Hello there people!

My name is Steven, i'm 29 years old, and i live in Scotland!

Sorry for the long intro but this is my first real post in here, i made an old thread for my first garage but it was a retrospective thread about a a garage i had built and moved on from. (The link for which can be found here)

The old place was named Dodgy Daves Cut 'n' Shut Car Showroom after a car show i went to with a group of friends and our theme was a used car showroom, the sign i made for the show came home with me and was put up in the garage and so the name stuck!

So after moving on from the old place i have since lived in a house with no garage for almost 3 years. My girlfriend and i started looking for a place about 6 months ago and one of my MUST HAVES was, at the very least, a large single garage that i could work on a car inside. When the house we eventually bought came up in a town we liked, for a price we liked, and having all the things we both wanted from a house (at least 2 bathrooms and a utility room for her, a huge garage for me) we put an offer in and it was accepted above all others.

So we move in 2 weeks today (May 5th we get the keys) and although the garage wont be number 1 priority, i will make sure every other job gets done quick quick so i can make a start!

When we first viewed the house the garage was full of the owners **** so we havent managed to get proper measurments and we havent yet seen what utilities are inside in terms of electrics etc. There is definitely power and light inside but i'm not sure as to how many outlets there are yet.

Inital measurements say the garage is around 5 meters wide by 5 meters deep give or take a little.

My plan is to use the full back wall and install a wall of ikea kitchen units on the floor with worktop to be used as a bench top and my toolbox in the middle. i have made a small drawing and figured out widths of different units availible from ikea and should be able to fill the whole back wall... all of that is dependant on the final size of the garage as i have a porsche boxster which is 4.5m long and with 400mm deep units i may struggle to fit the car in and work on it should i ever need too....

I have been collecting tools and other things for the garage, so i have a few metal clad double wall outlets should i need more outlets and i have three 5ft LED strip lights which will replace the old batons!

Anyways heres a couple pictures

I will continue to update this as time goes on with the work i do to it!

so i've been doing a bit more thinking and since the only storage i want to have in the garage will be on the back wall (to minimise clutter) i wanted to utilise as much of the space as possible, so i went on the ikea website and got prices for all different sized units and played around in excel... heres what i've come up with!

i think for the cost vs space i am decided with the bottom right version, except the units next to the toolbox wont have drawers, cutting the cost down by around another ~£45...

so now that i am in the house a few weeks i thought i would update with some progress!
since the house was actually quite nice inside and needed very minimal work we decided to use the garage as a dumping ground for all the furniture and ****, and then move it in as required... it would make me want to finish the house much quicker so that i would have to empty the garage so i could start work.

so as of day 1 it began to fill up, and quick!

34611370100_7cc3aeb23f_b.jpg

i got my little car down to the garage after driving the hire van for a few days!

34866945181_43e8819ff7_b.jpg

all my cabinet parts arrived from ikea, there were around 25 boxes and a massive bag of around 60 hinges all together which took up a lot of space!

34866939831_4ac51e993e_b.jpg

by this point it was extremely difficult to move inside and there was absolutely no space to build units!

34866937661_e735a67671_b.jpg

at this point i really needed to get a tiny bit of space so i could build at least one small unit, which i could then fill up, which would make more space to build another unit which could be filled up... and you get the picture!

so i managed to make a small space within the garage which meant i could start to build one cabinet...

the cabinets i purchased are Ikea Metod black/brown base units (all of which are 37cm deep which is smaller than stadard but needed for fitting cars in the garage) and i used Veddinge grey doors.

34866930311_08dd5660fe_b.jpg

this gave me space to start tidying things away, which meant more space to build more cabinets..

and then even more...

so taking a break from cabinet building and using the daylight i had on my days off work i started on the lighting... i purchased three 5 foot LED strip light fittings and replaced the old 4ft tube fittings with these...

the old lights in place, notice yellow and dull!

34866926751_c2cdf0a626_b.jpg

middle light replaced, longer and a much crisper light!

