I think you will like the push pull setup, it is definitely easier to use than a spool gun.

I don't know your situation, but hope you get past the dreaming part and are able to build some stuff.
As to the multi-tasking, here is a little tangent I got off on today, a propane cooker.
I had forged the legs and welded the grate, probably 15 years ago and found them when digging through the pile looking for junk to build the gate.
I thought it was high time to finish it.

Royce: looks like things are coming along with the benches. looks like you found some long pieces of steel from another project to make your big bench. or did you make the cut out on purpose? looking good sir and keep taking pictures and keeping us updated on your work as you have time to.
BTW since it was almost 100 down here in Seattle yesterday was it pretty warm in Fairbanks since you almost at the North Pole?

Royce: can you maybe move the vises in from the corners a few inches to put the legs in the corners? now i understand your cut outs on your beams for the vises that i didn't quite understand before.
the old school look on the tops of the fence looks pretty cool and guessing that it does the job too.

If I move the vises inward, it takes away the ability to make crosscuts at the end of the vises.
You are right in that it would be easier, but it would not be as functional to my way of thinking
I am content with the copper strips and the Mrs. loves it,so everybody wins.

Royce: while you are correct in your thinking i bet you might be able to put larger jaws on your vise made out of wood to extend them to the ends and still have the vises out of the way so you weld your legs onto the corners. i might be wrong which wouldn't be the first time, but most if not all of my wood vises can be lengthened.

Not a great gob of work got done this weekend, but had a grand fathers day celebration.
My youngest daughter made me a great sign and said it was the best advise I ever gave her!
I also clambered on to some manhole covers and curb stop covers to pave a walkway from the deck stairs to the gate with.
Still managed to get the top fastened to the small bench, but still need to put a border around it and also got the 6' bench framing done.

Nice work! You get distracted by other quasi-related projects just like I do. This weekend I went into the shop to finish up a few vises, clean up my new-to-me anvil, and work on a transmission rebuild. I ended up building a rolling bench (portable dirty room) to mount a vise, grinder, belt sander, etc. Didn't touch the vises, anvil, or transmission...

I have to make the decision of what vise or vises to mount on the hydrant.
I'm thinking either the 6" american scale or a pair of 4 inchers.
I don't know how soon that can happen, as the chores are stacking up.
What I like about that profound bit of advise is that it covers most all situations!
I've not seen a path made of manhole covers either.
I have 6 right now and should get 2 more next week, wish I had a dozen or more, but will have to make do with 8.

So then, it was brought to my attention last night that today is our anniversary.
This happens this way every year with every important date that I really should remember, so this was not an anomaly.
That fact did not help with the feeling of panic I was overcome with.
I thought a bit and figured she really deserved a trophy for putting up with my shortcomings for 37 years.

Far be it for me to let something I should do get in the way of something I want to do.
So, like a fart in a frying pan I bounced from this to that and back on a few projects this weekend, finishing absolutely nothing.
Got the 6' bench top cut to finish size and drilled the countless holes in the framing for screwing it down.
Layed out the stepping stones for the pathway, still waiting for 2 more next week,so I can set them and backfill with RAP.
Stripped the paint off the hydrants.
I had intentions of painting them some antique color, but the project manager saw them at this stage and said leave what paint is left, it looks good just the way it is.
Who am I to argue?, particularly when it means less work for me!

Royce: as my sig line says it's the preparation that takes up maybe more time than actually doing a project to do it right and your stuff is always looking good as it's finished. keep up the great work and ideas it's fun to watch.
I also agree with the CEO that those fire hydrants look good just the way they are so maybe rub some BLO on them and get to making a vise or grinder stand out of them. good luck with that because I still don't see it in my head.

Love the hydrant stands. You Sir do some amazing work. I love the idea of using what you have on hand or what falls into your lap.
My Dad has a bowling alley as a work bench for over 25 years with no issues. His is sitting on a base he made. It's 16 feet long double sided full of drawers. I've used bowling alley benches for year also. There very heavy duty and cool all at the same time.

Royce: i have to say i'm amazed at the skill and creative juices you have in your mind to make an old hydrant into something like that. i was liking the first design you made with the American Scale #79 and was thinking you could make it steadier by putting a big piece of plate on the bottom of the stand and then you changed it to just fit right over the top of it.
some of us that don't have the tools or skills would love to know how you cut that plate (is it half inch?) and drill the holes. also measuring up all those holes to line up i'm guessing you have a punch to mark dead center or do tell?
did you round off the sides of the plate with a belt sander or grinder?
they both look great and i like the patina your wife talked you into keeping on the hydrants.

of course having some of the correct tools and the skills to use them is a big plus. i'm guessing the weather is pretty good this week since we have mid 70's and sunshine, but not sure how the weather is that far north compared to ours.

I find the actual work of laying out, cutting, drilling and welding routine.
Figuring out what is going to function well and be pleasing to the eye, for me seems to be the challenge.
For me, completing a successful design is where the joy comes from.
Lots of rain here lately.
The shop is a deluxe mess right now and I have not landed a spot for the vises yet
I have too much equipment for the square footage and hope to build a 12' attached shed off of the side to place the woodworking tooling in.
That will free up a gob of space to hopefully make a workable space in the main shop.

Royce, you are one of the few that has many skills + blessed with great imagination and design to make beautiful looking projects. Your reference to Rube Goldberg definitely shows you have a taste for steam punk.
As far as your family saying you have a nose for garbage....if only I could be so lucky to have your nose!
Last thing, among all these other great traits you have, you are quite prolific, banging out these great projects.

Royce: WELL DONE again sir. looks like it will not only keep up with the industrial look around your property, but also keep the mud off your deck better.
looking at your other thread did you find a permanent spot for that fish wood burner or is it what is heating up your shop? it's quite the project you took on with that one and i bet it not only looks amazing it also is probably heating up the areas you want it to.
here's the link to the thread with a few of your other projects since you seem to have a couple of these going on so most of us following your projects can find them all or at least the ones you have time to share with us. like you said some of us spend the 24 hours a day differently than others and looks like you stay up 24/7 with all the projects you seem to start and finish. keep it up and again just saying I (we) are enjoying what you post.
