Garage takai - My Australian 2 car rental garage

Ive been lurking around here for a while now, but only got on board this year. Given that Facebook reminded me that i finished my old garage reno 6 years ago today, i figure i may as well start a thread for this current setup.

First though, a bit of context. I grew up doing a bit of everything, and then in my teens i got into motorsport and basically raced and tinkered with cars until my late 20s. 5 years ago now we moved from Adelaide to Melbourne, and so i had to leave my old garage behind.
This was the old garage that i had back in Adelaide:

202159_10150227458590944_3523934_o.jpg

Out the back was the dirty area, with the lathe, mill, drill press, welders etc; plus some storage stuff there too. Lathe and mill still live there.
This is what lived in that garage:
1000000863.jpg

Along the way i built a few other cars in there, a MX83 Cressida, MA61 Supra and a TA22. Build threads for those are scattered around the interwebs.

Anyway, when we moved to Melbourne i had part of the garage to work in, of an old Italian house:
IMG_1272.jpg

Then we moved to another place, and it was just a cramped long single garage

(Pics coming when i can find them)

In December last year we found another place in Melbourne and moved there. This place had a double 'carport' which was essentially a garage with an open end to the courtyard. This is what it was like when we first moved (had no time to pack properly, just shoved everything in when i got back from a work trip):
20170423-205625-iPhone.jpg

First thing on the agenda was to block in the wall. Now we are just renting so I opted for a temporary wall like is commonly used in office buildings.

Framed
20170423-210233-iPhone_002.jpg
Closed and painted
20170423-210233-iPhone.jpg

I also built some drop in decking pieces to make those areas of the courtyard more usable as can be seen in the foreground of the last photo.

Since then i have been organising the space, so i can get some proper work done.

First thing on the agenda was to build a simple workbench to store stuff on and under, a simple Rack It shelving frame with 32mm of MDF on top did that easily:
20170423-212033-iPhone.jpg

Then get all the bikes and shelving organised
20170423-205807-iPhone_001.jpg

Next thing was to build a new assembly table/workbench/table saw bench:
20170423-212329-iPhone.jpg

.... and then decide you cocked it all up and need to swap the saws around:

20170423-205802-iPhone_001.jpg

Then build a new welding cart, that stores the gas cylinders on the side, rather than behind, so that it is under 600mm deep. New cart is to the left of the TIG, with the MIG already on it. Needs finishing off, but thats mainly rivnuts and a drawer.

20170423-205802-iPhone_002.jpg

Oh and build a new cart for the brewery, cant go without beer.
20170423-212829-iPhone.jpg

Thats about where it is now. This is what it looks like from the front:
20170423-205807-iPhone.jpg

The race car is still unloved too, and a bit of a dumping ground.
20170423-205807-iPhone_002.jpg

Need to sort out a bunch of the crates, notably the two sitting on the ground infront of the bikes, and then some of the ones in the rack unit that were just filled with random **** when we moved. Getting there slowly though.

Bit scared about this woodworking stuff though, and all that pesky sawdust!

You've made use of that space nicely, can be hard with rental restrictions. Now get cracking on the race car! You race IPRA by the looks of the car?

Yeah, IPRA. U1600, which with the changes in regs and such its not really competitive in its current form. To get anywhere i really need to step up to U2L, or go and do what Browny has done an run Overs with a 3SGTE.

Welcome takai. Well you have moved a few times. You will get yourself organised soon. It sometimes takes time.

Oh yes, it always takes time. Good to be back in a bigger space though, but still pining for my old garage in Adelaide.... or something that size.

Great write up Takai, welcome from another Melbournian

Zone 1 Melbourne of course is the best consolation for not having a bigger garage...

Yeh, forgot to say, the garage in Adelaide looked awesome!

Fair enough, running a 4age at the moment I guess? Not worth boosting it? I've always looked at IPRA as where I will probably want to run when I decide to actually race door to door rather than just speed events.

Yeah, could go turbo 4A, but even then its smack bang in the middle of Overs and underpowered. If i want to stay with the A series engine, i could go a 7A block with a slight overbore and stroker rods for 1968ccc and 9:1CR for turboing. I think that would be my preferred option if i went turbo. But still, needs entirely new drivetrain (T50/T-series wont hold up). I have a cast bellhousing for a 4A or 7A to W58, but that still leaves the diff.

A Canadian down under ? Probably don't do much curling !

Haha, not much curling at all, and yes a Canadian down under. Still getting depressed by the Leafs...

Welcome takai, looks like you're really making the most of that space. What part of Melbourne have you settled in to?

Nice 86 you've got there, a friend of mine had one with a 20v in it, he now has a 4AGE turbo KE25. I also know Garth from HR through some online channels.

Yeah, cramped garages are my style. I think we met a while ago at a PF thing actually, but ive been around the traps for quite a while now.

Im in the inner west, zone 1 ring baby.

The saw table is really a good setup, means you can use a relatively cheap saw, and with some squaring up it will work pretty well. Plus it doubles as a nice big workspace when not in saw mode.

Currently has some speaker stands bases drying on it.

Haha, thanks 1/2 Cup.

