Well i have a 20x30 detached garage that i will be storing my 1929 in once it gets back from the upholstery shop. been working on the car for about 2 years now and figure another year till generally complete. the garage has a front section that is 20x20 and a back area/ shop 20x10 that is open to the front via a 8x8 opening in the middle. there is 1 window in the front and 3 in the back section. Window up front is in the side wall with the man door, then two in the rear section are 2 in back wall and one in side wall. All windows are SMALL maybe 22x30, to small to put window unit in them. The walls are insulated and dry walled. the ceiling is open type, as i have storage in the rafters. put on brand new roof this spring.
After dying all summer trying to work out in a 100 degree garage, i have decided to step up and put in some cooling/ heat. i put in a Comfort Zone CZ220 Heater last winter to kill the chill. main concern it dehumidification, and getting the temps to under 80 F. base calculations state i need at least a 13000 BTU unit.
Now looking at either:
1- 18000 BTU window unit, wall mounting it along the long wall opposite the windows and man door. and moving air around with a fan. Est $550
2- 15000 BTU PTAC unit w/ Heat pump and 3.5kW heater, mounting it the same location as above. Est $800
option 1 should handle the cooling and dehumid but in winter would have to rely on the 5kw Comfort Zone, when i wanted heat, as I do not run it unless needed since it spins the meter !!
option 2 should handle the cooling and dehumid, though it is not as powerful in BTU it has heat Pump that will run down to 40 F which would help keep the climate under control. and back up Heat Strip 3.5kW if needed. mainly 3.5 kW strip for defrost and such.
would hte PTAC be worth the extra $$ for heat pump and such ?? looking at room size ratings a 18k window says about 800 where a 15k PTAC says about 700 ??
