Tire rack in a metal garage?

My garage is only 21 wide and 19 long. I regret getting this and figuring that it would be ok for a 2 car garage.

Anyways, done with rant.

Making matters alot worse are the sets of summer/winter tires/rims that I have at the rear of the garage. I'd ordinarily get a rack that begins on the floor but my minivan is about 17 feet long and the garage has about 19 feet of internal length.

I saw some pictures about adding wood studs here but not sure how to go about everything....if it is even doable. I don't want my garage coming down on me.

I have, in the past, stored the tire/rim combos outside under tire covers. The wind and UV eventually destroyed the covers and made cleanup of the remains a chore. :)

Thanks!

I remember seeing a hanging tire rack made out of conduit and unistrut in a thread by member "aka Larry". You can check out his build here. Unfortunately Photobucket is terrible and all of his pictures are being held hostage.

Gets the tires off the floor so you can use the space underneath.
Install some wooden studs and use one of these.

Available at Amazon and other places.

Here's mine:

Thanks! I have 4 sets of tires and rims though...so I'd require 4 of those and space is limited.

While I debate my ability of *where* to install the studs I'd like to know *how* I install the studs.

Also, even after installing the studs won't I still be limited by the strength of the crappy metal garage?

Finally...

I wish that the photobucket thing didn't go down the way it did. If there is one thing that I am not great at (or just VERY SLOW at) is figuring things out on my own.

BTW - what is the PB fix? :wtf:

1. what is your 'metal garage' built out of? Besides metal. Like structurally. Is it like a car port? Or a red metal structure with beams, purlins, all that?

A picture of a wall would do wonders

didnt know there WAS a 'PB fix'..... ;)

Below is a link to what the PB (PhotoBucket) fix is.

Someone posted a link to Club Cobra which has a thread on a plug-in for Chrome that allows you to see the pictures hosted on PhotoBucket.

Imgur doesn't play nice.

Don't understand the allergy to uploading pics to each site....

As to your problem, you need to build something that is self supporting. Your 'garage' is designed to hold itself, that's it.

I agree. Think of it as a table with legs tall enough to park your car under, and far enough apart so that you don't hit them with your cars. 4 sets of tires will be no problem at all in a 2 car garage.

If you don't get the structure of a table, just look at one. If it's more than 6 feet long, there will be a beam under there.

You sir, are the man! I just checked back in to this thread to see if anyone else had posted and found some invaluable information.

Thanks everyone. So essentially some table like structure would need to go in there. If the "table" would be longer than 6 feet then I'd need something under the middle?

Also, how would I attach that structure's legs to the concrete or to the garage's frame at the bottom? Not sure which would be correct.

Thanks!

Currently on sale at HD. Place rails high enough to slide nose of the car(s) under. Could probably do 2 shelves of tires. You don't need to use all the rails...

Thanks. I decided to put the tires in my shed instead and restructure things.

I'd love this rack for the other side of my shed.

Thank you.

Can anyone share how studs are added to a metal garage? I'd like to store some other items up above the cars that aren't as heavy as tires.

Could someone elaborate please?

Thanks.