34188349093_54e519ee82_b.jpg

and all 3 replaced... much brighter, better spread of light and a nicer place to work!

getting back into cabinet building a finished off one complete side... i had barely enough space to build the tall unit but with a little help from my girlfriend we got it righted and moved into place... i have been using gorrila wood glue in the building process to hopefully make the cabinets last the little longer!

34866924011_46fd71b6c9_b.jpg

soon after i had a whole back wall of cabinets built! i was filling them up as i built them so now lots of my tools and "things" have a home. i really enjoy knowing that if i need a screw, which cabinet to go in to to find them, and if i need a cloth or bucket to clean a car i know exactly where i'll find it!

34866920171_44b98be76c_b.jpg

one thing that has annoyed me was deciding how to line up the cabinets on the wall.... i know that both sides are symetrical, so i thought i would space each end cabinet the same distance from each outside wall... however the coarse of block that juts out in the middle of the back wall, is not actually in the middle, so now it looks like i have offset everything to the right... i feel as if i may have to box in that coarse of blockwork to hide that fact...

Nice work so far.

My, that filled up quick, keep at it and it'll soon come together. :)
Mine emptied and filled umpteen times before the house was finished and it only took a quick three years.

Nice looking place you've bought.
Regards
Steve

thanks! yeah i stupidly said it could be used as a dumping ground whilst we moved... in my head i knew that if the place was filled with **** it would make me more determined to empty all the boxes and move all the stuff out of there quicker! i'm hoping that i can keep up the momentum!

Looking great so far Steven.

thanks mate!

now all the units were in place, lined up straight, screwed into each other and solid i started the worktops. i had one long length of ikea worktop (concrete effect) that would be cut into half and would make 2 workbenches.

34866918381_89d0235548_b.jpg

there is a small overhang on the smaller units, it lines up with the front of the double cupboard and sits flush against the wall. i am going to put some kind of upright or backsplash on the wall to cover the concrete but this wont be till a bit later.

Looks great! Have you any plans to paint the walls? I made the mistake of getting my whole garage set up then decided I wanted to paint the walls and had to remove everything. Same for the floor. If it makes any difference to your decision the white walls made a massive difference to the space - made it feel more finished. I went with the cheapest B&Q masonry paint!

Agreed, get it painted - it was the best thing I did in mine. Cheers!

thanks! i decided against painting mines, mainly for the reasons that i was excited to move in to a house and not have to paint anything (the house itself was basically walk in condition) and the amount of **** inside meant i wouldnt get to the majority of the wall space without risk of knocking something or covering all my stuff in paint... i may decide to do so in the future but i also plan on fitting 3 more lights (towards the front end of the garage above where the doors are) and possibly fitting some under cabinet lights above the benches so i should make up for the lack of reflection off the walls with sheer light power!

nice job so far!

thanks!

i decided to make my own handles for the cupboards. 1, to minimise costs as i needed ~14 handles, 2, so i could make them custom and to my own lengths and 3, just because i could...

these are made from stainless steel, the ends were tapped to M4, the handles were polished and then fitted to the cupboards with a cap screw from behind... i may have gotten one handle squint on one of the larger doors.. i may or may not replace the door at some point...

34188366223_4cd9be90b3_b.jpg

34188365773_713ea5db2c_b.jpg

the next part was wall mounting the units above the benches... this took 3 trips to the hardware shop to get the correct sized rawl plugs and screws as i dont have much experiance with these and i was scared they would fall off the wall...

rails cut and hung

first cabinet hung

so once the upper cabinets were done on one side and i felt confident that they werent going to fall off the wall i continued on and fitted out the other side, spacing them so they sat straight and screwing them all together...

34188362653_4f772301b8_b.jpg

34188361903_a632303996_b.jpg

there was still a whole host of **** littering the garage floor. there was a lot of trash, a lot of boxes were half full but the majority of it is going to be going in a shed out back of the garage or up in the loft of the house...

34188361103_cde89beb9d_b.jpg

i spent a fair bit of time condensing boxes, hanging stuff on walls or putting it into the rafters, my plan being to make one bay empty... some of this needed to be inventive...

