been debating o HOW to climate control the detached garage, 20x30 main reason was for the humidity and the 1929 Chevrolet stored inside. Detached Garage & Climate Control\

First step was to insulate the rafters, walls were already done when i bought it, but want to keep as MUCH Heatings/ Cooling in as i can. took care of that here: Garage Roof/ Rafter Insulation... To Vent or Not to Vent ?

Did a ton of research on window vs PTAC vs Portable. decided to go with the PTAC, actually a mini PTAC.

Went with a Islandaire Series 26
...these units are 26" wide x 16 tall

this is a 12k BTU unit w/ heat Pump & 3.5k emergency heat backup/ defrost
uses R410a, 220V unit @ 20A Circuit

measured sleeve, and then marked location on wall where it was going in:

Then cut out hole, framed up wall/ support and secured sleeve

works great and runs nicely, is pretty quiet little unit.

granted it has not been HOT or COLD since i installed it, BUT it has maintained the humidity and temp. humidity was around 55% and dropped it to around 30-35% after a few days. figure it will balance out and settle in.

see how it does this winter on COLD days, and then NEXT summer on HOT days here !!

Well so far this unit has done a super job keeping up with the cold spells. garage is a constant 61 whenever i go out there. also humidity is way down, was 75%+ before install and now stays around 30% !!

I am surprised you are able to keep the humidity that low with the thermostat set to 61F,

compare ?? I like the mini PTAC because it has built in Heat Pump AC and backup heat Strip.

Basically they are the units like in a Hotel, this is just a mini, shorter size.

Very inspiring, looks like just what I need. How does PTCA compare with regular 'window' air conditioners?

Fairly similar to a window A/C. The biggest differences are the extra valves inside to allow the PTCA to work as a heat pump and the fact that a PTCA is designed to be mounted in a specific size opening with no adjustablity.

They are not a efficient as a good mini-split heat pump, but they are much less expensive. The resistance heat strip will really get you in the wallet if you use it a lot.

BTW, Mr BearsFan, you did and awesome job of making your "hole" !

Thanks you sir... measure a few times, cut only ONCE:)
PTAC = Packaged Terminal Air Conditioner
PTHP = Packaged Terminal Heat Pump

Standard PTAC size is 16 high x 42 wide, most are about 13-14 deep or so, tons of people make them and sale them, since they are used in almost every hotel !! many options up to 18k BTU w/ & w/o heat pump and heat strip up to usually 5kw

the mini is only 16 high x 26 wide x 13-14 deep, not as many options, also most are only up to 12k BTU w/ & w/o heat pump and heat strip up to usually 3.5kw

best thing is, WHEN you have to replace one, you just buy the unit, slide out old, slide in new and away you go :)

i was looking at window units, but like the heat pump idea, saves some money and get a reliable heat source, plus back up heat strip which is also used for defrost mode to keep unit from freezing up.

Well it has been doing a great job maintaining 61F in the cold and snow we had recently. anytime i go out there it is at the set temp. and it is NOT runing all the time which makes the power bill happy..

Looking at options for an upcoming garage build. Where did you get that one, how much?

Does it bring in fresh air or is it just running inside air across coils?

Thanks

I bought ti direct from PTAC, INC. they ONLY Sell NEW units to consumers, and NEW or USED to COMMERCIAL. this was the monthly special when i ordered. call them, they are very helpful and knowledgeable. they ship freight and fast, got mine in 24 hours, but i am only 8 hours away from them. also bought the sleeve, as the kit did NOT include one.

it cycles inside air, and continuously samples temperature. many options and settings, i have been happy with it. cooling is not an issue in my 600 sq ft garage, that is poorly insulated.

I have the Brochure, Manual, Install Guide. but too large to upload here !!

These are the same units you see in most motel rooms and installed in some apartments. It'a a way to get AC and heat without any other equipment. Through the wall AC .. is just an AC unit with a sleeve so as not needing a window ... no heat. (a few do) It's a common way to add heat and air to a sunroom addition.

They are fine for small spaces -- not as efficient as some other solutions .. some are very noisy. The heat pump units remove the high cost of heating w/ resistance in mild climates. When I looked a while ago the units can't operate in HP mode down very cold .. so you end up using the resistance. To the OP .. how cold can it be outside and still have the unit run the HP?

I am debating on doing the same thing. I am going to put up a wall and have about 500 sq ft x 12 ceiling in my pole barn, walls are insulated. I am debating between PTHP or a mini split, right now my biggest dilemma is whether or not I will leave it in permanently or take the wall back down later. I am getting ready to build a house where my barn is, just trying to get some living quarters there temporarily.

i got the mini version 26" vs the standard 40" width, same internals, smaller sleeve & package (hole in wall)

i got the heat pump since it does get cold here, but not too many days below freezing. i believed it is good to down to 40 F before electric heat kicks in. this unit has a 3.5Kw heat. which is also used to keep the coil from freezing.

Interesting - I have a window heatpump unit that's good down to 40F as well. I'm working on swapping the controls and adding a defrost board to mine. mine only has 1kW strip heat.