Got a couple of hours in the shed this Anzac Day afternoon after looking after a sick little boy for most of the morning.

Started building the new brewery controller. Found this control box at the metal recyclers when i was dropping stuff off a few months ago, and so set about cutting holes in it:
20170425-204012-iPhone.JPG

Once all the holes were cut and fettled it was time to start the wiring:
20170425-204012-iPhone_001.JPG

Wiring is about 1/2 done there, needs the SSRs fitted and then some tidying up with little sticky ziptie pads.

Oh and this is what happens when you run cheap Chinese SSRs flat out with insufficient cooling for a years worth of brew days:

Ooops.

Went away for the weekend, so not much happened in the garage. But i did get a chance late last week to finish knocking up the paper towel and tape racks that sit above my main workbench.
20170502-215203-iPhone.JPG

Then today i finally assembled the new speaker stands for the study:
20170502-215202-iPhone.JPG

and then popped them in place:
20170502-215738-iPhone.JPG

Make quite a difference for the cost, especially with getting some separation and elevation from the rest of the setup. Total cost, under $20.

Yeah, it works really well. Means you have it always to hand. Cant remember where i saw it, but for something that can be made with scraps of wood lying around the shed, it is gold.

Also picked up this little guy on clearance from the green shed. All of $100.

Its not the best bandsaw in the world, but it will get the job done for smaller things that i regularly cut out.

Finished building the new control box for the brewery, and just had to give it a work out:
20170506-225424-iPhone.JPG

Works a treat. Just need two more cable grommets to add the pump control to the lit rocker switch on the front panel, and some labels for the switches.

Spent most of the afternoon sorting out some of the crates in the garage, getting there slowly.

I guess down under is about the farthest you can go to get away from them!:lol_hitti

Nice thread

Yeah, although they did fairly well this year.

Im also a cheesehead, which i usually blame on my sub-par geography skills as a 5yo, but has been quite cathartic over the years in the 'supporting losing sports teams' stakes.

Not much happening on my end of the world recently, primarily because of this:
20170621-153034-iPhone.JPG

Broke my big toe a couple of weeks ago, which has slowed me down noticeably.

Nevertheless, i did manage to get some shed time last weekend, and part of that was getting the bandsaw stand at least partly built:
20170621-152252-iPhone.JPG

Still needs a drawer built into it for saw blades etc, and a rebate milled in the top for positively locating the bandsaw but its pretty functional for now.

Started building myself a new dust collection system too, which called for cutting circles in wood. Built this with the 3d printer for one of my routers. Just uses 8mm threaded rod for adjustment, and a 608 bearing for location
20170621-152943-iPhone.JPG

Works very well.

Hope to get to build my table soon...

Spent half the day hobbling around the garage cleaning up and getting some stuff sorted out. More on that at the end of the weekend.

But importantly picked up this on Friday:
20170624-221717-iPhone_001.JPG

Decent quality welding table from the green shed.

Its on Promo for all the Aussies out there, see if you can find one locally if you want a half decent welding table. Cheap As

Well this weekend was relatively productive, mainly getting some stuff done around the garage, no real work on stuff yet.

First thing up was getting the race car into its proper position, and up on stands:
20170625-205613-iPhone.JPG

Thats a start anyway. Just need to get some stuff done with it though... oh and clear all of the stuff off it. It has become a bit of a defacto storage sturface as you can see.

Next up was to build a little dust collector for the thicknesser, and knocked up this Thien baffle quickly:

20170625-202910-iPhone_003.JPG

20170625-202910-iPhone_004.JPG

Which gives a nice 60L bin full of fluffy wood shavings:
20170625-202910-iPhone.JPG

To build it i knocked up a quick circle jig for the router, using the 3D printer:
20170625-210225-iPhone.JPG

Uses a 608 bearing and some M8 threaded rod. Simple as.

Finally on the shop organisation side i finished off the cabinet for the drill press i knocked together to calibrate the table saw.
20170625-202910-iPhone_002.JPG

Doors are reclaimed from a mates' bathroom reno (got all of the cabinetry, you can see one of the carcasses under the bandsaw) and one of the hinges is a bit busted, hence it sits proud slightly.

Inside are shelves:
20170625-202910-iPhone_001.JPG

With just a lip on them to hold the drill bits and other accessories

Works pretty well. Planning on making a little palletwood top for it later to store the vises, but havent got around to that yet.

Thats about it for a short few hours in the shop this weekend. Starting to feel like i have things at least vaguely organised so i can get some other work done in there soon.

Nice work, always feels good to make some progress on odd jobs like that. I like your router attachment, might have to get myself one of these 3d printers at some point...

Another year later, and i finally decided to sell the race car, it left the building last week. So i have spent the last few days cleaning up the garage and re-sorting stuff. Finally got it to this point:
20180410061337-f82fb717-la.jpg

Also shifted the vice over on the workbench, so then i can have area for the laptop and electronics stuff
20180410061219-06e973d8-la.jpg

A while ago i managed to get around to squeezing a 3mm piece of MDF in behind the workbench and screwed it to the cross rails. That allows me to glue thicker chunks of MDF to it in order to mount stuff to the backing, such as the chargers.

All clean again to work on a new project.
