New project

I need to make some pull down stairs for the loft in my shop.
To do that I need to straighten the aluminum sections I'm making them from.
To do that, I need to get a table and welder set up.
To do that I need to make a boom for the wire driver.
So then, I got the slab of iron drug into the shop today and cut the legs cut off to tack some casters on.
Just getting to the project is a fair chore but here I go.

Royce: just curious how much that steel bench weighs? also how did you shorten the legs?

Also wondering if you finished the AWESOME lista drawers wood cabinet you built. did you fill up the drawers with nuts and bolts and ?? any more pictures to post on the old thread?

BOY do I hear you about having all your ducks or pieces of the puzzle figured out when you start almost any project.

The bench is 24"x85"x5" but I don't know what it weighs.
I cut the legs with a portaband.
I got the drawers loaded with what I had in the shop, waiting for the snow to melt to get everything out of the shed.

The two silver ones are marked caster concepts, the two green ones just have a patent number.

2 v-ways with a full length gear rack between them.

Got the wheels glued on the table today and started gathering parts for the boom.
Also drug in the stair sections that will need straightened and spliced together to make the height needed.
They came off a cat train camp and are less than perfect, but are aluminum so I can keep the weight down.

Royce: you've got SKILLS SIR and nicely done putting on the plates for the casters because that couldn't have been as easy as you make it sound.

I like the table!

I am thinking that I too suffer from the "start a project to finish a project" train of thought. I have several things that I would like to start, but there are too many projects that need to be completed as a step in the process of completing the original project (does that even make sense?) so I never seem to get started.

The stairs are in the early stages of design, I envision a Rube Goldberg deluxe special edition.
More to come, as it is made up on the fly.
Like you, I don't have a clear picture either.

I'm exactly the same. Project A needs the use of a chisel... I find one that's dull... suddenly I'm sharpening 40 chisels.

Need to rip some thin strips on a table saw... suddenly I'm buying a new table saw that entails setting the whole thing up along with building jigs I may need in months to come.

I would love to get into welding and would love that table. The casters would be a requirement for me. Beautiful job.

Not that it should, but yes it makes sense on my planet.
For me it gets worse or better depending on a given perspective.
With the attention span of 3 year old and having a few projects to do, just to build some lousy stairs, I find myself thinking about 12 other things I'd like to build.
But, you know, that's alright by me.
It's all easy,when you don't know any better!

Royce: personally you can make as many of those kind of interruptions during your original project you have my permission not that you need it. is the big swivel jaw vise in front an AMERICAN SCALE or do tell? can you take more pictures of it and give us more information on the main vise thread? we need more vises like that over there if you have time and here's the link.

Made a wee bit of headway on the boom for the welder this weekend.
Spindles welded to column.
Hubs Temporarily bolted up.
Wheels tacked to traveler.
Deck frame made for power source.
Boom arm and a couple truss cords tacked up.

I started on the boom last week and the more I looked at it the uglier it got.
So, I got off my wallet and bought some tubing and started fresh.

Royce: it wasn't clear how you were going to use those welded pieces on the floor you posted a few days ago, but nicely done and looks like your welder has a home and works ok there. While i'm trying to figure out how you are going to put tie the ladder in with that framing you NEED to tell us the story behind your DOG and that BIRD. OMG that cabinet looks AWESOME and again nice work putting that all together last month.

good luck with the project and i'll just sit back and watch and enjoy the work you do.

The dalmation and vulture were sculpted with duct tape by my youngest daughter for props for a Red Green duct tape boat regatta.
