The Plomb 1/2" female ratchet on the left in this picture I picked up a couple years ago. Didn't know much about it at the time and still don't, except the seller suspected it was used by the Navy.

I bought this ratchet knowing it was just half of a tool, as the seller also had a picture of a complete tool for reference. Note the slot down the beam (actually a tube, and the 3 holes down one side.

It carries the part number 5450, which is strange to me as that is the part number of a normal 15" Plomb or Proto 1/2" drive ratchet.

It is pictured next to a Wf-38, and a 5449 for reference.

Well, I was not too sure I'd ever find the rest of this thing because I've never seen any others.

Then the other day I stumbled upon this:

Plomb and Proto.

There are three stops on the side to lock in place with the adjustment screw knob.

The range goes from about 9-3/4" to 13-1/4" overall length.

Every piece of the arm, including the tube, the shaft, the handle, the knob, even the washer inside the handle, is stamped with a different corresponding part number on the Proto. I don't see anything else on the Plomb tube.

Each part number ends with an M in a circle. I wonder if this stands for military?

That is really slick. Never knew they existed.

Same here. The seller of the Plomb too apparently. It was in a junk box lot on Ebay that went unsold for the longest time. I thought it was someone's one off hack job so I never would have bid, but at the same time I thought it quite curious. Eventually he relisted it by itself with a picture in the ad that he received from another Plomb collector of a complete tool. I still have the picture saved. Let's just say he asked a little more the second time around after knowing what it was.
Sweet 3Bay, on my list!

Wow! Very cool! I've never seen one before.

Thanks guys! It is a neat one.
Makes you stop and wonder at all the different tools we have yet to find. :rocker:

Woody, it never ceases to amaze me. Stuff out there that still hasn't been uncovered. At least in the GJ world. That's a big part of what I enjoy about tools, finding new (old) things and the many variations out there.

On the circle M...that might be a subcontracting forge...?
It looks exactly like a logo that appears on many Ford toolkit tools. Two of the suppliers of those were M names...one showed a plain M, the other M in a circle. One was Manzel and the other I think Moore drop forging, can't remember which used the circle.

Good point. Turns out it is Moore who used that.

It looks like same handle that's on my WWII bomb hoist. No markings on that handle however but how many handle mfrs. are there?

This reminds me I still need to clean up that bad boy.

Thought I'd seem most of the Plomb stuff out there, but this one was new to me to!
