I took them up on their "free image hosting" offer years ago. I posted a lot on here and on other forums with my pictures hosted by them. My welding table thread is a good example.

Then, all of a sudden, ****. All my pictures are gone. They want $399.00 a year for me to be able to use them or have access to them ever again.

I can't even take them back and leave. And my originals are long gone.

I'm so pissed off.

Moderator edit: In order to clean up the multiple stickies, I have merged both PB threads. This issue has been going on for several months so I believe it's time for a little clean up on the situation.

So please keep in mind while reading the thread, a few threads have been merged and the topic of a post may very from issue to solution to whatever dealing with PB.

Carry on ladies and gentlemen. Thanks.

Re: Photobucket Just Screwed Me Real Hard

I posted about photobucket this afternoon but now it's gone and I can't find my thread. they are nuts if they think anyone is going to pay $399 a year to host pictures. they really must want to close the site or something.

anyways. you can download all of your pictures in your album. I just did it. try loging out and then login again. I think there is a glitch in their site. I initially could not find my photos either but then after login out and then in again I could get to them to download.

Bastards got me too! Ruined a build thread I've been working on for over a year! It's extortion really, to disable hosted photo retroactively for a $300 money grab. I could see them saying "Hey, were going to start charging for photo hosting for anything uploaded after this date".... That makes sense and is a lot less scum baggish.

I'm a SmugMug user -- well over twenty thousand images hosted there. Uncompressed, easily shared, unlimited storage for less than fifty bucks a year.

I make sure and back all of my pictures up to a thumb drive and about once every six months I burn them to a DVD.

As far as free picture hosting I guess you get what you pay for ?

Re: Photobucket Just Screwed Me Real Hard

A lot of members here have been using PB. And the threads with all those pictures have been devastated. I think they should have a least left anything from the past alone and explained to their users that "from now on............"

I think this really ***** for all you guys that have lost everything. JMO

Re: Photobucket Just Screwed Me Real Hard

Just checked my pictures...All still there and accessible..no ransom demands. :dunno: OTOH I still keep copies of all my pictures on flash drives too, so if they were gone, no big deal.

Use to joke with a friend who told me he had transfered all his stuff to the "cloud". I told him it seemed inappropriate to trust all your info to something that floats across the sky and eventually disappears. :wtf:

Re: Photobucket Just Screwed Me Real Hard

Yeah, I just got the email this morning. I'm another one who's used photobucket for years, but I certainly won't pay for it. Making it retroactive was a ***** move. I just signed up for a flickr account based on a recommendation I got here. Time will tell how that works out.

I didn't have anything on PB that isn't already backed up on my computer but it still ***** having all the images I put into threads gone in a ****.

I can't see them getting enough paying subscribers to survive and advertisers will flee when they lose most of their traffic so it doesn't seem like a good business move to me.

Re: Photobucket Just Screwed Me Real Hard

Sorry, double post. I'm having some trouble with this site this morning for some reason it's running real slow. I thought it was me but an internet speed test says I'm at 120 Mbps.

Re: Photobucket Just Screwed Me Real Hard

I recommend keeping your photos on your local drive and using carbonite or the backup service of your choice as well as google photos, etc. For what its worth, PB has been crappy for a while now in terms of performance, however, all my photos are still accessible.

Re: Photobucket Just Screwed Me Real Hard

I just deleted and closed down my PB account.

I'd consider paying a small yearly fee, but the constant ads and such have made it barely usable.

Re: Photobucket Just Screwed Me Real Hard

I can still access my account and download all my pictures. Hopefully you guys haven't lost all your pictures. Then it would be up to you if you want to change to FLickr and update your threads. But that would be more for our benefit.

I think a lot of the "Let's see your..." threads in here are ruined.

I didn't even notice the annual $399.99 fee, because I clicked out as soon as I confirmed they wanted credit card info. $399.99 is ridiculous and no one has even stated the obvious about PB; their service *****. I used it mainly because I'd been using it for years, but their website is ridiculously slow and their apps frequently lock up or cannot connect to the server. Wanting a ridiculous price for your service is one thing. Wanting a ridiculous price for your ****** service is another.