Painting would make this place so much brighter inside, which is important if you plan on doing work in there. Dark walls like that absorb so much light, you need a lot more lumens for the same result.

I will seriously consider doing the walls next year after I have more lighting up and an empty space! It's actually ok to work on just now but I also feel a lot of light is being soaked up because of the **** I have all around me and because I only have 3 strips towards the back! I will consider it though!

so in terms of power in the garage there is only 1 single outlet on the very back wall and it is very inconveniantly placed right behind the tool box!...

my plan is to re-run all the cable inside 20mm plastic conduit right round the top of the garage in a ring main circuit with drop downs for 4 double outlets, one just inside each front door and one each side of the toolbox above each workbench.

i have mounted the 2 workbench boxes and will be picking up the conduit tonight and begin installing over the weekend with any luck!

34835453892_1bd5aea13b_b.jpg

i have also moved every piece of **** from the right hand bay and moved it over to the left side... its very full and busy but my shed was delivered last night so i can hopefully move alot of it soon!

34959154106_4a6c1f2094_b.jpg

34959152736_6644bef9bf_b.jpg

and this has allowed me to get a car inside for the first time!

this is my favourite picture i've taken in a long time!

34188351673_77a3582367_b.jpg

and heres a little peak inside one of the tall cupboards... this one is full of detailing gear!

34188350703_43bfd22fbc_b.jpg

thats it pretty much up to date.. except now the polo is outside and my boxster is inside and getting some work done!

i'll be able to keep this updated as and when things happen now!

Great transformation so far, the ikea cabinets are a great solution, and they look really slick! Are you going to clad the ceiling at all, or leave it open for storage? It might help with reflecting light if you close it in a bit and paint it white.

I came for the MKII, Left disappointed. Pics?

if its mk2 you want, it is mk2 you will receive... (ps, the name refers to the fact that this is my second garage with a re-used name, its just lucky i have a owned a mk2 golf hahah!)

this is my old one i owned around 6 years ago... didnt have it long enough for it to even make it on the road but i did enjoy working on it...

thanks for that! i havent seen many people use the ikea cabinets, but to me they are a great size (and availible in 2 depths and all the widths you could ask for). also the colour choice was great aswell! i really wanted grey doors and these ones were perfect! and the price for me was a real plus point!
thats a plan i may also go ahead with in the future, but for the time being i use alot fo the space up there to store all sorts, from bmx's to snowboard gear to car parts...

i got a bit of work in over the weekend in between friends visiting and other such things...

no pictures but i will post some later!

we built a shed out back of the garage, its roughly 8x6ft and will house alot of the stuff from the left hand bay of the garage. there is a little space behind it for wheels and tyres, which leaves more space inside for other ****! all thats needed is felt for the roof which i will hopefully do this evening!

inside the garage i have started to run power through conduit and i decided to tackle the more difficult bits to begin with... i have the indoor lighting working again and power run to the holes which lead outside for the side lighting, they just havent been refitted yet...
i also started to run the 240v 2.5mm which will feed the 4 double outlets around the garage... again, the hard bits have been done, its all relatively simple from here on in...

i have also mounted a white board for doodling, drawing and making notes when in the garage!

so i have a few pictures from last night!

i removed the polo from the garage as i needed to get my boxster in for a little bit of cosmetic and maintenance work... its fits in, but its quite snug... its workable though! will be even better once the other bay is open!

the washer jets for the windscreen werent working so i found the problem with those, i removed the front wheels and inner arch linings as i thought this was where the washer issue was (turned out it was something just behind the battery). the car also got a full wash, sealant applied and then a coat of wax, along with windows polished and a fair bit of interior cleaning! looks quite shiny in the pictures!

35230921986_dd2e2fa545_b.jpg

my shed also arrived and my girlfriend and i built it over the weekend and last night i got some felt for the roof to make it fully water tight!
my plan is to fill the shed over the next few nights, starting tonight with any luck!

