If you have any labels left, I will buy one of them. While I only wish I had a 3/4 HP block, I am going to try some reverse psychology here. Buy the label and the grinder will follow.

2. I would like to get a new label done for my 1/3 HP I am restoring. Looks like some minor edits to your label would be the ticket. It is a crown top but not a Commercial. I do not have Illustrator but would be willing to compensate you for your skills and time if you are interested. I would then get multiple labels printed up and offer them at cost to interested GJ members.

Edit: size is the same as your label: 2 5/8" x 4". I did see someone on here that had done a 1/3 HP label but have been unable to locate it again. Thanks.

Hi cman,

Here's a quick edit to my file. Take a look and see if the numbers are right. I can then upload the files to Google Drive

Good morning sector9, what a nice surprise to have posted this last night and to find you already have it updated the next morning. Everything looks perfect to me. Thanks.

I will then use the same vendor you used since those came out looking really good.

Hey cman, sorry about the delay. Here are the 1/3 HP label files https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B2Sqi1r8gkMDSk5qcmNlZ2VPZTQ&usp=sharing
The file I used to print from case-badges.com was similar to the one labeled "Label Illustrator 1 3 HP Transparent vector ready.ai"

Hey sector9, no worries. I knew you would come through. I will pm you so that I can send something your way as thanks for the work you have done. Look forward to getting some ordered and seeing if any other blockheads have a need for one of these. Thanks again, Cman

Hello! I just joined the Block Grinder Club! Is there any chance that you have a label for #397.19580? Look what poor shape my label is in. ;)