Re: Photobucket Just Screwed Me Real Hard

Just checked mine, still have all my pics, haven't seen any $399 ransom e-mail.

Having said that, they turned off Ad-Blocker some how and now it's vurtually unusable since I'm always closing those annoyoing pop up ads.

Time to go to Imgur.com I guess. What a PIA.

I didn't get an e-mail either, because my account was linked to an old Hotmail account I had at the turn of the century. But if you look at any images you've posted here using PB as the hosting site, it tell you a url to go to in order to upgrade your account and that's where the $399.99 price appears.:eyecrazy:

Re: Photobucket Just Screwed Me Real Hard

For users who are affected by this, it is important to note that the images are not gone. They are still hosted on Photobucket, and you can actually load them right then and there by right-clicking on them and selecting "open image in new tab" or "open link in new tab" depending on the web browser that you are using. This opens the Photobucket website where the original image is displayed.

Just read this on another site and figured it may be helpful to some to try to get their important pictures back.

Imgur is a no go here at GJ -

Within our TOS, we do not allow the usage of imgur as a content delivery network on any site that has a section dedicated to selling. This is considered advertising. (much like eBay is blocked as well).

Re: Photobucket Just Screwed Me Real Hard

I was able to download my pictures (only a few I don't have on my phone already) but I don't know why they think anyone is going to pay $400 a year for image hosting instead of just switching to another provider. I don't know who else to use off the top of my head, but worst comes to worst hosting them on my personal server is always an option.

I used to only buy 4GB cards for my cameras. It forced me to offload them in DVD sized chunks. But that got too much of a pain in the rear.

At the moment, I offload the card to my computer, and then sync the data to another computer off-site (like a cloud backup, except I own the hardware on both ends). I plan to start backing up to BD-R DL instead of DVD. The BD-R DL media is 50GB and will way outlive DVD-R.

Free picture hosting is NOT free picture backup! So many people think they can backup their photos on a picture hosting site, and only later realize that the hosting site does not retain the full camera resolution images, but only lower quality compressed ones.

Re: Attention GJers-Check your Photobucket accounts

Since Photobucket has decided to break the Internet with their new policy, perhaps Ryan would allow editing of the old posts so that the post owners could re-point the images to another host? Or allow us to upload images to GJ if the admins want to carry the storage overhead?

I'm sure the overwhelming majority of people, starting with me, won't be paying $400 a year for "3rd party hosting" on Photobucket, especially after the way they implemented their new policy.

This new policy from them is a self-inflicted wound. I hope it's fatal.

FYI -
Don't bother switching to Imugr. It doesn't play well with GJ.

Flickr is free and works great with GJ. I've been using it for years.

I use PBase.com I've used them for many years. It costs $25 a year, but there is no B.S.

Here's a quick example of a picture I've posted here before:

I wonder if PB got hacked and taken over? Ur right, no sense in it. I been having trouble there for months.

Re: Photobucket Just Screwed Me Real Hard

The site has been so bogged down with ads lately it was hardly worth free. It would have been more civil of them to say something earlier "On this date, we will no longer allow 3rd party linking unless you pay..." To just flip a switch and say "Surprise!" was a d-bag move. They won't be around long.

Same with google photos....forums don't seem to like them.

I guess I get it....bandwidth costs money and they make money showing you all those ^%&%^$@*$#$((&@^%#*^($^(% AD's.

It is free, and you get what you pay for....so looks like we may have to start shelling out even more money to someone to host our photos so we can play on the forums.....wish google would work.

You're one step from where you should be, but nice work so far.
I've had my share of dynamic DNS services, and they all either flop, or go the same route as PhotoBucket over the years.

Go out and buy your own domain name, and then find yourself a non-free dynamic dns service.

I use namecheap.com for my registrar, and they include DDNS hosting for zones registered with them. That "included" DDNS is completely separate from the free DDNS they offer to the public.

I've been looking for an excuse to drop photobucket. With all the ads and popups, it's getting painful using it.

Hmm.......link doesn't work for me.

Anyway, now that Photobucket is worthless, and imgur is a no go, is there a preferred FREE photo hosting place for posting pics at garage journal?