35230921206_2b643db0fc_b.jpg

the other main focus of the week was to fix the power in the garage! i had decided on 4 double outlets spread around the walls but i have since decided to add a couple extras... and the plan from the start was to run the whole lot in trunking which has been enjoyable..

so another update, sans pictures...

i have completed the electrics in the garage, i now have 4 double outlets and 2 single outlets spaced around the garage and its all wired as a ring main inside conduit piping.
i also got another 3 LED strip lights which have been installed towards the front of the garage giving a ton more light!
i have moved alot of stuff outside into the shed which has given me a ton of space to put my new Metabo table saw!
not much more to do now other than enjoy using the space ive made for myself!

heres a couple little picture updates!

made myself a fold away bench which is going house my new Metabo table saw and chop saw. made it fold away so that if i ever need the space its easy to move!

35862330974_de538b66d0_b.jpg

put up some old ikea rails i had in my old kitchen, one above each bench... good for hanging the often used tools and stuff!

35862329624_ceb76f5362_b.jpg

and i also installed some downlighters under the top cabinets that shine down and give just a little more light on the benches. also finally bit the bullet and mounted the vice to the left bench. i think this bench is now fully finished except for a little bit of trim under the cabinets to hide the feet!

Nice! Did you bolt the machines to the table? and did you by coincidence make a picture while it is folded?

Nice to see more European garages (mostly smaller ;-) ) around here.

thanks, i was sure i had a picture of it all folded up but for some reason i cant seem to find it! i will be out in the garage tonight so i will snap a shot of it!
the machines are not bolted down but both are heavy enough that they do not move, i had marked out spots to drill through but then realised that sometimes if i am only using one machine i like to have just the one on the table at a time!
and thank you, i also like looking for the smaller garages as its better for finding inspiration and ideas!

Sorry it took so long but here is a folded up picture! Has 2 nice strong hinges for the table top and folds nice and smooth. The legs also have 2 hinges which pivot freely on there own aswell so it’s a nice easy motion to get up and down...

so this update isnt really garage related but its just more life related.
since moving in i have been slowly setting up and clearing out my games room which is one of the bedrooms upstairs (4 bed house for 2 of us + dog, one extra bedroom is my games room and the smallest bedroom is a walk in closet right next to our master bedroom).

so heres a couple pictures. i was going to replace the carpet to something darker but the carpet is relatively new and good condition so i'll leave as is for the time being. however one thing i have to do is paint that back wall (the flowery one) a battleship grey colour of which i have 1 and a half pots waiting.

38421198831_215e1609fd_b.jpg

this is the tv side. the unit, i built myself for my old house and i couldnt bear to sell it when we moved so i kept it. inside is a whole host of old gaming consoles and a large tv. also some nick naks i have made/collected along the way.

38421194381_cc90e58756_b.jpg

everything in this room is recycled from the old house or made by me, from the old tv unit to the coffee table. the 2 armchairs are made by a european furniture company called cassina and i bought them from a thrift type store for very cheap.

38421189561_6a34574b2d_b.jpg

the lamp i made for this house. its an old jaguar camshaft, a wheel spacer and an ikea lamp shade. cost me around £30 to make (most of the expense was the shade)... the clock is a BMW alpina wheel from an old 7 series i owned that was destroyed so i cut the face off, painted it up, had it machined slightly and retrofitted a clock mechanism behind the centre cap.

and because people like seeing pets heres a couple of our dog Skye the white german shepherd. she has just turned 3!

alot of **** has adorned the garage over the past few weeks, most of which i didnt want to be there... some outside garden furniture and our old dining set... i broke down the dining set for selling and stored it out the way and put the outside furniture... well outside... its very wet here just now but thats where its meant to live i guess...

i have also moved my sofa into place and made a good deal of space in the middle ready for whatever may come next!

and also i put up a load of racking in the shed so i could stack loads of stuff inside! i really need to thin out my hoarding stash!

Thanks for the pic of the folding table!
Nice updates!
Thom

no problem! i'm actually thinking of making another on the same side of the garage but further along the wall towards the back. i have just picked up a pillar drill which will need to be mounted somewhere and it seems that it would be logical to make a new bench for it... however that means i will need to sell the orange sofa which i really dont want to do but if needs and space is a must....
