Sears Evolv brand hex bit snapped like a twig

While the wheels were off, I figured I’d break the old rotor set screw free. I put on a 6mm hex bit onto my 3/8" breaker bar, and the hex bit snapped like a twig instantly. Used the stubby hex bit from my new Sunex set.

I've already replaced my Lisle Torx bits with something from Vim. I am now tempted to get another set of hex bits. At least the smaller ones. I have extra-long Hex bits, but they don't feel strong. Are the Sunex stubby hex impacts adequate?

Those screws ya know dont come off all to easy. I usually use one of those smack with a hammer type hand impact drivers.

Flat head cap screws like to lock themselves.

Take a hammer and punch an whack the head of the screw real hard. That will break the taper loose and you can remove it with a hex key.

Smack the head of the screw square with a hammer, before you touch it with a socket.

Works almost everytime. Lol.

FYI, take the entire set with you for exchange as I was told they don't sell or exchange for singles in the Evolv line.

Mine are limited use in a travel box. I broke or twisted the tiny one, 3mm I think.

Thanks for the hammer tip. I forgot that they trade them in. I will try to bring it back and switch them for a new set.

Does Evolv also have a lifetime replacement, or just C-man ?

Evolv has a lifetime replacement (unlike the old Sears "Companion" line that did not), but the fine print is different, and not as customer friendly as Craftsman.

Huh, I have a friend that is a pro mechanic and he bought the same set last year and hasn't broke one yet.

They round off before they break in my experience. I have 3 sets in my box I loan to people I don't like

Yep. So you need to save your receipt. And then, when you go through a box of 5 year old receipts and find out that they've faded completely to white (as thermally printed receipts do), then what do you do?

Lifetime my ***. That's for the lifetime of the proof of sale. A load of **** if you ask me, but my guess is that if you're all nicey nice with customer service, you'll probably get a replacement regardless.

So, my Sunex stubby impact hex sockets are good enough to be my main hex sockets?

How many hex socket sets do you need? Quit buying cheap **** and posting about how you broke it or hate it or want to upgrade it.

Buy once cry once.

Any impact tool is good enough to be your main go to and probably preferred, especially Sunex. They are a very reputable tool brand. I have many different sets of Sunex impact tools.

Also, if anyone decides they need/want to buy Evolve tools, it is wise to pay with debit/credit card. Now you will forever have records/receipts for warranty purposes..

6mm and a 3/8" BREAKER BAR...
ok...time to invest in something called penetrating oil. PB blaster is amazing, don't be smoking when using it
WD 40 is similar. Soak for a day or two, try it again.
Leave the breaker bar in the toolbox.
6mm is tiny, start small and work up.
I like the tap with a hammer idea from CJM8515
In my experience with brake fittings, tighten (a little bit) to 'crack' the fastener free, then gently try the removal.
Soak...soak...soak!

Why all the drama? Evolv is a **** quality line for men without toolboxes trying to put together Ikea furniture under the scornful gaze of their short haired wives.

The point Im trying to make is that if you're the type that needs tools to make a living, you're not going to be buying Evolv line tools anyway. If for some reason you do have them and they break, it wont even by worth your time and effort to go make a warranty claim for a $6 set of hex sockets.

So why get spun up over Evolv 'lifetime warranty'?

Oh and for what its worth, I put a 7mm hex socket (China Craftsman) on a 12in breaker bar last night to break loose a caliper bolt on a Mazda, is that a wrong use of the tool?

Yea I didn't understand that either? A 6mm hex socket, that is 3/8" drive, on a 3/8" drive breaker bar...:headscrat:headscrat Seems legit to me.

If you take your time and use penetrating lubricant or heat, there should be no problem in doing such.

Take notes OP so this doesn't happen again. Certain things you can't just yank on and expect them to break loose. Especially stuff that goes through a lot of abuse and heating & cooling. Instead invest on items such as: Hammer, punch, reversible impact driver, penetrating lube, torch, etc and keep the Sunex sockets as your go to.

I used the stubby impact Sunex 6mm hex bit again today.
Put it on my 1/2" Fuel and it zipped the rotor set screw right off.
Impact is less likely to strip than breaker bar, right?

The Evolv line is for folks who don't want to spring for Harbor Freight quality tools....
