It's finally time to stop lurking and show what I've got on the go. I'm a big aircooled VW fan and I've run out of space for toys, between a bug, a karmann ghia and my brothers boat there's no room left. I'm the process of replacing the old shed and carport combo with a new 12x12m shed so will soon have plenty of room.

Overview of whats going in:
- 12x12m
- 3m wall height 15deg roof pitch
- 2x double roller doors to the back lane
- 1x roller dooe and 1x PA door into back yard

Completed so far:
- Replaced old sewer line running underneath new shed
- Demolished old carport and shed
- New shed delivered

Still to go:
- Build Shed!
- Run power to shed, getting 3phase to the house and then trenching it to the shed
- Pour slab and figure out what floor coating to go with

Couple of pics to show what I started with

Replacing the sewer line under the shed:

My place still had the old ceramic sewer lines running down the back, I wanted to replace this before they deteriorate and I need to cut out a freshly poured slab to replace the pipes.

The sewer runs to about 2m deep at the back, so its a lot to dig up

Demolition:

The lean to and the plum tree were the first to go

Dad and I did most of the demo work ourselves, didn't take too long. Two days of work to remove all the sheets and framework shown in the above picture.

Welcome mate, sounds and looks like a great project. Would love to see some pics of your veedubs (I had a bug as my daily for 8 years a few years back, so have a soft spot for them). And make sure you let us know what city you're from too.

I don't have any recent pics of the bug, it's also 1960 and it's my daily. I don't have a recent pic of it, but it hasn't changed much since I've had it, and I've owned it longer than I've had a drivers licence.

Update on the work completed today. Builder measured out and marked up locations for all the footings for the shed. All the footings were dug and installed and concrete poured for the footings.

Digging the holes for the footings

Showing the pins which are cast into the concrete footings to support the columns. All the pins were set to height for the desired floor height then held in place for the concrete to be poured.

The last pictures gives a good idea of how it all goes together. Columns bolt to the pins cast into the footings.

Hey man, that's gonna be an awesome shed!!!

I'm a fellow VW nut, and also in Adelaide....small world

I think I recognise the White Karmann vert in the wedding photo....wouldn't be Andy T's by any chance?

Hey mate did you have any drama with council for your shed? or are you asking for forgiveness rather than permission?

Oh and that sure as hell aint no bobcat you were driving, it was a Skid Steer Loader! ((Im a mechanic at Toyota Forklifts, in Sydney, have to work on that rubbish haha!)

I've received full development approval from council, only concession from initial submission was to have the shed 1m back from the rear boundary. Honestly surprised they let me have it as max recommended area for outbuildings in the council area is 60m2.

There's been a good amount of progress with the shed build however not as much as planned due to bad weather, was too windy for doing the roof sheets over the weekend. Monday the weather was fine and the builder powered through.

The roof is insulated, picture below shows the insulation being rolled out over the wire mesh. The insulation is a reflective foil with fiberglass matting.
View media item 78061
Roof was installed section at a time, where roof sheets would be laid over the insulation progressively.
View media item 78062
Completed roof with purlins for the walls started and header beam for rear roller door installed.
View media item 78063
Wall sheets going up, note window and personal access door are cut into the sheets after they have been installed.
View media item 78064
The roller doors arrive!
View media item 78065
Picture of the roof sheets all installed and the front walls sheets started, flashing and roof capping still to be installed.
View media item 78066
Personal access door installed. Unfortunately I didn't check the size soon enough, I had ordered an 1100mm wide door and they supplied an 800mm door, so they will replace it later on as it is an approx 2 week wait for the door to be fabricated.
View media item 78067
Roller door installation start, they've only been hung at this stage, still need tracks to be installed

Wow, looking good.

Its been windy here as well. Good to see you have added some blanket with the insulation foil, that's something I regret not doing here.

Thanks for the update.

Got more work completed on the shed today.

Start with some tidy up jobs including slight adjustments to the lengths of the front sheets to better align.
View media item 78069
Installing the window above the area which will have the main work benches.
View media item 78070
Finishing the roller door installation, setting the tension on the doors, installing tracks and installing the control boxes and programming the remote controls. The two large doors to the back lane are powered and have the remote controls. The smaller door into the back yard is manual open only at this stage as it wont be often used; although if I do find a cheap enough motor it may be powered sometime in the future
View media item 78071
A good photo showing how the shed fits into the landscape of the back lane
View media item 78072
Barge board flashings installed at each end although only temporary at this stage as I'm waiting for the corner flashing to arrive before the barge boards can be finalised. The overhang extending past the walls will be cut back once remaining flashing arrives. There is also additional flashing required to run vertically along where the roller doors meet the walls.
View media item 78073
Picture showing how the view from my backyard looks with the shed installed.
View media item 78074
First night for cars to actually be stored in the shed
View media item 78075

Progress will take stop for a while as the replacement PA door and flashings are being made up.

It definitely gets too hot in summer to go without any insulation in the shed, I'm hoping the roof insulation is enough to take the edge off. If I need more cooling later on I might consider picking up an evap cooler for the shed

Awesome! Love the veedubs and that's a real nice size shed, especially for a suburban block.

Thanks! and yup, doesn't really get any bigger on a suburban block.

Progress looks great. Did you take down the side fences for the install? Must have good neighbours.

The shed runs boundary to boundary so shed walls replace both side fences. I still need to reinstate an approx 1m section of fence once the corner flashings are in place. Funny enough in my council you don't need permission from neighbors to install outbuildings even if they're on the boundary, so I didn't even need to tell my neighbors about the shed if i didn't want to. I get along really well with both my neighbors so they both knew well in advanced what I've been planning; they're only comments were "that's really big" and "I hope you don't want me to pay for any of it"

Solid shed!!

Any reason why you didn't go with some skylight sheets on the roof?

WOW, love the VW's, and your avatar. How did you make that?
Anyway, its interesting to see how other countries build stuff. Is your frame painted silver or is that some kind of coating to prevent rust? It almost looks like aluminum?:dunno: Man those are some BIG doors, should be able to put 6 bugs at a time thru those doors:lol:
I can see why the council approved your shop, its one of the best looking down that alley. I hope someone doesn't TAG your walls with graffiti, that would ****!
Are you going to open a small business out in the new shop?

made the avatar as a flash animation then exported it as a gif, did it a few years back when I used to be better at that sort of thing.

The frame is galvanized steel, they coat normal steel in molten zinc which helps the steel last a lot longer without rusting; very commonly used for shed in Australia.

Not going to do any sort of business, shed is just for hobbies.

In the process of getting quotes for a slab to be poured, looking at doing 135mm slab, maybe bit thicker for where I think I'll put in the hoist

Solid shed!!

Was more worried about the shed not getting silly hot during summer. I figured I can open up the doors or turn on the lights to get brighter but its harder to close the skylights when its too hot.
